There's no limit to how dumb some people are. Some might give it a rest (like the mentioned white supremacist movement in Wellington) but will come back no doubt. Some might just use some other sites. Some will just keep doing what they do.

What is needed is to shine a light on them when this is seen.

https://www.straitstimes.com/world/middle-east/man-sacked-deported-from-uae-for-celebrating-nz-mosque-shooting

Basically Singapore reporting on a UAE employee being deported for 'celebrating' the mosque killings via his Facebook account.

I hope many companies would make it known to their employees they have a zero-tolerance policy for inappropriate use of social media. Others have been fired for much less.

It's in the UAE media as well.

https://gulfnews.com/uae/crime/man-sacked-and-deported-from-uae-for-social-media-comments-on-new-zealand-attacks-1.62786474

The UAE isn't a democracy and the rules are a bit different here. Around 85% of the population are expats and your visa is tied to your job. If you get fired and it is decided that you are not welcome you are removed. To be honest you are better to be deported than imprisoned.

I have no idea if all this publicity about white supremacy will drive the communication of such groups underground?

I think if I was a member of such a group and thought the way ********* does, I'd be keeping my thoughts and plans away from the mainstream media and social media.

Possibly, but I feel that nastiness is their mantra, not just isolated incidents, they seem to want to prod normal people continually. I do feel this event is a watershed moment. All disasters have the grieving and media coverage, this event has gone a lot further. There is steady coverage of fringe elements, related arrests of people that are no flight risk are thrown in the slammer for a month till the next court appearance. International coverage is still high. And when I watched the news last night, 1 and 3, the coverage of so much support also included a look at the vicious underbelly that exists here, from people who described how they have been treated here. the undercurrent of fighting racism and white deviants is far more than what you would normally see, its like the straw has broken the camels back.

Should we remove his name so it doesn't appear on search engine results? Just wondering....

Yeah he's right? Unfortunately we can't force the FBI to get helicopters to raid his premises.

He's actually not right though. New Zealand and the United States have a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (UST 17-1212), Title 28 USC1782 also allows United States District Courts to order a person to produce evidence even without an MLAT to a foreign court or tribunal even before proceedings have been laid, and New Zealand Police are authorised under the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Act 1992 to request assistance from foreign governments in obtaining evidence. If he, as he has done, then proceeds to destroy evidence and encourage targets of discovery to tamper with evidence, he's committed a crime under US law as the evidence production order would come from a US District Court judge. The fool probably should have talked to a (competent) lawyer before shooting his mouth off.

Well in that case I sure hope that this route is followed to get that scumbag.

I often feel that the internet does more harm than good and I really find it very hard to find the good. I have today closed my Twitter account and next will be my Facebook account. Google plus will die next month. I had previously never heard of Kiwi Farms and I am glad of that but unfortunately I cannot unlearn about it.

I've joined you in deciding to close my FB account; I've posted the reasons for doing so, and will close it in the weekend.

I've always been aware that having an account was making a pact with the devil; the final straw that pushed me to make the decision was listening to an interview with Roger McNamee on a PBS podcast; he was an early investor in FB and mentor to Zuckerberg, but has major qualms with the company in its current form.

Here's what he said happened after a livestreaming of a murder on FB Live:

Afterwards, one of the senior Facebook executives wrote up an all-hands memo in which he said: 'This kind of stuff is going to happen; it is' - and I'm paraphrasing here - 'it is a cost of achieving our growth objectives''.

A decision I imagine they (privately) still stand by, despite last Friday's massacre and their role in it.

Nothing of substance will change with FB unless it's forced upon it by regulation; in the meantime, I'd rather not have anything to do with the company.

People and the media are condemning the social media aspect of spreading it but the main stream media is just as bad in my books. This event is being covered in every conceivable way, the news takes up around 80% of it followed by an in other news couple of stories in the last 10 minutes.

The main stream media is fueling it just as much and is exactly what this guy wanted, I cannot even begin to imagine how any of the victims and family must be feeling reliving it every night on the news and through out the day.

I am not saying don't report on it but dial it down on the constant main stream media attention on it.

Seriously, you think the MSM is as bad as Facebook for its complicity in providing a relatively unchecked ability to livestream any event including suicides and murders, and not taking it down quickly enough? 8chan etc for providing a forum for these munters to congregate and one-up each other with such vile filth that, if repeated in the MSM or in public. could (and should) quite well have you arrested and jailed?

It's not that I believe a critical blowtorch shouldn't be shoved down the collective grundies of MSM if deserved - and I'm thinking in particular dodgy stuff said on talkback and by commentators of a similar ilk - but in my view in no way is the level of complicity comparable.

With rights come responsibilities. If there is a right to free speech, there is a corresponding responsibility to not pervert that right. Speech that is free is not the same as speech used as a weapon. Free speech is not freedom to harm others. It is not freedom to be abusive, or demeaning, or hateful. It is not freedom to communicate that which is harmful for the sake of an advertising dollar. Speech is not neutral and those who convey it cannot claim to be either. It is time that all who benefit from free speech accept the responsibility that goes with it.

I am thinking hard about my Facebook account. My disability means there are days and weeks that I cannot get out or cannot travel far because of pain and the need to store my medication in a refrigerator. Facebook has allowed me to stay in touch with many people that I would not be able to. Dropping Facebook and other social media including Geekzone will increase my isolation and risk a trip back down depression. However all this is insignificant compared to the pain caused by the event in Christchurch and the pain multiplied by those who chose social media to expand that pain.

Keep it. I don't use it apart from my brother in Australia, and distant cousins.

You use it for the purpose it was designed for, thats good. The law or pressure will go somewhere to reigning it in, so that also goes back to its original purpose.

I second this. Don't deprive yourself of something important to your quality of life because of guilt at what happened. Maybe there are ways to reduce your exposure to Facebook ads so their income is affected. Maybe you can change some user settings to screen out everything not important to you. As a continuing Facebook member, you can also clearly let the executives know how you feel, and what you expect them to do to keep you as a member. Keep reminding them that you are watching.

I deactivated my Twitter account this morning. I've been thinking of doing this for a while as I never really use Twitter, and this event has finally made me act.

I'd like to close my Facebook account but I use it to communicate with a few friends and a hobby group. I only visit it maybe twice a week and lately I've pretty much stopped posting stuff on it.

I don't have accounts on Instagram, etc.

Everyone who closes a social media account or even just thinks about it, let the company involved know what you are doing, and why. That will add to the pressure to make them actually do something, and not just talk about it.
