More more bland announcement than of Adidas sanctions, meaning sad Russian hipsters wanting tracksuits.

But TSMC announcement is very bad news for Russians. For everyone lese it means less of a shortage of chips.

Why Russia Can’t Replace "Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company", TSMC

Asianometry

In late February 2022, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company or TSMC announced that it would halt shipments to Russia per a new round of sanctions.

This could actually be the most significant sanction that's ever been applied to Russia, depriving gopniks of their Adidas tracksuits would be like depriving Aussies of cold beer or Brits of wam beer. I foresee the downfall of Putin within days, brought about by an army of Adidas-clad delinquents.

How to explain gopniks... think Westies but in a very Russian manner. If you can stand Russian hardbass, this video is an illustration.

kingdragonfly: Vanity Fair: US Republican representative Madison Cawthorn, who’d make a good russian mark, tells supporters ukraine’s zelenskyy is a “thug”.

At an event on Saturday in North Carolina, the 26-year-old lawmaker told supporters: “Remember that Zelenskyy is a thug. Remember that the Ukrainian government is incredibly corrupt, and it is incredibly evil, and it has been pushing woke ideologies.”

...As for the notion that Ukraine has been pushing “woke ideologies,” we truly have no idea…what the hell Cawthorn is talking about. Presumably, this accusation was derived from some combination of (1) Republicans thinking calling someone “woke” is just about the worst thing you can say about them, (2) Putin apologists claiming that the Russian president is an ally in the fight against the “woke left,” and (3) Cawthorn being a idiot....

Ah, "woke". The new name-calling word Republicans adopted. The old "pinko".

Some ridiculous comments on my local Facebook page, people blaming our PM for price rises of petrol - like she personally started the war to jack up the price of petrol. Um, okay.

It's just complaining about the state of the world in general, which makes the government the obvious lightning rod. Someone recently forwarded some poll result or other that showed National slightly ahead and I pointed out that it isn't a sudden swing to National, it's just people using the government as a lightning rod for dissatisfaction. You could run a box of one dozen starving, crazed weasels against the government and people would protest-vote for them. (Eventually a little ditty would start going through their head, it goes a little something like "Doh!, Get 'em off me!, Get 'em off me!, No, get 'em off, get 'em off!", but that doesn't come till later).

Yes, its termed whinging

That made me chuckle. Not ideal in this thread which Im passionate about.

Re the downfall of Putin. Dont get me started. Today, he was interviewed by someone, he said that the sanctions will help Russia be stronger, be more into technology, and so on. Grow and develop. Well, if thats the case you will be the number one leader and country very soon.....Sanction heaven. I won't mention a previous obssessed leader who led his country to ruin in case I get banned again. That particular country has moved on, and is a key country these days. Why? because of democracy and fairness, not now governed by an emotional, dysfunctional autocracy and dictator.

Ill freely admit I wonder why the "normal world" doesn't go hard against Putin. In some ways its already WW3, but a passive WW3. There is military war, but the economic war is probably far more significanr, and I say that with a heavy heart based on what innocent Ukrainians are dealing with.  This isnt just another conflict, its a turning point. Cold War 2.0 or not. Add China to the recipe. Its a turning point.

A longer, utterly mesmerizing deep-dive from a Russian-born US journalist into the motivations of Vladimir Putin, and what's going on inside his head.

"Everything Putin has showed us at every step of the last 22 years is that every time we think he won't go that far, he does. We think he won't come back for a third term; he did. He won't annex Crimea; he did. He won't invade Ukraine; he did. He won't try to kill Navalny; he did. He won't try to subvert an American election; he did. And so why would we believe that this time he won't do what he says he'll do? …
I mean it's unthinkable. Like, what he has opened up with this invasion is unthinkable.
And because he is losing and because the sanctions and the Ukrainians are humiliating him, because he is backed into a corner, he is the most dangerous he has ever been, because it is now existential for him. And if you think he doesn't know that everybody in the world understands that the only way to end this is to put a bullet between his eyes, he knows. And that makes him also much more dangerous."

Speaking of gopniki, I had a look at the Life of Boris YT channel, he does humourous looks at Russian/Slav culture from, probably, somewhere in the vicinity of St.Petersburg. The view of his playlist says it all.

Yeh, its hard to say what you could give him that would be a 'Golden Bridge' to go back across.

His cabinet chosen as loyalists, also because they can get the dirty work done.
Some are dangerous tough bastards, a bit like mafia lieutenants.

They have done very dirty work for Putin as it gave them free reign for their grift.
They are probably not the sort to die for him, so Nukes and kiss their lives goodbye ?

Too many good things in life they have acquired and to enjoy.
Maybe they are tough and dangerous enough to find him a retirement plan.

Of course one of them in charge its not a huge change, but maybe enough change.

Place your bets... TAB should open a book.

In all seriousness, I think Boris has advanced awareness of the richness of Slav culture more than many, many others - because of his videos, a few years ago, lots of the kids in my kids' high school were practicing their squatting and saying 'oy blin!', 'cyka blyat', and 'cheeki breeki' at each other. I started making kvass as a direct result of exposure to his videos. It was because of Boris that I understood what was meant when the Ukrainians said 'Иди на хуй' (idi nahui) to that Russian warship.

That's why it had such an impact, he's spent years spreading Slav culture in a humourous way to > 500M viewers, and then that final depressing video...

Washington (CNN)With Russia's war in Ukraine now in its third week, US and European officials have little optimism that the diplomatic channels can deliver a way out of the conflict at this point.

Diplomatic channels are a joke. He doesnt care if women and children die, nor if every town is levelled.

And now mercenaries; only useless 3rd world armies employ mercenaries to bolster failing operations.
