There will always be predators. These are simply people without principles out to make an easy dollar. I am a lot more bothered by the crazies who follow them. True fanaticism is scary stuff.

The problem isn't Religion, it's extremism and a lack of tolerance. If it wasn't Religion, it would be something else.

You can't blame Religion for this type of behaviour.

Tolerance needs to be taught at schools.

Tolerance and Dogma are different sides of the spectrum.

Religion relies on dogma.

In the distant past I shared my home with a group of hackers. They were young and thought it was tremendously funny to set up a company called SATAN Research with a phone line in my house. The letters were an acronym for a perfectly reasonable-sounding technical enterprise. I no longer recall the precise name.

After they left I had phone calls for two years from wannabe satanists all over Europe who flat-out refused to believe me when I tried to tell them it was all a huge misunderstanding. They seemed to think it was a test of some kind. They always went away terribly disappointed.

I often thought, had I been otherwise disposed, that I could have easily set up a fake devil-worship cult and made tons of money from donations. I see no difference between this and evangelical forms of worship. Never underestimate the human capacity for gullibility.

Bear in mind at least 30% of evangelicals do not approve of Trump at this point. Personally I would not assume an American is a Trump supporter simply because they identify as evangelical.

Lots of people don't approve of Trump. But they continue to support him, either explicitly or implicitly. Maybe self-serving hypocrites should be added to the title of this thread.

Not too dissimilar to some of the people who post in this forum. We just have it a little more diluted.

Years ago, one of the more active posters here, when asked, said he would not vote Labour even if they had policies he agreed with. Even if he did not agree with National policies at the time, he would still vote National.

... and more days than not you'll find him, and others here, claiming they are 100% unbiased.

So yeah, not that surprising to find a more concentrated form of that in the US.

Incitement to violence versus free speech is tough. I don't pretend to know the answer.

The US Supreme Court prohibits "advocacy of the use of force" when "such advocacy is directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action and is likely to incite or produce such action."

However you can count on one hand how many times it's been used in a hundred years.

Internationally, Article 20 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, states "Any advocacy of national, racial or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence shall be prohibited by law."

However I've never heard of either applied to free speech on the Internet.

Oddly there are US state laws in mid-Western states that specifically outlaw "incitement to violence," but I'd strongly suspect state law enforcement would never be apply it to right-wingers, just the left and Muslims.

Israeli politicians have often used incitement to violence arguments against Palestinian freedom of speech.

Again it's hard to know the balance between free speech versus incitement to violence.

I find it incomprehensible that people believe that sort of material. There are points of view I don't get but can understand the perspective. But this, I can't even understand how anyone in a literate society would even believe it.

1. There have always been crazy people. They just didn't have an Internet megaphone.

2. There seems to be a strong anti-science current in society today. I don't know why, but I do know intelligent people I respect who are drawn to magical thinking for some reason, rejecting evidence-based data in favour of some self-appointed spiritual healer in America (usually) who claims to receive special wisdom from talking to angels. I have no idea what causes this particular irrationality, but I think more and more people are seriously (?) claiming to believe in a flat earth.

3. I would try very hard to avoid crazy people with guns. There seem to be a lot of them in the USA.

The only thing new about this is that easy availability/sharing of information via the internet should have fixed it, but it's not working out so well.

I don't think religious nutters are confined to Christian evangelism. Well distributed through many religions.
