New Zealand and France announced today that the two nations will bring together countries and tech companies in an attempt to bring to an end the ability to use social media to organise and promote terrorism and violent extremism, in the wake of the March 15 terrorist attacks in Christchurch New Zealand.

The meeting will take place in Paris on May 15, and will be co-chaired by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The meeting aims to see world leaders and CEOs of tech companies agree to a pledge called the ‘Christchurch Call’ to eliminate terrorist and violent extremist content online.

The meeting will be held alongside the “Tech for Humanity” meeting of G7 Digital Ministers, of which France is the Chair, and France’s separate “Tech for Good” summit, both on 15 May. Jacinda Ardern will also meet with civil society leaders on 14 May to discuss the content of the Call.

“The March 15 terrorist attacks saw social media used in an unprecedented way as a tool to promote an act of terrorism and hate. We are asking for a show of leadership to ensure social media cannot be used again the way it was in the March 15 terrorist attack,” Jacinda Ardern said.

“We’re calling on the leaders of tech companies to join with us and help achieve our goal of eliminating violent extremism online at the Christchurch Summit in Paris.

“We all need to act, and that includes social media providers taking more responsibility for the content that is on their platforms, and taking action so that violent extremist content cannot be published and shared.

“It’s critical that technology platforms like Facebook are not perverted as a tool for terrorism, and instead become part of a global solution to countering extremism. This meeting presents an opportunity for an act of unity between governments and the tech companies.

“In the wake of the March 15 attacks New Zealanders united in common purpose to ensure such attacks never occur again. If we want to prevent violent extremist content online we need to take a global approach that involves other governments, tech companies and civil society leaders

“Social media platforms can connect people in many very positive ways, and we all want this to continue.

“But for too long, it has also been possible to use these platforms to incite extremist violence, and even to distribute images of that violence, as happened in Christchurch. This is what needs to change.”

Victim of racist attack mocked after telling court staff that she was going to a funeral of a Chch victim

Yes, it's unrealistic to expect a court hearing to be adjourned just so a victim can read a victim impact statement (it's not a fashionable opinion but I have zero idea why such things exist in the first place as a former lawyer for the prosecution, defence and judiciary sides of the fence) in person. After all, the prosecution can read it on her behalf or it can simply be handed up to the sentencing judge. But there's no excuse for the court staff to laugh at her like this in the circumstances. And given that there's a direct quote from a MoJ senior manager admitting that the staff members concerned were being douchebags, the story is certainly true. If the MoJ had any standards (they don't -- judges' lawyers,  as I was,  are paid out of a budget administered by them and I saw how MoJ staff worked up close in the courts), the staff concerned would have been fired. And they deserved nothing less.

These stupid evil morons:

Members of Destiny Church affiliated groups have met opposite the Al Noor Masjid to proclaim Christchurch a Christian city.
...
"The purpose was to stand out in the open and to declare that Christchurch and New Zealand belongs to Jesus Christ who is the one true god."

Like hell.

I'm highly confident that what these morons are trying to do is about as remote from following the teachings of Christ as you could possibly get.  Absolute shame on them.

According to the latest available data, those who identify as christian are now officially a minority in this country, making the Destiny Church claims untrue in more ways than one. Maybe they should just put the megaphones away and go home.

These kind of people feed on our outrage. They can't be ignored because of the damage they do, but they don't have to be fed either. Don't give them the satisfaction of notoriety.

Agree. It does show an underbelly. Tamaki is the same ilk. Different goals, same crap. This guy wont get home detention, and I hope the Police dig deep. I wouldnt call myself naive, but Id never imagine Aryan preachers like this guy here, and trading in crap with fellow lowlifes. The Police and the public have a job to do.

Arps is going to have a great time in prison. Likely to need to be in solitary confinement for his own protection. What a loser.

"Philip Arps asked for Christchurch District Court Judge Stephen O'Driscoll to have him assessed for a possible home detention sentence, but the judge ruled it out, indicating Arps would be jailed."

Yeah, sure... Nah. Jail it is.

Army veteran charged with plotting terror attacks in LA area

A 26-year-old former US Army soldier who served in Afghanistan has been charged with plotting terror attacks in the Los Angeles area, the Justice Department said Monday.

Mark Steven Domingo allegedly sought to detonate improvised explosive devices containing nails this past weekend at a rally in Long Beach that was organized by a white nationalist group.

He was arrested Friday night after he took receipt of what he thought were pressure cooker bombs, US Attorney Nick Hanna announced at a press conference.

"Law enforcement was able to identify a man consumed with hate, and bent on mass murder and stop him before he was able to carry out his attack," Hanna said.

Domingo allegedly wanted to "seek retribution for attacks against Muslims" and also considered attacks on Jewish people, churches and law enforcement.

He is accused of targeting "Jews as they walked to synagogue, police officers, a military facility, and crowds at the Santa Monica Pier."

On March 2, DOJ says Domingo posted a video online professing his Muslim faith and wrote, "America needs another Vegas event," referring to the mass shooting in Las Vegas in October 2017 in which more than 50 people died.

Domingo is a recent convert to Islam, Hanna said.

He wanted to give "them a taste of the terror they gladly spread all over the world," according to the Justice Department.

Following a mass shooting attack on a mosque in New Zealand in March that killed dozens of people, Domingo posted, "there mustbe (sic) retribution."

Domingo asked an FBI informant to find someone to construct an IED, according to the Justice Department. He met with the informant and came armed with an AK-47 style rifle.

There is no ongoing threat to public and no known co-conspirators, Hanna said.

Hanna said the "criminal case outlines a chilling terrorism plot that developed over the past two months and targeted innocent Americans that he expected to gather this past weekend."

Where do these people keep coming from? What do they think they can possibly achieve by randomly murdering others? I really don't get it.

So what's the deal with Victim Support? I donated to the Givealittle page to help the victims of this terrible tragedy. I did not give the money to Victim Support to do with it as they like. If they are revictimising people with bureaucratic BS then that seriously pisses me off! Either give my money to the people it is intend for, or give it back!

Tools. They employ PR agencies to deal with this, adding to admin costs. It's what we always know - "admin costs" eat most of the donations to any cause. And guess what? The longer it runs, the costly it will be.
