@tdgeek As a nation we have muddled along for too long without a constitution. We do have a collection of constitutional documents but no constitution as such.

We can certainly collate the constitutional documents into one, perhaps that is a good idea now.

I didnt really think this thread would go this way. I assumed some like the idea of the current powerless link to the home country (for those of us with UK roots) and others want to be fully seperate from the UK Royalty

Even though nothing would change how we govern, as we aren't controlled by the Royal Monarchy anyway. Pro's and Con's etc.

But it does seem quite emotive, and more so, that there would be difficult issues to address, which I cannot agree with. If the Royal Monarchy had power over us, we would need to work out how to break away. But we have already broken away as The British Empire is no more, its a Commonwealth of independent cousins

I think it's always going to be an emotive issue for many, on both sides of the discussion. It's not even an issue that follows traditional lines either, I know "lefties" that are monarchists and "righties" that are republicans.

@MikeB4

No true Englishman would ever contemplate such a thing. It’s a fantasy of Guardian readers and Islington champagne socialists.

If it ever came to an actual vote rather than bs in the pub trying to seem edgy and right on, the monarchy would be quite safe.

I genuinely think as a nation we are far too divided to ever be able to agree on what should be in a constitution.

If I showed this to my family in "The City" they would spray their coffee all over their offices. My son certainly does not drink lolly water (bubbly wine) he is a Scotch and Gin drinker 😀

You are correct that a vote now would retain the monarchy but the numbers who believe that the institution has had its time is growing especially amongst younger generations. That is why I say that it is not inconceivable that a vote to abolish could happen at some point. I feel that maybe the monarchy could themselses elect to change and to reduce their roles to similar to the of the  Danish royals.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

You are not wrong there, look at the angst over a cycle way or tree pruning. However the discussion must be had and the process started. It is better to do it thn have thrust upon us or we could end up with too much government and not enough governance.

I'd wager we couldn't even agree on how to start the discussion process lol.

The Aotearoa name seems to be a current racist dog whistle.

The topic is about New Zealand becoming a republic. You are the one who brought flag and country name into this discussion. I would rather not go into those topics in this thread.

I'm not trying to pick a fight, but I disagree that I raised the name. The legal and official name of our country is New Zealand, not Aotearoa or Aotearoa New Zealand. Mike introduced the the country name when he said "My personal view it is time for Aotearoa to stand as a fully independent nation." when clearly we were talking about NZ becoming a republic.

Happy to take it up in DM's thou if you prefer.

The official name for us is "New Zealanders", but I (like millions of people) like to refer to myself with the Maori word "Kiwi".  I hope you're not offended by that.

Love the word Kiwi, short, easy to say and descriptive. No wonder it’s embraced world wide.

Offence is taken, not given, and I try not to take it too often, so no, I'm not offended by that. However I would be offended if someone constantly referred to NZ as "East Australia" rather than it's correct name because they passionately believe we should take up the option to join the Commonwealth of Australia..

It's great until you encounter an American who is only familiar with it's use to describe the fruit :-P

This thread perfectly illustrates why we should just leave things as they are.

Yep, we're in total agreement there.  I would also hate for Aotearoa to become part of Australia - or any other country for that matter.

While I personally agree we should leave this thing as it is, I tend to agree with Mike that we shouldn't necessarily shy away from discussing and debating things. Not talking about things increases the chances of people being left sitting in echo chambers and only hearing what they want to hear.

As enjoyable as Geekzone is it is not indicative of Aotearoa as a whole. It is very much an echo chamber when it comes to these topics.
