I wonder what the two people who support this post so far are actually supporting?

1. Do they support the fact that the Trump administration is quitting?

2. Do they support the fact that this poverty has been going on for decades?

3. Or do they support the fact that this long standing inequality has been the tipping point for many voters, sadly desperate enough to vote for Trump in a last ditch hope for change?

I suspect 3 is the truth here, and the sooner the Leftie Lib Dems start to address this, the sooner this sad country may get back to some sort of normality.

Judging by his past history, it's a backstop because he can turn it after the mid terms to a positive whether he gets slammed or not. Sneaky and smart, especially if Putin agrees. You never know, the outcome may already have been decided! Better than 3 dimensional chess.

That's also a (possibly unintended) second consequence of the concept of "meritocracy".

It seems on the surface of things very fair to reward the most able, the hardest working, with material wealth.

First consequence of that is that then material wealth can be seem to be "evidence" of the person being able and hard working - how they became wealthy isn't of much consequence. Win lotto, have Fred Trump as a father, be like Jed Clampett and find an oil well when you're hunting squirrels for dinner - doesn't matter - you're elevated on the social scale.

Second consequence is inverse meritocracy in action - if you don't have material wealth then you're not able, not hard working, so deserve no more than the misery you've got.

I'm not sure about placement in a "scale of evil", but the white Southern Baptist cult is a serious problem. Their leaders are Trump advocates in a bigly way, as for Trump's philandering, lying, narcissism, greed, racism - not "endorsing" that behaviour, but literally preaching that Trump is there because of God (well I mean - how else could anybody so unlikely have become president?) and as such, as God's messenger, he's there for a reason, God wanted it, so you better fall in behind him - or burn in eternal hell.

Yes - they are that nuts - and yes - there are a lot of them.

Trump doesn't just lie about big things, or things that challenge his vanity. He lies about everything. Here is a National Geographic article detailing environmental protection measures he has rolled back, and then lied about. This was discovered because some unredacted data was accidentally made available. The problem was that the excuses used to justify rollback measures turned out to be wrong, so this information was hidden. Rather than admit that the changes were based on incorrect assumptions, Trump's Ministry of Propaganda just lies about it and soldiers on. An excerpt:

'On July 16, the Interior Department's Freedom of Information Act team uploaded thousands of pages of documents that had not been completely redacted. The next day, officials took down these documents and replaced them.

The erroneously un-redacted documents contain facts that cast some monuments in a positive light. One 2017 analysis by the Bureau of Land Management mentioned that once Grand Staircase-Escalante became a national monument, the annual rate of archaeological listings in the area more than doubled, and vandalism dropped. In December 2017, President Trump moved to shrink the monument by 46 percent.

In another document, Interior Department official Randal Bowman recommended deleting fishing data from an assessment of the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument. The administration reviewed the Atlantic Ocean monument—which President Obama created in 2016—amid concerns that the monument's ban on fishing hurt local fishers.

Bowman sought to nix data showing that from 2005 to 2014, about two-thirds of the area's shipping vessels generated less than five percent of their annual landings from the waters that became the monument.

“This section is based on information provided by NOAA and the Fishery Management Council, and so can be presumed accurate,” he wrote in a comment. “However, including all this information undercuts the case for the ban being harmful.”'

Some good old boys are going to lodge articles of impeachment against deputy AG Rosenstein - because he won't (or can't) fire Mueller and they want to shut down the enquiry.

AG Sessions can't fire Rosenstein of Mueller under pressure from Trump - because he's recused himself from the enquiry. They want Trump to just fire Rosenstein and replace him with someone who will fire Mueller, Trump can't use executive power to do that directly - it's unconstitutional. Grounds for the impeachment are that Mueller is withholding information they requested. Mueller is withholding the information because releasing it would jeopardise the enquiry.

If this goes ahead (not likely I hope - there must be enough Republicans with a spine to put country ahead of their own ambition), then it's the end of checks and balances - and thus pretty much the end of representative democracy in the US.

If this happens, first there will be protests, then riots, then possibly worse.
