So it's as easy to change the constitution as it is to successfully impeach the President.

 

 

You could actually argue it's easier to change the constitution than to impeach president.  Only two presidents have been impeached - Clinton and A Johnson - neither were convicted.  Whereas, the constitution has been amended frequently.

 

If impeachment looks likely to result in conviction a president will jump before pushed - Nixon jumped before impeachment from memory.

 

But realistically what are the chances of getting the constitution amended to allow crimes against humanity?

 

It's not even reasonable to assume Trump would get all republican representatives to support him on something like that - let alone the democrats.

Current state governors are 33 Rep, 16 Dem, 1 Independant - so it's not an impossible scenario if very unlikely.

 

But that's not the immediate threat.

 

The text of the 1st amendment is:

 

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

 

Yet - using executive power - Truman did a comprehensive job of suppressing free speech and freedom of association and political expression, leading to McCarthyism. 

 

Give Trump a sympathetic SCOTUS - and he's quite capable of becoming (even more of) a tyrant.

 

 

Have the states ever proposed an amendment to the constitution?  I know they have ratified amendments, but have the states ever proposed one?

 

As to McCarthyism - I could see terrorism being used as a justification, they way communism was then.  I suspect it would be much, much harder to suppress freedom of speech now.

 

While Truman and McCarthy undoubtedly did suppress freedom of speech to a grievous extent I don't think they can be compared to the murderous despots of 1940s or more recent examples like Saddam Hussein, Pol Pot, Robert Mugabe, Idi Amin or Slobodan Milosevic.

 

Also (again) Trump is struggling to pass law.  His only major legislative achievement, has been a tax cut package. A strength and weakness of the US legislature is its general inertia and that it can be adversarial to the point of paralysis.

 

To change topic slightly the upcoming mid terms can't be far away now.  It's the first major voter feedback on Trump's administration and it will be interesting to see how they go.

As much as I'd like to be wrong, I predict Republicans holding on to the Senate and the House.

 

The only hope the Democrats have is for abstainers to hate Trump enough to go out and vote against the Republicans. Trump was clearly unfit in 2016, but that didn't get them to the polls.

Usually I don't care about ESPN, the USA sport channel, but it does reach a large audience.

Note that African Americans are sensitive when being called dumb or stupid.
Even as recently as 1995, a popular book by J.P. Rushton "Race, Evolution, and Behavior" proposed those of African decent were the least intelligent.

I hate to have to agree with you - because the consequences are awful.

 

To some degree they also didn't go to the polls because it was obvious Hillary was going to win, but some also abstained in protest because of Bernie.

 

Trump's managing to effectively purge the GOP of moderate conservatives or anybody expressing dissent, meanwhile the Dems are dividing themselves, with Dem Socialists wanting to purge establishment Dems - and there's no way in hell that voters that moved from Dem to vote Trump are going to be drawn back when the Dems have a strong and open "Socialist" faction.  Most of all they need a leader.

That was the problem at the last election too

 

The dems alienated their core voters, for whom they have done very little in my lifetime.

 

It would be a shame if Trump gets a second term simply because there is no credible opposition.

IMHO, its not now about Clinton, or Bernie or whatever else, its about Trump. There must be some GOP voters who wont vote or will vote against, in order to slow him down and vote in a new candidate in 2020. There must be huge swaths of DEM voters that did not turn out and will now. The ballgame is a lot different now, they voted on his marketing campaign and he was surprised he won. Now he has 2 years of ridicule as his main campaign promise, and while the hardcore MAGA brigade will still vote for him, surely the US populous will act. A 5% shift would blow him out of the water

Yeah, everybody keeps saying that. Every time another awful Trump revelation is made, everybody says 'Surely this is the end of Trump!' But so far, he's survived enough scandals to sink the career of every MP in all the G7 governments combined, and comes out stronger every time.

 

The reality is that it was 100% crystal clear what a POS Donald Trump was for (at least) the year of the campaign (even if you had been living under a rock up till then), but the majority of Americans either agreed with him, or didn't disagree with him enough to vote against him. Fundamentally, nothing has changed since. I'd like to think you're right, but honestly, I'm not going to hold my breath.

You could fill libraries about basic facts most people know that Trump doesn't.

Here's one more

in the last ten years in the US, you're twice as likely to be killed by local right-wing extremists, like Neo-nazis, than foreign Jihadists.

And this was before the 58 people killed in 2017 in a single Las Vegas shooting by a single white American.

While I don't dispute the overall message of those figures .... 911 would push a 20 year mean for deaths by Jihad to >150.

 

That said - the figures mainly suggest that Americans wishing to avoid a sudden death should eat and bathe more carefully and in particular avoid eating in the bath.
