Batman:

I think voters have had a taste of Trump and come to the realisation that he's not really as up to doing the job as he told them (sold them, maybe?) back in 2016. Hopefully this time experience trumps "something different", pun intended.

You ain't spoken to many Trump supporting Americans yet.

My uncle-in-law is a diehard Republican and I can tell you he wouldn't vote for Trump in a million years. Nor would a lot of my other in-laws (and I have a fair few) who are Republicans. They can't stand the guy.

In any case, Trump hasn't exactly done a lot to expand his base since 2016 either, has he?

I couldn’t find anything from CNN, Washington Post, New York Times, etc about a congressional resolution calling for the Democratic Party to change its name due to its historic links to slavery.

https://www.cbs19.tv/article/news/local/louie-gohmert-democrats-must-change-name-or-be-barred-from-house-due-to-racist-past/501-9fe67711-47e1-4ade-ada3-286fa20b443f

Are the Democrats going to be tripped up by their own attempts to ‘cleanse’ history? I would be interested to hear the views of the GZers that closely follow American politics.

Note: Louie Gohmert is (according to Wikipedia) a typical republican in his views on abortion, climate, law and order, religion, etc.

This is just background static. It doesn't mean a thing. By the same logic, Native Americans are the only ones with a legitimate claim to be in America, and all non-Maori should go back where they came from.

The problem with Confederate symbols is not what they stood for then, but what they stand for now.

So why the call to rename Army bases if it’s only the confederate flag? Or pull down statues of past Presidents? Or rename streets?

I must admit I didn’t know the history of the Democratic Party and its links to slavery and the KKK until I read this article and looked into it a bit more.

Historically the Democrats did support slavery and the KKK while the Republicans advocated emancipation. But the past is not the present and those who wear the Republican and Democrat tags today are very different from those who did so in the past. It is also worth reminding that it was Democrat President Truman who desegregated the American military, while Democrat President Kennedy supported the civil rights movement, and Southern Democrat Lyndon Johnson was instrumental in getting the Civil Rights Act, which specifically prohibits racial segregation and discrimination, passed into law. Representative Louie Gohmert is a dogmatic ultra-conservative Tea Party Republican. He may or may not be 'typical' of Republicans today, but he is certainly not typical of the traditional moderate Republicans often associated with President Reagan (whose foundation has just asked the Trump campaign and the RNC to stop using Reagan's image in their fund-raising efforts).

The Confederate flag is not the only symbol of the racist past that causes offence; it is just the most visible. Black people have been putting up with racist imagery for years because they didn't feel they could do anything about it. Now the change in public mood has emboldened them to question all such images. That is why it has also spread to statues and military bases and public place names. People are tired of having their faces rubbed in it. The objection to those images is to the glorification of the individuals they celebrate, who stood for values now rightly seen as repugnant. The Democratic party is something else entirely and Gohmert's action is nothing more than a petty obnoxious attempt to distract from the real issue.

Here are a couple of useful links for anyone who wants to know more.

So they only want to revise the bits of history that suit them? It’s the hypocritical double speak that this draws attention to and the fact that outlets are happy to make noise about similarly pathetic gestures that reflect badly on the right are silent about this. Just search Louis Gohmert + any of the MSM and see what the last thing they reported was.

I can almost guarantee the Orange One will mention it in the next couple of days.

Not sure what your point is here, or who 'they' and 'them' are. Who needs constant reminders of the civil war era? What purpose is served by celebrating those people? I don't know what Trump would see in them. After all, they lost and he has said he doesn't like losers.

It is very possible that Kamala Harris will become the first female president of the USA & maybe by this time next year. Joe Biden’s fitness for the job is being questioned by many Americans- some of whom think he’s showing signs of early dementia. And for the last two months the Tara Reade issue has been ignored by the media.

I think she will be okay as Vice President (and President, if it comes to it).

Joe Biden may be getting on but I reckon he would have a much better handle on the coronavirus crisis America currently has as opposed to Trump, who has (essentially) done nothing but complain.

Kamala is a strange pick, very polarizing choice.

At a time when Police protests are happening across the country - the worst anti-cop sentiment in recent history, they’ve selected a top cop - she was California Attorney General, policing the Police - she has a terrible record of not prosecuting killer cops, and hiding Evidence, until she was caught, that would’ve freed an innocent man serving life, she sent many many African Americans to jail for weed, while laughing about smoking it herself. She also has a pathetic record on cash bail and parole reform.

She had some memorable moments in the recent Dem primaries- attacking Biden several times about his racist voting record, and a pathetic low blow against fellow Dem primary contestant Tulsi Gabbard for appearing on Tucker Carlson/Fox News discussing ending America’s forever foreign wars (if you’ve never watched Tucker, quite often he’s the opposite of Fox - a populist)

She polled absolutely terribly in the primaries, pulling out at only around 3%
It’s a very crappy look when you cannot even win the Primary in your home state, let alone get 2nd or 3rd

The purpose of a VP is to shore up Presidential ticket, by rounding out the Presidents electoral weaknesses - just like Biden did for Obama, except I can't see how she will bring in any new voters, which is what the Dems need as this 2020 race is far from over

A Biden/Harris ticket is effectively republican because they are so moderate

If I ran the DNC establishment, and didn't care about the Massive corporate donations greasing my wheels of power:

President Bernie Sanders
VP Tulsi Gabbard

In a crazy stupid times in America with this pandemic, tens of milions losing their jobs, and lost health insurance tied to those jobs, there is no better time for Medicare-for-all

But despite Medicare-for-all having majority public support - 70/80% depending on the poll, we are not allowed to have the nice things. It's just impossible in "the greatest country in the world". That's what political donations from health insurance companies and their boards buys - Biden has even recently stated he would veto any M4A bill that arrived on his presidential desk. Pathetic

So who would you have chosen then @nathan ?

Also, bio: https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2020/08/11/kamala-harris-vp-background-bio-biden-running-mate-2020-393885

I started reading the bio, assuming it was a puff piece, only taking about positive things

I'm so glad they highlight #31 - blatant corruption that hides-in-plain-sight
Interestingly Mnuchin is, or was until recently a Democrat, but now licking our Dear Leader El Presidente's boots

"#31
The California Department of Justice recommended in 2012 that Harris file a civil enforcement action against OneWest Bank for “widespread misconduct” when foreclosing homes.

Harris, however, declined to prosecute the bank or its then-CEO Steven Mnuchin, who now serves as Treasury secretary."

Lots of angry red shouty headlines on Breitbart this morning, outlining every single bad thing Kamala has ever done...like Trump was some kind of a perfect saint or something.

The DNC doesn't choose the nominee. The democratic voters do in the primaries, just like they did in 2016. But there's certainly no shortage of conspiracy theorists on the left who refuse to believe that everything isn't rigged and that they're not different from Trump supporters.

I do like Bernie's vision but politically he made so many misteps. Over-promising that not just medicare but everything can be funded such as education. And yeah, you don't say positive things about Cuba and China. Context doesn't matter - you don't say good things about totalitarian states during a @#$%ing election in a place like America.
