gzt: Kennedy and the Cuban missile crisis is an interesting example.

In public he made strong threats, but behind the scenes he negotiated to get the missiles removed. Negotiations were successful.

Unfortunately the US has let slip away many previously negotiated opportunities to slow the pace of nuclear weapons development in North Korea. The US should return to negotiations with the aim of a freeze in further weapons development and allow the peaceful development of DPRK.

IMHO no way, time and time and time again he does things, gets sanctioned, agrees to play nice, gets food and oil, plays up again, its neverending. hes playing the world as a joke. If I was the US I would prefer diplomacy but no way would I be talking to them, thats just embarrasing, being played like a fool. Thats China s jib, they support NK, and they see SEA as their region to be the main player in

The reality is that negotiations and agreement with DPRK actually did slow significantly the development of nuclear weapons for some time.

You have to be amazed at their scientists though. Although it's likely something like progress or get executed. May I add it's likely only a threat otherwise they might run out of scientists. Maybe progress or no pay.

Batman: No chance of resolving peacefully with the categorically insane dictators.

Far more evidence has been offered in this thread for the insanity of Trump than Kim. That said, I believe both are sane.

Sanity is a continuum - not a binary state.

Meanwhile, after the US announced plans for how they'll strike DPRK's launch facilities using B2 bombers to which end they've been conducting drills (which won't work because of the sheer number of mobile launchers NK can use) the North Koreans mock Trump, saying that his threats are "absolute nonsense" and that only absolute force can work on him.  They declare that they'll have a plan to present to KJU by mid-August to launch 4 Hwasong 12 missile toward Guam - should their leader want (This also won't work as so forewarned - the US will blow them out of the sky assuming that they don't self destruct first).

There's not much "sanity" going on.

Snippets below from some article I read made me chuckle -

Texas megachurch pastor Robert Jeffress, one of President Trump’s evangelical advisers who preached the morning of his inauguration, has released a statement saying the president has the moral authority to take out North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
“When it comes to how we should deal with evil doers, the Bible, in the book of Romans, is very clear: God has endowed rulers full power to use whatever means necessary — including war — to stop evil,” Jeffress said. “In the case of North Korea, God has given Trump authority to take out Kim Jong Un.”

Ummmm ...... I guess that makes it ok then lol

No it started gaining traction when NK pulled out of the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty in 2003, under pressure from US sanctions on oil shipments to NK, based on the belief that NK was enriching uranium (probably true) for use in nuclear programme (possibly not true at the time).

There's a certain inconsistency with US attitudes, India, Pakistan, and Israel also are not signatories to the NNPT.

The US position that they won't enter negotiations with NK until after they commit to disarm - is incredibly stupid - based not only on their (NK's) history, but other nations with nuclear ambitions.

Madness. The US will have to shoot them down, they cant guarantee they will landed 40.166 miles from Guam as intended, then thats an attack by NK

But they wont fire the 4 missiles, as that will lose him his country and rule. But he's said he might, so he might (not).

He is still playing games with all of us. The West should cease ALL exports, I think I read there is quite an amount of goods being sent there, apart from China?

The West should report his goings on but the US Govt should literally not even comment.

If NK launches it will be a lottery as to where the warheads will land.
