A Presidential Speech Steeped in Hypocrisy

Trump would have done better to say a few things that sound real than a great many that sound false.

Trump’s speech to the nation after the Las Vegas atrocity was steeped in hypocrisy. He is the least outwardly religious president of modern times, the president least steeped in scripture. For him to offer the consolations of God and faith after mass bloodletting is to invite derision. “It is love that defines us,” said President Trump, and if we weren’t heartbroken, we would laugh.

For once, Trump read the speech exactly as written. Perhaps his aides talked him into it. Because Trump is not a good reader, he read the speech wrong. And because it sounded wrong, he looked bad.

1,516 mass shootings in 1,735 days: America's gun crisis – in one chart

Data compiled by the Gun Violence Archive reveals a shocking human toll: there is a mass shooting – defined as four or more people shot in one incident, not including the shooter – on 9 out of 10 days on average.

This chart is too large to reproduce here - visit US gun control.

Fred99:

Trump is part of the problem, so don't expect him to say too much.

He'll be grieving about the potential political impact, and waiting for instructions about what to say from the NRA.

Disagree here.

Too early to say Trump is part of the problem. GOP sure is. Getting rid of Trump tomorrow wouldn't change a thing as far as gun laws or mass shootings.

Remember little ol New Zealand has more suicides than our road toll....imo that is disgraceful as well.

Can't see why - given what you've said - that you disagree that it's too early to say Trump is part of the problem.  I suppose you could say that if a GOP candidate opposed the NRA, then that would be an act of political suicide.  It's crazy that this became the partisan debacle it is.  But Trump and the NRA campaigned as one.

Not sure what NZ suicide rate has to do with anything.

I'm no shrink - only a lifelong observer of human nature - but it seems to me that the world may soon begin to accept the clown who heads the Divided States of America, even to the extent of bestowing a level of grudging affection upon him.

This could happen if some sort 'stockholm syndrome' effect begins to kick in, or simply because it's less stressful for us to either ignore his 'malicious-jester' cavortings, or even accept them. I mean, we can't remove him, so who's stressed out? It's obvious that he's unworried.

If I'm right, he'll do something soon that has a measure of merit - has to happen by sheer randomness if nothing else - and the world could easily say, with a slightly mystified sigh of relief, 'Hang on, maybe he's not such a bad guy after all'.

Of course, he could just as easily bomb NK. In which case he'll become extremely popular, if only with the small group that overtly supports him.

At least, until the radioactive mist rolls into their backyards.

Anyone watched 'On The Beach' lately?

Trump crowned? No faux King way!

The problem the USA is that it is acceptable to kill someone else "in self defense". That means people who buy guns for that purpose have already self justified their right to kill another human being.

THAT is the big hurdle, the much smaller hurdle after that becomes "Who" can you kill.

Trayvon Martin is a good example, the shooter could have stayed home, out of harms way, hell he was even talking to the cops on the phone. But Stand your Ground laws enabled him

to go out there and shoot and kill another human being. The law said he could do it, the law says it is acceptable to kill.

THAT is the US problem.
