gzt: When you look at how nutty the alternative slate of electors aka false electors scheme was and they almost got away with it - praise be to Mike Pense for not validating that - it is not hard to imagine similar crazed shenanigans for constitutional amendments. It's not out of the question at all.

Yes, people are quick to judge or critique him purely by association, but the man had ethics when it really mattered and again in not endorsing DT this time.

re VP, whilst the actual job isnt always full on when in office, right now is the time a good VP can make or break you. Given DT gets away with anything, literally, Vance his doing his best to lose him votes. I think people, especially the opposing VP, make it clear if you vote DT, at 78yo, there is a high chance you are voting for Vance, more over knowing the Repubs have proven they are going to try and take away your Freedom and right to Vote.

Just on the Dem VPs, some are now saying its between Kelly and Shapiro. Making a play for Arizona is tempting, but if you take Kelly, you remove one Dem senator. along with Pennsylvania being a 19 count state, and one you have to win, I think Shapiro for me is the obvious choice, being quick of wit and can be sharp with the tongue, which is what Harris needs.

But dang, there are at least ten good candidates for the democrats, Trumpet could only come up with Vance who is the least favorable in modern history from what I can work out.

Harris within a week has raised $200M, 2/3 of which is from NEW donors. That is incredible. along with an additional 170000 volunteers.

El gore endorsed Harris with glowing compliments about taking on big oil companies and winning etc and Chuck Schumer on "Face the Nation" said Trumps choice of running mate was "incredibly bad" and he goes on to say Trump has 10 more days to decide to dump Vance before the Ohio Ballot is locked in, siting what else might come out of the Vance closet.

My pick for VP is still Kelly.

Shapiro looks a little too slick to me and AFAIK has only ever worked in politics so could be considered part of the 'swamp'.

Kelly seems a lot more rough and ready so could appeal to blue collar workers more. And his wife survived a much more serious assassination attempt.

Its a tough one, Kelly is not a great speaker, but will appeal to straight white dudes and more so straight old white dudes, which is the one bunch she is missing. But if you going to lose the house you do not want to lose the senate too, so I don't think they will risk it as much as I like Kelly.

But I think Shapiro still picks you up plenty of those votes, yes he looks suit n tie well groomed, but hes well known for being from a swing state Plus they have to win Penn. Plus he will make JD Vance look like an uneducated Hill Billy, not the guy who wrote a book about condescending authority about those Hill billys from the burbs in Ohio with extreme snobbery (which people are figuring out now, hes a fraud, like his daddy Mr Trump).

Ive been listening Brian Cohen and Bulwark last few days, many comments are saying if they do debate, instead of hiding from the border, Harris should straight out ask why Trump shut down a Bi-Partisan border bill that the border control board had fully endorsed, just so you could use it for Political gain? That way She controls the narrative. Then just prosecute him for the of it imo, oh and laugh genuinely at him.

aisde from the border, she needs to not defend the democrat economic macros as its largely the people right on the bottom feeling it, but come up with some kind of temporary solution until inflation is a little better and for a seprate fuel tax cut (or ask Joe to release some more reserves and turn it to petrol/diesel, rather than sell then buy like hes been so savvy at, Trump hates that Biden makes Trump look dumb with economics and business lol)

So border, macros not finding micro financials just yet, Gas prices. Border is the big one though. If they get those wrapped up and she stays centrist, I hate to call it early so I wont, instead, Trump peaked waaay too early, got barely a polls bump from the shooting and the RNC, now be picks a guy who just cant help but sound bad.

I honestly with two very divisive candidates, Trump and Kamala, I think the vice president will have almost no effect.

Once either take power, they will both be almost unknown to the American people.

If Trump didn't try to overthrow US democracy, vice president Pence would be unknown to most Americans in 2020.

I remember a Jimmy Kimmel interview which he showed a picture asked "who is this women?". When she was a celebrity or any porn star, the men were successful 100%.

Otherwise they almost always failed for any other women.

Republicans, name a country

CNN published today a useful guideline as to what (normally) comes next with the election: https://edition.cnn.com/politics/election-2024-key-dates-dg/index.html

I understand Kamala will be picking her VP before the Democrats hold their convention next month.

Vance said a couple of days ago "we are in a late republican period"

the late republican period in history refers to the period where the Roman republic was in a state of political anarchy leading to Julius Caesar's assassination and an installation of an emperor and Rome became an empire

also Trump said "in 4 years you won't have to vote anymore, we're fixing it so you won't have to vote anymore"

they know something we don't ....

