I don't know how many on this page are old enough to remember the eighties, but it really does feel a lot like we are back there.

I remember doing "nuclear war" drills, where we largely did the same drill as earthquake drills, but were also instructed to keep our eyes firmly shut, etc.

I wonder how this will change the way in which our young people will look at geopolitics....

Just noticed this post.

In 1984 my intermediate teacher made our class watch The Day After. A movie every 10year old should see. /s

Russia is trying to claim the labs in Ukraine are being used for biological weapons, with US support. The US believes it is a false flag operation to try and justify Russia maybe using biological or chemical weapons themselves in future.

China is backing Russia on this.

Was also watching a retired general on news, if afraid to escalate on NATO side as don’t wish conflict to escalate what about the next country Russia attacks, do you say got to just keep it in that country as well? And as they control more territory bigger job to push them back.

The Bulwark's an American conservative, center-right (but anti-Trump) news site.

Yesterday they published a podcast interviewing Lt. General Mark Hertling (ret.), the former commanding general of U.S. Army Europe and the 7th Army.
His viewpoint - and what he thinks is the likely military outcome of the Ukraine invasion - was interesting.

It's my understanding from being an armchair general that tanks are actually quite vulnerable when used alone.

I believe US doctrine is to use infantry with tanks to flush out enemy sitting in hiding with their anti tank weapons. Of course, then the infantry need to be motivated and actually know what they're doing.

Most of the posters in this thread are just like chimpanzees on MDMA, full of feelings of bonhomie, joy, and optimism. Fred99 8/4/21

I'd be a bit cautious with comments from military and intelligence people because they tend to see things in exactly the way they were trained. I'm thinking in particular of a recent interview with the former head of MI6 where he gave a position that was pretty much what you'd expect from the (former) head of the UK's foreign intelligence service but that displayed the same level of... disconnectedness that had them completely miss the collapse of the Soviet Union until it had already happened.

I take everyone's views with a grain (or two) of salt (unless their views align with mine!).

A more difficult thing is to be able to discount their likely bias, and see if there's still good information there.
An even harder task is to be aware of our own 'motivated reasoning'. Essentially - paying much more attention to the things that we want to be true..
