I feel he has hit a brick wall. You can see when he starts talking about his family he gets emotional and his voice gets softer.
I would suspect his family has come to that conclusion with him over a period of time. The media has not been the slightest help, Jumping at every opportunity to degrade him adding family tension and stress.
8 years gone without watching your kids grow up properly or being there for them must have been hard.

Im waiting to see who the next leader will be, John is strongly behind Bill English but will that be enough to win the next election?

Max's behaviour wasn't disclosed by snooping journalists pushing privacy boundaries. His wounds were entirely self-inflicted from attention seeking behaviour.

Mainstream media in NZ actually does still maintain some level of respect for the private lives of politicians. The blogosphere has no such rules.

IMO Key has had a dream run from NZ media, he's managed to implement policy - which polled very poorly - with hardly a dent to his and the party's popularity.

Would destroy him. I wouldn't wish that upon someone I like.

Plus, and I think kiwis often need reminding, he's a guy who made a living running around holding a ball and knocking people over. I'm sure he's a nice guy - and he can fly a helicopter, hurray! - but playing rugby is just a liiiiiitle bit different to running a country.

As for Key - he did a good job with the economy, but I would never vote for someone who supports as much privacy invading bulk surveillance as he does. Not to mention supporting sending in military-armed, helicopter-mounted police to arrest a man who would have trouble outrunning an armchair, whose alleged crime was making it slightly easier for other people to share copied DVDs.

Well, I am wondering who you think would not have done the same? Andrew Little? Please.

If you think he ordered that personally you don't know how things work.

I am not saying the action was appropriate, just saying it wasn't entirely his fault and the same thing would have happened under Labour too.

What is having them as leader and deputy going to achieve? The policies will still be the same, and the reason people didn't vote for the party in the last election, was because of their policies. People don't really want new taxes, and the people who have been locked out of housing, want some major changes to housing policies, not just minor tweaking. Interesting. Nationals gets a bit over 45% of the vote and you conclude the majority don't want a change in taxes? That doesn't stack up.

Maybe people don't realise the tax cuts mean that landlords won't actually be able to get hearings with Tenancy Tribunal for several months thanks to cost cutting in the Ministry of Justice? Or if you get a hearing, a judge can get it cancelled to use the hearing room for something else...and your hearing gets put back weeks with no guarantee that one won't be cancelled either. This is just one example among many across the entire range of public services.

Fishers are cheating on their quotas? Put cameras on the boats. 80% of the cameras don't work? Oh well. Never mind. We saved some money not using human inspectors. Who gives a rat's about the fish stocks?

Now they want more tax cuts to make things even worse.

National have done huge damage just behind the curtain. Pull it back and have a really good look.

National have for 9 years been governing with the support of other parties like the Maori Party who wouldn't be averse to tax increases if the governing partner was going to carry on funding Maori TV and various social programmes targeting Maori.

National have been two seats away from Opposition for years.

Of course it would've. Labour started a lot (though not all) of that stuff long before National got in, and voted in favour of it also in opposition. Only the minor parties were against it.

EDIT: And as far as 'ordered that action personally' I never said I thought he did. But he is the Minister in charge of the intelligence services who were found to have acted unlawfully in regards to that case as well as something like 80 other times. So much so we just changed the law so it wasn't illegal anymore rather than reign them in.

Prior to Key I'm not aware of the media focussing on a politician's immediate family in the way Key's kids have been focused on.

Max Key put himself in the sights with his behaviour in the cyclist incident and deserved the associated criticism. But many people only criticised him because of who he is not what he did and there was some nasty ad hominem stuff that was clearly politically motivated.

It isn't the first time he has been the subject of negative media coverage. He was castigated for planking (shock, horror) as a teenager. Any time he is covered in the mainstream media websites, the vitriol in the comments section is intense and unmoderated. Stephie Key copped personalised criticism too for some her artwork, ditto vitriol.

I think you have to be a particularly small and nasty person to goes after young people, because you don't like their parent's politics.

When you consider that other MPs (I'm not going to name any) have had multiple immediate family members with criminal convictions and no-one says boo ...

Well put. I have been pretty disappointed by NZ'r in general low opinion of the Key kids, despite having next to no experience with them and having never met them. There are a LOT of assumptions made.

And, lets see how we go next year after they take power (I can't see National taking another term now).

A Labour/Green marriage will not be pretty IMO. All I can hope from it is that they find some money and pump it into Auckland Public Transport. My taxes will go up to pay for it, but I'd rather that than more welfare and bureaucracy.

Oh, and Winnie will probably be the kingmaker. He is our Trump. Imagine him with the Greens...

Sophistry. Labour and the Greens can work together.

National can't work across the board with anyone who gets significant voter support. They only have a majority thanks to the two zombie parties they have cynically rorted MMP with: United Future and ACT. The Royal Commission on the electoral system made it absolutely clear that voters want that rort ended....and National ignored it as they are well aware they would not be in government if vote shares were converted into seats....and they coudn't swap out National MPs in Ohariu-Belmont and Epsom for "fakes".
