ezbee:

Even on TV we were told...
Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" typically opened with a voiceover that spoke about the time when the gods were cruel

Ironic that the star of that show was Kevin Sorbo, a (now) Trump-loving MAGA icon:

gzt: Nutjob.

Sorbo questioned the identity of the Democratic presidential nominee in a post on X, writing: "If Kamala really is black, have her say the N-word, let the people decide for themselves".

Words fail me.

Elon probably thinks Hercules is the man too! 🙄

Contemporary monotheistic religions are Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism, Bahaism, Jizidism and Zoroastrianism. I think Musk will find it quite difficult to be widely recognised as the one God. But it should be enough for the role of a devil. 😁

This video has a lot of talk about Musk. Elon fan boys, you're not going to like this video.

Sorry. Your Car Will Never Drive You Around

Never is a very long time. If you asked people 200 years ago if machines would be doing your washing, they’d probably laugh at you and then wonder how you got electricity in your house.

Times change faster than we can keep up, and self-driving cars are just one more step in that evolution. Of course it's going to happen, only a fool will believe otherwise.

Some of the Tesla tests in that video are eye opening.

I did not see a section where Jordan claimed "Your Car Will Never Drive You Around".

Maybe that is a clickbait youtube title. I did skim the video and may have missed the relevant part.

It's easy to forget that the original Luddites threw spanners into weaving machines, not out of a hatred of technology, but because the owners of capital were hogging all the gains. If anything Luddites were a forerunner to the trade union movement.

The same goes with driverless vehicles. How would they handle acts of sabotage such as tyre slashing or blockades? And that's without mentioning hacking.

I don't recall anyone objecting to driverless vehicles on that basis.

Progress is only about the advancement of time,  there is no inherent law about things improving in any manner. Change just means things are different.

Entropy increases over time, empires come and go, species go extinct.

No, we are not going to colonise space, in the words of Douglas Adams "Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is".

The question might be better phrased as "Will self driving cars be adopted by the masses before climate change makes it a really really low priority?".

For a man who knows more about manufacturing than anyone else in the world ... you would have to ask why he is building a factory that does not have the local resources it needs....in abundance so that a climate event...ie drought, does not compromise the ability of the factory to operate.

Guess he is going to use his buddy Trump to allow hime to take water off others, ie the poor, local farmers, small communities etc.

It's already happened to Waymo taxis...

A crowd destroyed a driverless Waymo car in San Francisco

I wonder how long the UK, Canada, Germany and other countries will allow him to interfere with local government.

What a prick.

The article does not indicate that was a primary motive. The article does indicate product safety might be the primary concern - "takes place against the backdrop of simmering tension between San Francisco residents and automated vehicle operators. The California DMV suspended Waymo rival Cruise’s robotaxi operations after one of its cars struck and dragged a pedestrian last year, and prior to that, automated taxis had caused chaos in the city, blocking traffic or crashing into a fire truck. Just last week, a Waymo car struck a cyclist who had reportedly been following behind a truck turning across its path"

A few more details elsewhere. There were no users in the vehicle. The vehicle was approaching a large crowd during a street festival probably trying to make it's way through:

USNews: Some [conventional] vehicles turned around or backed up after seeing the crowds, according to a Reuters witness. A few [conventional] cars crept through the intersection periodically, as crowds parted to let them pass. The Waymo was attacked when it stopped as it approached the crowd, holding up a couple of cars behind it

Navigating that scenario can be somewhat challenging for a human driver. It is potentially very difficult for an automated vehicle. It seems likely the automated vehicle stopped, held up traffic, with some unpredictable result. From there, the short clips I've seen show people damaging the vehicle while other members of the crowd yell encouragement.

Probably. Elon must have some cockamamie plan in mind. OTOH, we all know his hubris exceeds his intelligence, so who knows what will end up happening. It'll probably end up being another white elephant like the Cybertruck.
