quickymart:

I read that a number of Democrats were going to support him initially, but then changed their minds due to the way he handed the January 6 riot, as well as opening a pointless impeachment inquiry against Biden.

Can't say I blame them, while you could argue My Kevin better than some people in the American political system, he's hardly done a good job in the role.

I also read (I think on CNN) that he may try for the speakership again - but would he win again after it took 15 tries last time?

Maybe he was asking for a 'free ride' on that vote, you back me but you get nothing.
If there was an offer to table a bill or two that clearly have majority to pass in return response it may have gone very differently?
Averting stalemate on just basic funding for Government.

Oh he won't run again? I imagine he's probably worn out from all the drama.

So what does he do now? Leave politics altogether, or go back to his previous role before he was speaker?

There is a distinct possibility Republicans may resolve to expel Gaetz from the House:

https://people.com/house-republicans-consider-matt-gaetz-expulsion-vote-8304045

I can't see that happening but.. former Republican speaker Gingrich says expel:

Sticks around as long as he can and eventually collects his pension I imagine.

What was his previous role anyway? Akin to being an MP?

Ted Cruz: "wow, my popularity rating has gone up since the new crowd has joined."

The Advocate: Matt Gaetz Succeeds Ted Cruz as the Most Hated Man in Congress

Florida U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz is the most hated man in Congress right now.

He's ousted the speaker against the wishes of the vast majority of his party in the House. They are steamed, to put it mildly. During the debate on the House floor, Gaetz looked like a hyper sadist. The detestation toward him was immensely powerful and palpable. And through his histrionics, he's also supplanted the formerly most hated man in Congress.

That would be Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

For all intents and purposes, he's still the most hated man in the Senate. His reign over both chambers ended today, after nearly a decade. The hate has stretched as far back as 2015, when Foreign Policy ran a story about him, obviously titled “The Most Hated Man in the Senate.” And a New York Magazine article, also in 2015, ran with the title, “Why Everyone (In Congress) Hates Ted Cruz.” There are others — far too many to list here.

Appearing on MSNBC’s Deadline White House last year, respected and mild-mannered former Republican consultant Matt Dowd said, "To know Ted Cruz is to dislike Ted Cruz...Every time I think he can't go lower he goes lower...Cruz represents the Republican Party as good as anybody...he's willing to say or do anything including lying and deceiving.”

I have a friend who has been a top lobbyist on Capitol Hill for over 20 years, I reached out to him and promised him anonymity if he would be frank with me about Ted Cruz and Matt Gaetz.

“He’s just a jerk if you really want me to be honest,” he said about Cruz. “No one likes him, even the other senators, and even ones from the Republican Party. They just can’t stand him.”

From Wikipedia: "The Ohio State University abuse scandal centered on allegations of sexual abuse that occurred between 1978 and 1998, while Richard Strauss was employed as a physician by the Ohio State University (OSU) in the Athletics Department and in the Student Health Center. An independent investigation into the allegations was announced in April 2018 and conducted by the law firm Perkins Coie.

In July 2018, several former wrestlers accused former head coach Russ Hellickson and U.S. representative Jim Jordan, who was an assistant coach at OSU between 1987 and 1994, of knowing about Strauss' alleged abuse but failing to take action to stop it. Jordan has denied that he had any student-athlete report sexual abuse to him.

The report, released in May 2019, concluded that Strauss abused at least 177 male student-patients and that OSU was aware of the abuse as early as 1979, but the abuse was not widely known outside of Athletics or Student Health until 1996, when he was suspended from his duties. "

New York Times: Giuliani’s drinking, long a fraught subject, has trump prosecutors’ attention

For more than a decade, friends conceded grimly, Mr. Giuliani’s drinking had been a problem. And as he surged back to prominence during the presidency of Donald J. Trump, it was getting more difficult to hide it.

On some nights when Mr. Giuliani was overserved, an associate discreetly signaled the rest of the club, tipping back his empty hand in a drinking motion, out of the former mayor’s line of sight, in case others preferred to keep their distance. Some allies, watching Mr. Giuliani down Scotch before leaving for Fox News interviews, would slip away to find a television, clenching through his rickety defenses of Mr. Trump.

Even at less rollicking venues — a book party, a Sept. 11 anniversary dinner, an intimate gathering at Mr. Giuliani’s own apartment — his consistent, conspicuous intoxication often startled his company.

“It’s no secret, nor do I do him any favors if I don’t mention that problem, because he has it,” said Andrew Stein, a former New York City Council president who has known Mr. Giuliani for decades. “It’s actually one of the saddest things I can think about in politics.”
...
To almost anyone in proximity, friends say, Mr. Giuliani’s drinking has been the pulsing drumbeat punctuating his descent

CNN: "MyPillow" Mike Lindell’s lawyers in election defamation cases seek to quit over millions of dollars in unpaid legal fees

Attorneys representing conspiracy theorist Mike Lindell and his company MyPillow in a defamation lawsuits brought by Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic have asked to withdraw from both cases after Lindell allegedly racked up millions in unpaid legal fees.

In a court filings, Minnesota-based Parker Daniels Kibort said both Lindell and MyPillow have not paid the firm for its work on the case and won’t be able to pay future fees and costs.

“On October 2, 2023, [the law firm] was informed by Defendants that they are not able to get caught up with or make any payment on the large amount they owe in arrears nor pay for anywhere near the estimated expense of continuing to defend against the lawsuits going forward, including either the legal fees or litigation costs,” the filing stated.

In an interview with CNN on Thursday, Lindell acknowledged he has not paid the attorneys for the last two or three months, adding that he did not know who would next represent him in the case.
