New York Times Publisher and Trump Clash Over President’s Threats Against Journalism

By Mark Landler

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. — President Trump and the publisher of The New York Times, A. G. Sulzberger, engaged in a fierce public clash on Sunday over Mr. Trump’s threats against journalism, after Mr. Sulzberger said the president misrepresented a private meeting and Mr. Trump accused The Times and other papers of putting lives at risk with irresponsible reporting.

Mr. Trump said on Twitter that he and Mr. Sulzberger had discussed “the vast amounts of Fake News being put out by the media & how that Fake News has morphed into phrase, ‘Enemy of the People.’ Sad!”

In a five-paragraph statement issued two hours after the tweet, Mr. Sulzberger said he had accepted Mr. Trump’s invitation for the July 20 meeting mainly to raise his concerns about the president’s “deeply troubling anti-press rhetoric.”

“I told the president directly that I thought that his language was not just divisive but increasingly dangerous,” said Mr. Sulzberger, who became publisher of The Times on Jan. 1.

“I told him that although the phrase ‘fake news’ is untrue and harmful, I am far more concerned about his labeling journalists ‘the enemy of the people,’” Mr. Sulzberger continued. “I warned that this inflammatory language is contributing to a rise in threats against journalists and will lead to violence.”

NYT publisher warned Trump about labeling journalists enemies

The Last Temptation

The Atlantic

"One of the most extraordinary things about our current politics ... is the loyal adherence of religious conservatives to Donald Trump. The president won four-fifths of the votes of white evangelical Christians. This was a higher level of support than either Ronald Reagan or George W. Bush, an outspoken evangelical himself, ever received.

"Trump’s background and beliefs could hardly be more incompatible with traditional Christian models of life and leadership."

According to Jerry Falwell Jr., evangelicals have “found their dream president,” which says something about the current quality of evangelical dreams.

I think the key word is white evangelical Christians. I suspect if you included all evangelical Christians it would be lower.

Perhaps it's the last hurrah

We're at the end of white Christian America. What will that mean?
By Jason Wilson

"After accounting for eight out of 10 Americans in 1976, white Christians are now a minority, a study has found. The political implications could be profound

America is a Christian nation: this much has always been a political axiom, especially for conservatives. Even someone as godless and immoral as the 45th president feels the need to pay lip service to the idea. On the Christian Broadcasting Network last year, he summarized his own theological position with the phrase: 'God is the ultimate.'

And in the conservative mind, American Christianity has long been hitched to whiteness. The right learned, over the second half of the 20th century, to talk about this connection using abstractions like 'Judeo-Christian values', alongside coded racial talk, to let voters know which side they were on.

But change is afoot, and US demographics are morphing with potentially far-reaching consequences. Last week, in a report entitled America’s Changing Religious Identity, the nonpartisan research organization Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) concluded that white Christians were now a minority in the US population.

Soon, white people as a whole will be, too."

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/how-trump-and-race-are-splitting-evangelicals/

How Trump And Race Are Splitting Evangelicals

"The Rev. Billy Graham, the pastor and evangelical leader who died last week and is being laid to rest in Charlotte on Friday, built relationships across party lines, illustrated by the praise Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump delivered after his death. But it likely will be hard for an evangelical Christian figure in this era to get the kind of bipartisan acclaim that Graham received in life and in death.

America’s community of self-described evangelicals, about a fourth of the population, is increasingly divided between a more conservative, Trump-aligned bloc deeply worried about losing the so-called culture wars; and a bloc that is more liberal on issues like immigration, conscious of the need to appeal to nonwhite Christians and wary of the president. The split in evangelical Christianity isn’t new, but it appears to be widening under Trump."

https://edition.cnn.com/2018/07/30/politics/giuliani-interview-trump-russia/index.html

The 37 strangest lines in Rudy Giuliani's off-the-rails CNN interview

Analysis by Chris Cillizza, CNN Editor-at-large

1. "It's good, it's attention-grabbing."

2. "When you're getting beaten up by all kinds of anonymous tweets you know are coming from Lanny Davis and Cohen..."

3. "Mueller, stand up and be a man."

4. "I can't tell you. I'm not sure exactly what the conflict is. I have a good idea of what it is -- it's one that would have kept me out of the investigation."

5. "Mueller hasn't contributed to a Republican, he worked for Obama and worked for Republicans."

6. "Andrew Weissmann, you know who Andrew Weissmann is -- he's a complete scoundrel."

