But where would the people who were needing one of those 970 houses live whilst waiting for them to be built?

Much like free school lunches. There are times when being pragmatic about what should have been done ignores the basic needs of those most effected.

Probably the same places that the other hundreds of families that can't access emergency housing.

Making some progress is better than Labours costly nothing at all IMO

Where were all of these people housed before the government started using motels? There seems to have been an explosion in the need for emergency housing since this government came into power.

Maybe the need was just ignored before.

It might not get them off the hook, but if National can't get its own facts straight, how can they criticize someone elses? I agree completely that Labours 2017 election promises were founded in about as much fact as Leprechauns' and the Loch Ness Monster.

Heh, apparently some have actually seen the Loch Ness Monster, no-one has ever lived in a Kiwibuild house :)

Perhaps, but I don't think so.

The scale of motel use right through out the country makes it hard for me to accept it was being ignored to that extent. There has to be other factors.

What started out as a temporary solution to a short term problem has become a long festering blight on our society. If you can believe some of the stories, there are families who are living long term in a motel room. That is no way for a family to have to live. It's also hard to believe living in a motel room long term is better than where they might have been.

Coupled with the reported increase in crime levels at these motels, parts of this picture don't add up.

I guess then you'd have to look at all the things National were actually doing when they were dumped, not what Labour's outlandish "do nothing" claims based on comparison to a fantastical set of garbage tier policies that were totally unworkable claimed they were doing.

For a good long while after the 2017 election, there were still more houses being supplied under the Axis Affordable Housing program at Hobsonville Pt for FHBs than there were under Kiwibuild across the entire country.

Andrew Little should not be a minister.

He has managed to pick himself up a nickname in the medical community related to how little he does compared to how much he says he will do.

Shane Reti made the comment yesterday that the Governments current plan around health is akin to putting a brand new steering wheel on a car with tyres that are falling off. Even if you have a good way to handle direction, you aren't going anywhere.

Their refusal to add Nurses to the urgently required fast-track immigration system defies belief.

We haven't hit the peak of winter illnesses let alone the peak of the next wave of Covid infections.

Dr Doolittle comes to mind as one possible nickname.

He isn't a Doctor, he is a Minister. But yeah.

Nurses aren't the only ones.

New Zealand has not trained enough skilled people in many areas for a long while. This is due in some cases to not having the ability/resources to to the training even if we wanted to. Therefore we have relied on skilled people coming in from overseas either on a short term basis or permanent basis.

This governments immigration policy is severely affecting many important industries/services by making it more difficult to bring in skilled overseas people to work here, adding to the already existing shortage

Then you need to factor in New Zealanders who are leaving to do the OE excursion or because cost of living here makes many overseas countries a more attractive proposition.

There are some huge gaps to fill and this government's immigration policy is actively stopping those gaps from being filled. New Zealander's are going to pay the price for a long time to come.
