Geektastic: Is anyone surprised?

Putin is a wolf in a world largely composed of sheep. He's going to take what he wants and the West will bleat and wring their hands but probably do nothing.

He has been leader for far far too long, and all countries should limit the amount of time leaders should retain power for. At some point he was going to go septic. Seems having power, and retain that power for a long period does something really bad to humans.

Its an autocratic nation. He gets "voted" in, so your good suggestion wont happen. Other countries cannot tell that country how to run themselves, but they have an opportunity to push for change, but that will not happen. Russia hasn't invaded, Putin has, so the World can allow that or not. I expect they will allow it

those who still don't understand that you can't trust some people, recall a few days ago Russia was telling the world they were carrying out peace keeping activity.

if people still have belief in some people, just don't believe some people

If you think Russia was sending out peace keeping forces to do peace keeping tasks, you were sorely mistaken. Putin is trying to repeat history. It's absolutely abhorrent.

Not that many, actually. I'm not sure if Russian troops have left Kazakhstan after the latest unrest, but the gas fields there are under Russian control anyway. Belorussia is fully under Russian control.

Then you have Azerbaijan with decent oil resources, and that's about it.

The Baltic states have no natural resources and can only be used as buffer from Nato. Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan have no oil reserves. Having said that, all the stans don't really value their independence and would happilly to join Russia except that they have nothing to bring to the table and Putin doesn't need more mouths to feed.

gzt: Explosions in Kiev during security council meeting. I hope some way can be found to stop this action and resume negotiations. This is very sad. It has potential to change the world in many ways that we cannot imagine at this time.

Yep, Russia, China, US and the West at odds.

I have heard only China's first statement at the security council prior to the events. It was a short statement and supported continued resolution efforts. This does not seem to be 'at odds'.

What they say, and what they mean/want are quite possible entirely different.

MikeB4: Russia isn't really doing much different to what the US, UK etc have done over recent decades. This is a further example of the stupidity of world leaders.

It's hard to disagree with this. That does not make it sensible.

MikeB4: The Ukraine president has declared Marshall law, I don't recall Great Britain, US, Australia, Aotearoa declaring Marshall law in WW1, WW2. I don't believe that the Ukraine regime is what they market themselves as.

Your last statement is consistent with Russia's UN security council diplomat describing Ukraine's government as a Junta. Your first point is incorrect. The USA declared martial law in Hawaii after the attack on Pearl Harbour.

The best speech in English by a long way at the UN Security Council. Delivered by Kenya's representative Martin Kimani. It would not surprise me if that was the best speech in any language:

Apparently it's been racking up views in edited forms.
