My own preference is for STV. In my perfect world political parties wouldn't exist at all. There would always be political groups and clubs, of course, but they wouldn't have any legal status. When you have parties you have cliques and elites and patronage and maneuvering and back-room deals and all the crap that characterises politics. I don't see the need for ideologies. You can have candidates with progressive views and social conservatives and libertarians and environmentalists and whatever and they can still all work together and find common ground. No-one has a monopoly on the truth. The Westminister Parliamentary model with one group in power and a so-called 'loyal opposition' backbiting everything they do is nonsense. There are good and bad ideas all across the political spectrum. I would rather vote for those than some nebulous party political 'philosophy'. I have never found any political party that I agree with or that adequately represents my views. But there are plenty of good ideas out there worth voting for.

Peter Dunne supports exactly cannabis law reform and STV. Also your entire paragraph sounds exactly like Peter Dunne. I'm not joking. What is it you don't like? Must be the bow tie. ; ).

This in response to a question about the change regarding medical marijuana approvals. He has been in parliament forever. He has been a Minister much of that time. He has been on all sides of the political spectrum. He has had more than time enough to actually do something. It is way past time for a change.

One Associate Minister can't do much( I dont believe he is even in cabinet)....softening marijuana laws would probably be a conscious vote and it wouldnt have a hope in hell of passing. Not only is National against it so are most of the others. Dunne was probably just preaching the obvious...

That's because he's not willing to conflate marijuana laws which are aimed at curbing the use/abuse of an illicit substance and medical cannabis extracts.

There is a huge difference between approving a tested and managed medication and opening a a drug for recreational use and abuse. Would you want to see opiates opened up for recreational use?

That may be so but he has had long enough. It is time to try someone new.

There were some changes recently announced by Dunne. NORML says they are 100% bs. I have to agree with NORML on that one. It appears that any progress is mostly illusory.

I do think Dunne has actually worked pretty hard on the necessary regulatory framework for medical use, and that experience is most likely useful for the medical marijuana part.

Is Dunne one of those that pledges to join the biggest party?

I don't want this to turn into another drugs thread. We already have a perfectly good one. I will just say that politicians who deny reality, and dither around instead of actually doing something meaningful or acting like real leaders, merely increase public contempt for the law. For the handful of people receiving 'approved' cannabis medications, there are almost certainly hundreds, maybe thousands, self-medicating. For all the penalties for buying, selling, possessing or using marijuana, New Zealand is reputed to have the highest proportion of recreational users in the world. This tells me, loudly and clearly, that no-one gives a sh!t what the law says. I don't think that bodes well for our society, or for our out-of-touch political system.

Those tactics are overt. Voters get to respond to those tactics nationally via their party vote and locally in relevant electorates. The same tactics are available to both sides.

Greens have decided to flip-flop on their long-held position of being strongly against electorate tactics and employ them in Ohariu. That's totally OK because it's legal for them to do so. It's also very sensible because it avoids splitting the left vote. I can't believe it took them so long.

Subverting the proportionality of the outcome is cheating in my opinion. You don't share that opinion.....and that's fine.
