The special counsel investigating Hunter Biden charged the president’s son late Thursday on nine counts stemming from his failure to pay his federal taxes on time on millions in income from foreign businesses, the second indictment against him this year ...

A grand jury in the Central District of California charged Mr. Biden with three counts each of evasion of a tax assessment, failure to file and pay taxes, and filing a false or fraudulent tax return, according to the 56-page indictment.

Mr. Biden “engaged in a four-year scheme to not pay at least $1.4 million in self-assessed federal taxes he owed for tax years 2016 through 2019” wrote the special counsel, David C. Weiss, who first began investigating the president’s son five years ago as the Trump-appointed U.S. attorney for Delaware. ...

The Hunter Biden case sits at the crowded intersection of America’s colliding political and legal systems.

There is now a very real prospect that President Biden’s son will be defending himself in two federal criminal trials during a presidential election year - as former President Donald J. From 2016 to 2019, they allege, he earned millions of dollars and didn’t fully pay taxes on it.

Hunter Biden has claimed he was struggling with addiction and debt at the time.

Prosecutors say he bought a Porsche and spent money on drugs and escorts ... “In short, everything but his taxes”.

The NY Times - U.S. Marshal Arrested After Unruly Behavior on Flight to London

London’s Metropolitan Police arrested a 39-year-old deputy U.S. Marshal on Wednesday morning at Heathrow Airport for acting inappropriately while intoxicated on a flight from New York, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

The police in London said they received reports around 6:30 a.m. local time from the staff on an inbound Delta flight “that a passenger was disruptive and had sexually assaulted other passengers and crew.”

The police said he was taken into custody, where he remained as of Thursday morning as an investigation continues.

"The long arm of the law" has taken on a new meaning. 🙄

If New York Republicans had hoped to quickly and cleanly turn the page on the embarrassing saga of George Santos, the week since his expulsion from Congress has not exactly gone as planned.

While party leaders hunkered down in the Long Island suburbs to game out the critical special election to replace him, it emerged that one of their top candidates for the nomination was not technically a Republican at all, but a registered Democrat.

Another Republican who had entered the race earlier this year was convicted of taking part in the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.

[Another candidate had] potentially damaging ties to Mr. Santos through a bizarre business proposition that resembled the classic email scheme with a Nigerian prince.

The Guardian: Republicans to blur faces in January 6 footage as ‘we don’t want them charged’

The House speaker, Mike Johnson, said he would blur the faces of the insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol on January 6 before releasing new footage to the public, in order to shield the rioters from justice.

In a Tuesday press conference Johnson, who was personally involved in efforts to overturn the 2020 election, said: “We have to blur some faces of persons who participated in the events of that day because we don’t want them to be retaliated against and to be charged by the DoJ.”

More than 1,200 defendants have been charged in connection with the January 6 attempt to interrupt the certification of the election, according to a tally by NBC News.

More than 400 have been sentenced to periods of incarceration and an additional 1,000 January 6 participants have been identified but not arrested.

Johnson’s comments come as Colorado’s highest court will hear arguments on Wednesday on whether Trump provoked and participated in the January 6 insurrection – as the January 6 committee found – and if that act requires his removal from the ballot.

The case, the first of several to reach court, will look at if the former president can be disqualified under a section of the 14th amendment that states that anyone who “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” after taking an oath of office to support the constitution is forbidden from holding any public office.

A lower court in Colorado previously found that Trump could remain on the ballot because the insurrection clause does not apply to the office of the president.

Colorado’s secretary of state, Jena Griswold, has said that ruling was “pretty surprising”. Griswold, a Democrat, told Politico: “The court’s decision to say the presidency is excluded from section 3 of the 14th Amendment is the really surprising part. Under that decision, Donald Trump is above the law when it comes to insurrection.”

The United Nations has ordered one of its former officials to repay $63.6 million personally, after he lost a vast amount of U.N. funds by entrusting them to a man he met at a party ...

The huge financial penalty that the U.N. is seeking to impose on the former official, Vitaly Vanshelboim - once the second-in-command at the U.N.’s logistics agency - is the latest fallout from a scandal that The New York Times first reported last year.

Mr. Vanshelboim and his boss, seeking to raise their profile within the U.N., amassed millions for the organization by charging governments and other U.N. agencies extra for construction jobs.

Then they invested about $60 million with companies all linked to a British businessman named David Kendrick, defying internal warnings and dangerously concentrating their risk.

The investments were meant to finance renewable energy and housing projects. But they went poorly, according to U.N. audit reports. An inquiry last year found that the U.N. had recouped only about 10 percent of its investment.

If there were any notion that George Santos’s expulsion from the House of Representatives might find him in a state of self-worn disgrace, the past several days would appear to prove otherwise.

In the 10 days since he was kicked out of Congress, Mr. Santos has carried his hard-won notoriety with panache.

He has participated in several, lengthy on-camera interviews, including a yet-to-be aired segment with the comedian Ziwe Fumudoh.

He has become a breakout attraction on Cameo, raising his price for a recording video message to $500, immediately placing him among the site’s top-shelf talent.

So many people have bought his videos that in an interview this past weekend with Marcia Kramer of WCBS-TV, Mr. Santos said he had already earned the equivalent of his congressional salary in one week.

But for Mr. Santos, the price of that notoriety may be looming.

On Tuesday, he appeared in federal court on Long Island, where prosecutors and his lawyer told a judge that they were in the early stages of negotiating a plea agreement that could negate the need for a trial.

Mr. Santos has pleaded not guilty to 23 felony charges. ...
