The NY Times - Scalise Withdraws as Speaker Candidate, Leaving G.O.P. in Chaos

breaking  (pun intended)

Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana withdrew on Thursday from consideration for the speakership he was on the cusp of claiming after hard-line Republicans balked at rallying around their party’s chosen candidate, leaving the House leaderless and the G.O.P. in chaos.

After being narrowly nominated for speaker during a Tuesday closed-door secret-ballot contest among House Republicans, Mr. Scalise, their No. 2 leader, found himself far from the 217 votes needed to be elected on the House floor. ...

With no clear end in sight to the G.O.P. infighting that has left one chamber of Congress paralyzed at a time of challenges at home and abroad, Mr. Scalise said he would step aside in hopes that someone else could unite the fractious party.

His abrupt exit left Republicans back at Square One, as fractured as ever over who should lead them and trading recriminations about the disarray in which they found themselves.

Oh great, so now that f-wit Jordan can try to become speaker again 🙄

Blows my mind that Trump has screwed up the Republican party so much that they're like this. And what does he have to show for his, uh, "efforts" now? A very divided party that can't organise itself to even elect one of their own as speaker (after all, it's not like those guys would vote for the Democratic bloke), plus 90-odd indictments and a number of fraud charges.

I bet his mother would be proud 🙄

Is there no mechanism by which a minority candidate could be selected? A Democrat nominee would probably only miss a majority of votes by a handful. Why, in challenging times like this, can the system not cope with such an exception? The majority party does not even seem to have an actual majority, except in name only. If democracies can end up with minority governments, why can't America have a minority House of Representatives? Anything seems better than the current food fight. Just let the Democrats run the show for awhile. At least they have that capability.

Rikkitic:  Is there no mechanism by which a minority candidate could be selected? ...

This fiasco was deliberately created by far-right anarchists (encouraged by Trump).

Apart from their own short moment of "glory", what's in it for them?

The House has never been without a Speaker before, so there is no precedent to fall back on.

This shambolic situation may continue for weeks or even months.

Hopefully nobody will attack the USA before this is sorted.

The NY Times - Divided G.O.P. Nominates Jordan for Speaker, Elevating a Hard-Right Figure

breaking

House Republicans on Friday nominated Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio, the hard-right Republican and chairman of the Judiciary Committee, to be their next speaker, after he turned back a challenge from a mainstream conservative.

By a vote of 124 to 81, Mr. Jordan defeated Representative Austin Scott of Georgia, an ally of the ousted former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who had decided just hours earlier to seek the nomination. Mr. Scott had effectively put himself forward as a protest candidate against Mr. Jordan.

But while Mr. Jordan won the contest, his quest for the speakership still faced serious challenges after several mainstream Republicans said they would not support him. ...

Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska said lawmakers were worried about caving to the whims of the hard-right members who had refused to back Mr. Scalise.

The fact is: If you reward bad behavior, you’re going to get more of it,” Mr. Bacon said.

Jordan is the rabble-rousing co-founder of the ultraconservative / fascist House Freedom Caucus and a favorite of Trump. He is Bad News. 🙄

I would not go so far (yet) as to predict an imminent Chinese invasion of Taiwan, but if they are actually going to do it, this is probably a pretty good time for them.

Justice Thomas urges court to reconsider media defamation standard

10 Oct 2023

WASHINGTON (CN) - On Tuesday, Justice Clarence Thomas used the court's refusal to review a former coal baron's claims that lies in the media resulted in his failed Senate campaign to rail against decades of First Amendment precedent protecting the press.  ...

"I continue to adhere to my view that we should reconsider the actual-malice standard," the Bush appointee wrote.

For almost 60 years, a landmark ruling [New York Times v. Sullivan] has protected the press from defamation suits in favor of fostering debate about government and public affairs. ...

The conservative justice has been a long-time critic of New York Times.

Coal baron Don Blankenship killed 29 people and only served a year in prison, and paid a tiny fine. Technically, not a felon apparently you have to serve a year + one day. He thinks if newspapers had not called him a felon he would have won his election? I doubt it.

The Washington Post - The 5-Minute Fix  (17 Oct 23)

House Republicans could vote as soon as Tuesday on whether to elect probably the most controversial speaker of the House yet: Jim Jordan of Ohio.

Here’s why Jordan is so controversial:

  •     Since he arrived in Congress in 2006, he has played a major role in holding out votes for spending bills, leading to government shutdowns.

  •     He was all in on election denialism: After Trump lost in 2020, Jordan was involved in nearly all aspects of efforts to keep Trump in power ...

  •     He’s not well liked by most members of his party. ...

To sum up where we are:

It’s been nearly two weeks without a House speaker. Republicans have kicked out their No 1. (Kevin McCarthy) and tried to elect their No. 2 (Steve Scalise). Now they are trying to elect someone from the far right.

And what happens next:

If Jordan fails, there is no next plan. ...

EDIT

And here lies a dilemma for the GOP: With each failed vote for an aspiring speaker, a sense of internal disorder and discord undercuts the GOP election-year pitch to voters that they should be trusted with governing.

If Jordon fails responsible Republicans join with Democrats and elect either a moderate Republican or even Hakeem Jeffries as Speaker, at which point the heads of Jordon and Matt Gaetz implode and the Improbability Drive kicks in and transports the entire Congress to the Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

Sideface:Here’s why Jordan is so controversial:

His previous job skills were either being a collegiate wrestler, or as a wrestling coach.

And of course, being Republican is involved in a sexual abuse scandal

National Review: Jim Jordan Accused of Playing ‘Word Games’ on the Ohio State Wrestling Sexual-Abuse Scandal

One big question hanging over Jordan’s candidacy involves allegations from multiple former Ohio State wrestlers who say that Jordan, while a coach at the university, failed to protect them from a sexually abusive team doctor named Richard Strauss.

“Four of the former Ohio State University wrestlers who have accused Representative Jim Jordan of failing to protect them from a sexual predator when he was the team’s assistant coach in the 1980s and ’90s said [on October 10] he has no business being the next speaker of the House,” NBC News reported.

The Ohio State scandal involved Strauss’s frequent fondling of male athletes’ genitals under the guise of medically unnecessary examinations for hernias.

Former OSU wrestler Mike Schyck, who is involved in an ongoing lawsuit against Ohio State, said that then–assistant coach Jim Jordan’s “locker was just a few spots away from mine and mine was near Dr. Strauss. . . . And we were always talking about Dr. Strauss. There’s no way he didn’t know what was going on.”