Vance got quite catty toward Harris in his last rally, simply because she questioned his loyalty to country, I think due to ethics that follow the money and fame.

He even pulled out the "run a business" finished by "marine for my country in iraq" (or words very close to). He didnt mention where he got the money for the businesses plural of course and that he was a "Communications Officer" for the marines.

Then questioned, "what has she done?" (again words close to, watched it on video few hours back).

Toss pot he be imo.

Remember James is basically a form of Trump-lite, so I wouldn't expect much from him, especially when you have the orange buffoon spouting such profound lines describing Harris as "dumb as a rock", "crazy" and "unhinged" 🙄

Better than Trump avoiding the Vietnam draft because of unbalanced humours, too much miasma, the vapours, and neurasthenia which miraculously disappeared the same day as Vietnam draft disappearing.

Vance also said that Harris got all her money from "government checks", a racist dog whistle intended to lump her in with minorities getting welfare checks.

New York Times: Did a New York Podiatrist Help Donald Trump Avoid Vietnam?

In the fall of 1968, Donald J. Trump received a timely diagnosis of bone spurs in his heels that led to his medical exemption from the military during Vietnam.

For 50 years, the details of how the exemption came about, and who made the diagnosis, have remained a mystery, with Mr. Trump himself saying during the presidential campaign that he could not recall who had signed off on the medical documentation.

Now a possible explanation has emerged about the documentation. It involves a foot doctor in Queens who rented his office from Mr. Trump’s father, Fred C. Trump, and a suggestion that the diagnosis was granted as a courtesy to the elder Mr. Trump.

The podiatrist, Dr. Larry Braunstein, died in 2007. But his daughters say their father often told the story of coming to the aid of a young Mr. Trump during the Vietnam War as a favor to his father.

Still think Kelly is the one Harris should go for as running mate. He beat the sitting Republican to get the gig in Arizona and is well used to pressure situations from his time as a Navy pilot and NASA astronaut. His record of pubic service craps all over that of Vance. Plus he's got his identical twin brother, Scott, they could send out on the campaign trail and double the amount of events that they could cover, who would know!

If elected he'd also look out for NASA and advocate for getting them adequate funding and potentially sorting out the mess that is Boeing and the ULA. As VP would he be the first person who's flown in space to be at that level of govt, I think so. Almost life imitating art as in "For All Mankind".

to be honest, i don't rate highly any of the current contestants, most of them were not elected rather installed, only Trump is elected, but i know who I'd pick

luckily i don't need to choose, I pity the Americans for the choice they have

What are you talking about? Harris was elected just like Biden. Her possible VP picks are mostly governors and senators, also elected. Buttigieg is an appointee, not sure about any others.

Edit: Maybe you are referring to the candidate selection. It is not entirely clear. Trump won the primary selection process so he was selected but he hasn't been elected to anything yet. It is true that Vance was 'installed' by him but that is how the process works. The chosen presidential candidate gets to choose the running mate.

The democratic VP candidates have been neither elected nor installed. They are still under consideration. Eventually one will be chosen by Kamala Harris. An election will soon follow and one of the packages will be declared winner.

John Key was the chosen one, and everyone knew it even if Donald Brash did not.
Christopher Luxon ...

Kamala Harris had serious indications of that party delegate support before making a run.

Will still need to secure the votes of delegates at Democratic National Convention Aug. 19-22.
Apparently there are about 4000 first ballot delegate voters at this convention.

Some reports do add the context that the VP selection is a 'running mate' by 7th Aug for the Convention.
Most for brevity not using 'presumptive' before her name all the time, given obvious etc.
Others can challenge, though having accessed their chances of outvoting.

Florida Delegates just confirmed they will vote for Harris.

Then there are endorsements from your opposition ?

Republican Arizona mayor endorses Harris, rebukes Trump: 'Choosing country over party'
John Giles, mayor of Mesa, Arizona, endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris over his party's nominee on Monday. Giles pointed to late Republican Sen. John McCain's 'country first' approach

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2024/07/29/mesa-arizona-mayor-john-giles-endorses-harris/74596202007/

""
"This year too much is at stake to vote Republican at the top of the ticket."

"Since Donald Trump refused to accept the outcome of the 2020 election, Republicans have yet to course correct," Giles wrote. "In the spirit of the late Sen. John McCain’s motto, 'Country First,' I call on other Arizona Republicans to join me in choosing country over party this election and to vote against Donald Trump."