7. "It's up to the President to describe it in further detail if he elects to do so. Or if Mueller would like to explain why it's not a conflict, I invite Bob to do it."

8. "It's Mueller who possibly hasn't disclosed the conflict."

9. "I think he was hoping maybe it had passed Mueller by or maybe he had he gotten over it."

10. "We have 183 unique tape recordings."

11. "Cohen always goes too far, and when you're lying, there's always a trap for you. He said there was a one-on-one meeting that Donald Jr. came in and told him about the meeting was about to take place."

12. "Also in all of these months and all of these tapes, [Cohen's] never said it. And all of a sudden it appears now when he's maybe going to go to jail and singing for himself."

13. "We're being aimed at by a -- luckily, not a very artful liar -- but a liar."

14. "What I think and what I know may be two different things."

15. "I know how convinced he is that he didn't do anything wrong and wants to explain it and I've seen other people get into trouble thinking that, innocent people."

16. "I guess the judgment's out."

17. "We're going to do obstruction by tweet on a President of United States as an article of impeachment?"

18. "And [Mueller] has no incriminating information incriminating of the President."

19. "I mean that just -- four months, they are not going to be colluding about Russians which I'm not -- I don't even know if that's a crime, colluding about Russians."

20. "You start analyzing the crime. The hacking is the crime."

21. "Nobody can be sure of anything."

22. "I have to say sorry, I made a mistake, [Cohen] is unethical, he's a scumbag, he's a horrible person."

23. "I can be on all day if you wanted."

24. "I just need a little coffee."

25. "George Washington would have said that about Benedict Arnold at a certain point of time."

26. "[Trump] turned out to have a close friend betray him like Iago betrayed Othello, and Brutus put the last knife into Caesar -- I think they both trusted those people."

27. "I can't tell you whether he would pardon him."

28. "I'm not denigrating Michael Cohen's character."

29. "I've practiced law for a long time, if you tape record your client and lie to your client about (it), you have no character. You forfeited your character."

30. "I just know that you don't do that with a tape and expect that it's going to be admitted into evidence."

31. "More likely is, he came back home, he erased the portion that he wanted erased and then he tried to tape record a conversation that appears with Don Jr., might have gotten that too, and then he erased that."

32. "Alisyn, come on, be fair, they weren't talking about the Playboy model."

33. "He was doctoring tapes. He doctored at the word 'check' he cut the tape off. That's called doctoring a tape."

34. "It's a horrible thing that Mueller is doing."

35. "No, it's starting to get useless."

36. "I'll be here with my version of the report and they'll have their version of the report and the American people, in that sense, are going to decide it."

37. "It was worth it."

Regarding the obscure movie reference in CNN's analysis, when Giuliani says "What I think and what I know may be two different things.", they suggest Trump's lawyer Giuliani is acting like Vizzini, the bald merchant, from the movie "Princess Bride"

When it's looking like there's collusion, then collusion isn't a crime...

Next step is that when the collusion is shown to be a conspiracy with a foreign power to subvert the democratic process - it'll be back to "but her emails" and there's no way the Russians were damaging democracy - they were saving America from That Woman - Lock Her Up.

OTOH, the President himself has been getting away with blatant lies, hypocrisy, contradicting himself, assorted word salad illogical rants, abuse, direct and implied threats, whatever.  In the court of public opinion - not despite this but probably because of this - his chances of not being locked up have probably improved. To face charges he's going to need to be impeached first - public opinion will matter, and if the GOP keeps a majority in the mid-terms, there's no chance of him being impeached. Giuliani is probably doing a great job - Trump supporters (and the GOP) clearly have no problem with lapping up endless streams of BS, putting party before country.

Fred99:

According to Gallup's presidential approval poll (weekly poll published on Tuesdays) Trump's approval is at 43%.

Margin on error is +/- 3%.

I'll wager that his flirting with treason won't make any difference - that next Tuesday his approval will still be over 40%.

The world has a serious problem - it's not just the USA's problem.

Just for reference, his approval ratings on Gallup's poll was:

43% on 15/7
42% on 22/7
40% on 29/7 (55% disapproval)

From Wiki: "LeBron Raymone James Sr. is an American professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Often considered the best basketball player in the world and regarded by some as the greatest basketball player of all time."

kingdragonfly: Mentioned in passing by LeBron James

I sat down this evening and casted your most recent clips on the big screen.

Giuliani gave me a headache. That man is definitely on drugs of some kind. Not the good kind. My heart goes out to the poor journalist who tried to interview him. No-one deserves that.
