BBC News - US slams Russian refusal to rule out nuclear arms
today
The latest developments in Ukraine
- Putin's top spokesman refused to rule out the use of nuclear weapons in an interview with CNN on Tuesday, saying they would only be used in the event of an "existential threat" to Russia
- The US Pentagon denounced the statement as reckless, saying "it's not the way a responsible nuclear power should act"
I am old enough to remember the Cuban missile crisis (1962), when I broke into a cold sweat on a hot day, listening to President Kennedy's ultimatum on the radio.
There is a terrible sense of deja vu here. 🙁

That doesn't really mean anything either way. The existential threat that Russia is terrified of is Nato moving into Ukraine and up to the Russian border so that's just saying 'don't even think about it', and any guarantee they give about not doing something is completely worthless. I don't know why the CNN reporter even bothered asking that, unless they were channelling what they thought the viewers wanted asked.
If Napoleon was defeated by General Winter, Putin will be defeated by General Corruption.

As Ive stated a few pages back, that was a different time. USSR vs USA was far worse than than what it is now, BUT both leaders weren't stupid. Nuclear deterrent worked. Now we have less nukes, but we have Putin, aka, Mr WW2 Germany, Idi Amin, and so on. Thats the problem. Im some ways, if Putin made a mistake and let missiles hit Poland, which allowed NATO to act, maybe that could be a good thing, relatively speaking. Russian people are not the problem, China will not act, its a ONE person issue. As WW2 was. Same emotional bias as well, Putin has his hallowed USSR thing, Mr H had his astrological thing (I think)
Glass half full, if this spilled over, we could get a stable world. The world doesnt need ALL to be democratic as long as the governance of choice was peaceful and for the country.

Simplistically Good vs Evil.
No help to innocent Ukrainians though. While we can land on a comet, grab a scoop and return, we still cant get on. Its ;ike having a Poet Laureate who cant start a lawn mower. This needs to change.
Russian generals have had to lead from the front because its amateur army can’t move otherwise.
Really not a good look for someone who likes to play the strongman.
Like Hitler in late 1944/1945, it could be the only reason he's still hanging onto an obviously lost cause is because he can't think of anything else to do and changing nothing pushes out the awful inevitable.
Christ, turn on CNN for a bit, first I hear is that attacks on civilians and civilian targets is denied.Lies lies and more lies
The Washington Post - U.S. determines Russian forces have committed war crimes ...
breaking
The U.S. government has determined members of Russia’s military have committed war crimes in Ukraine, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Wednesday ...
Blinken said that assessment is based in part on U.S. intelligence and pointed to the suffering of civilians in Mariupol, a key port city that’s been the site of continued bombardments.
The remarks come as Biden travels to Brussels on a trip meant to bolster Western alliances as Russia’s increasingly brutal invasion continues, and as NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced plans deploy four more battle groups. ...
The significance of this - it is an "official" White House position statement, rather than just the "personal opinion" of the President.

Just more words. Doesn’t do anything to stop it. The troops are only being deployed to NATO countries so only a deterrence to stop Putin going across the boarder. If chemical weapons were used don’t see strategy changing either, except to send Ukraine protective gear. :(
When Biden said war crimes got the impression slip of tongue and not official, as you said at least it is an official position now, but it doesn’t point at the Russian leadership, just members of the military.

Nah in my opinion this segment is misleading.
The Ordinance Officer placed far too much emphasis on brittle truck tyres while ignoring the large pink elephant in the room - the elephant being that the trucks shown as examples were already mired in the mud (Rasputitsa).
Any pincer movements using a largely mechanized invasion force with armoured spearheads while sticking to main roads to avoid quagmire and a 90mile supply line is doomed?
