i don't know what Trump's done in Saudi but now Saudi has cut off Qatar and I suspect the result of this is more instability regionally, and eventually globally

Maybe, not sure. There are 6 countries, and they are sending back Qatar people and banning their own going to Qatar. If Trump isn't involved, he will probably jump/tweet onto that, "see, see"

Sounds potentially very messy - the USA's largest military base in the Middle East is in Qatar.
Al Jazeera is based in Doha. Saudi has closed Al Jazeera's local office.

Various reasons seem to be given for the ban. One is reported comments made by the Emir - that Iran is an Islamic power and critical of the US. Those reports may have been "fake news" due to alleged hacking of media sites. They're also claiming that Qatar supports ISIL, muslim brotherhood, IOW - all the bad guys.

One tweet from Trump could sort this all out (for the worse) - so I hope he doesn't believe he's got the answer.

Saudi suddenly changed its policy after a Trump visit and $100bn arms deal. Maybe it's coincidental, but in my mind it's connectable.

Has to be. While these issues with Qatar aren't new, and stuff like this in a smaller way has happened before, it has to be related. The tweet we are waiting for, will confirm that, as it will as usual lack tact and diplomacy

Some choice quotes today from the Washington Post:

‘Today’s G.O.P. doesn’t do substance; it doesn’t assemble evidence, or do analysis to formulate or even to justify its policy positions. Facts and hard thinking aren’t wanted, and anyone who tries to bring such things into the discussion is the enemy … Can you think of any major policy area where the G.O.P. hasn’t gone post-truth?’

‘It’s not “America First.” It’s “Trump First.” Before the rest of the planet.’

Geographically, Qatar is dependent on Saudi being the physical connection to the rest of the world. So Qatar might as well be an island from now on.

In the past when big brother bullies someone not their own size, domestic issues are kept domestic. But nowadays, with the geopolitics being globalised ... who knows what will happen. For all you know mummy might defuse the argument and give everybody a lolly. I wonder where is mummy

Could be - part of US (and Israel) long-standing hatred of Iran.

By attacking the Mayor, isnt he really attacking the citizens of London?

Surely they should cancel is state visit. I know if he came here I would go way outta my way to salute him in the only way he understands.

forget UK elections - Trump's support for Saudi to fight IS and his putting all blame on Iran is going to improve the strength of IS ... ! (my opinion of course)

Indeed he has, and coincidentally number one threat (ISIS) has launched attacks in Tehran.

Trump is playing a very dangerous game there. The kind of "extremism" that most bothers his new friends in the ME isn't ISIS.

It's very odd. Suddenly the whole focus of ISIS (and Qatar and Saudi Arabia) appears to have changed to be about Sunni vs Shia rather than Muslim vs Western. Except that the latest London attack was only a few days ago.

I wonder if the the latest "news" is just spin, perhaps to reassure the British public ahead of the election that this isn't as big a problem as they thought?
