Career wise I think it is too early for Jacinda Arden but absolutely believe she is a PM in waiting. A better choice if Labour is going to risk a change this close to an election would be Grant Robertson and leave Jacinda Arden in the deputy role.

'In waiting' is the very best place for Labour PM's to be...! cool

We have had some good Labour PM's over the years and we will again. I don't dismiss a Party because of name, I chose by policies and talent that best suits the times.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

So yes, the Greens are still on my list.

You do realize that the greens are going to need labour to have any path into a government?

I also take it that as you have voted labor off your list, there is still some chance you may give your vote to national/Act/United Future/Conservatives etc?

The point I am trying to make is that you not doing yourself or any of the parties on the left any favors by saying you not going to support labor. A vote for labor is a vote for the greens, and a vote for the greens is a vote for labor.

I suggest you re analyze your strategy, sometimes its best to vote strategically, even if it means voting for the party you can't handle. Maybe ask yourself the question, who are the absolute worst parties you don't want in government, then vote strategically to prevent that from happening, even if its means a vote for labor.

Your strategy would work for FPP, not MMP.

Exactly. good people, who want to make a difference. Whatever the party. Thats what this country seems to lack, we just have office managers from the leaders down. I am sure there are some top people across all parties, but they dont yet have a voice IMO

I feel we are ready for a change, but I cannot discover a decent alternative to National. I believe the health system is broken as is the welfare system.

Labour should have used this time in opposition to reinvent itself to become relevant again, but its a sad broke party hanging onto its Union roots.

There is something about Arden I dont like and dont trust. I dont like English much either as he comes across as a bit of a jerk.

Winstons party has no depth other than him and I detest the Greens. I like the Act guy, but the party is non existent.

What a dilema!!!

Maybe I shouldnt vote this year.

@Geektastic, could you add anything to your reasons for being a die hard National voter (I think that's what this thread was trying to achieve)? You've said again and again that you'll vote National because you always do - which is a terrible reason, the world changes and governments need to too.

I'd love to hear which policies or values of their's lead you to this discussion.

Personally, I think a change of leadership in Labour will either make or break them. If someone can step up and give that party direction they've got a real chance in this election. So many people seem to be voting National because they don't see a half decent alternative and the main reason Labour isn't one is because of their leadership.

I think this election could get interesting today.

Its just more noise and instability from the left. The Greens have blown it by keeping Metiria Turei and all her drama. Now labour is in the process of blowing it because they lack a leader.

It's simply that I dislike socialism of all persuasions. I prefer autocratic approaches to government based on sound economics and money, not wishy washy touch feely stuff. I believe in low taxation small government that enables economic success, not tax and spend and regulate governments. I believe that simply robbing those who do well to hand it to people who do not is not an answer to anything. Additionally I won't ever vote for the party that will cost me the most money personally.

I am going to break my tradition of keeping my vote secret, for the last three elections I have voted National as I felt they had the policies NZ needed. In the past I have voted Labour, NZ Green and Values.  This year I am not that sure that National have the right stuff but the other parties do not have the right stuff either. If Jacinda Ardern becomes leader I will re look at them.

Just as an experiment, I have deliberately read no "news" sites in NZ nor watched TV news (well, I rarely do that anyway) on NZ channels for at least 4 weeks now (and in the case of TV news, probably 12 months) to see if I actually felt I was missing out on anything.

I have read international news sites and seen international news TV like BBC World and CNN.

In all honesty I do not feel I have missed any more than I have by never watching a whole episode of Shortland Street....!

Edit - I should add for completeness that I have caught the odd news bulletin on RNZ National when in the car.

I tried this once but went the whole way and didn't see any news of any sort for a month while my wife was away. It was just as you say, it was though I hadn't missed anything at all.

Of course these days there would be a completely different, unrecognisable, line up in the White House (except for the President) if you stayed away for a month.

Greens are 15% on the polls,. their highest ever, you need to keep up to date so that you dont post inaccurate comments.

Funny that all those countries have the highest tax rates. It would be a vote to pay more tax.

And labour are what % less? Greens have just gained some labour votes thats all.

How can you claim my comment is inaccurate if those polls are nothing but guesswork anyway?

They estimates. Does anybody know what the polling predictions were in 2014 just before the elections. How accurate was it? Polls dont really work, just look what happened in the USA with Trump. Nobody saw that coming :-)

Calm down your defence outrage. I mistakenly took "The Greens have blown it by keeping Metiria Turei and all her drama." to mean "The Greens have blown it by keeping Metiria Turei and all her drama."

The polls are guesses? the margin of error usually about 3%. So their 15% is probably actually 5%?

You should discuss and take those tinted glasses off.

I guess we should vote for who drops taxes and increases expenditure?
