War.

Giving Duterte the heads up on sub positions and praising his "control" of drug dealers, then the Saudis, NATO, the Pope, and now to his son-in-law being under investigation by the FBI.

He's circling the drain towards war in ever decreasing circles.

I don't think Trump is acting alone on his NATO comments, it's not sounding "off the cuff" to me, but prepared. (incidentally, he seems to have altered the way he talks - to try to sound like Ronald Reagan).

I have no doubt that the stance toward NATO is being driven by Steve Bannon who's convinced Trump that it is about money, when for Bannon - it isn't about money at all, but about destabilising Europe as part of the apocalyptic world views he holds. Bannon sees war as inevitable - and worse - he wants war.

I expect he will back down on Climate Change. He either makes a law that fails, or he backs down. Its a legacy if doing nothing since Jan 20.

But, he may be doing the world a favour. There are now ample reasons to distance themselves from the US. And that he is doing nothing except to alienate the US, the effects of him are a lot lower than many expected. Plus, he will be gone next election, maybe sooner.

I love his stance on trade deficits. Its his people buying the goods that cause a deficit. If he wants Buy American, get them to make American then buy it. But they wont as that will cost them part of their take home income, the trade issue is caused by his country and and his people, not anyone else.

The upshot is that he was a grave risk to the world, but its more a show of incompetence and nothing. IMHO we dodged a bullet, and the show will continue then be gone.

I guess if you exclude personal factors (Trump's rudeness to Merkel) and other issues like the environment, then Trump's threat to Germany is destabilisation of Europe - Germany has more to lose if Europe falls apart under a nationalist agenda than from US threats and posturing over trade imbalance. Probably also reading the mood, the alt:right of course getting plenty of media and strong support in France, Holland - despite Trump and the alt:right, nationalist candidates were soundly thumped, there's a level of support of course, but at lower levels than in the inward-looking US - yet where Trumpism is still a minority view.

The world is distancing itself from the US. Not sure the Republican party will like this at all.

The republican party is split about the US role in the world.

The old-time conservatives are isolationists, to the point where they believe all US bases outside the US should be shut down, and the Navy should be restricted to US waters.

The newer republicans are pro-international corporations.

Even US corporations are split.

If you're multinational consumer product producer, you want stability at any cost, even if it means dictators run most countries.

If you're an arms manufacturer, you love enough instability to keep police forces and countries buying arms, but not so much that the money stops flowing.
