"Senator Lindsey Graham’s bipartisan overtures — on immigration, foreign policy, even investigations of President Trump — once made him a darling of Democrats, a Republican dealmaker to be wooed to the center.

But when the South Carolina Republican turned up in this St. Louis suburb to campaign against a Democratic colleague, Claire McCaskill, the crowd of Trump-loving women and red-hatted men practically swooned, bathing in the reflected glow of the president they adore — who now adores Lindsey Graham.

Mr. Graham, crisscrossing the country to turn out the Republican vote against the centrist Democratic senators who were once his natural allies, lapped it up. He has been basking in the exaltation of Trump backers ever since his lacerating defense of Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh. His own transformation from Trump-basher to Trump defender seems complete.

Gone is the senator who once called the future president “the world’s biggest jackass” and a “race-baiting xenophobic religious bigot.” With an eye toward re-election in 2020 in a state still on the Trump Train, Mr. Graham has climbed into the locomotive.

“I stepped up,” he boasted in an interview, “and I’m getting rewarded for it by conservatives, and liberals are all upset.”

Mr. Graham’s latest show of fealty came earlier this week, when he embraced the president’s legally dubious plan to end birthright citizenship for babies born to noncitizens — a head-spinning turn for a senator who once partnered with Democrats on comprehensive immigration legislation that included a pathway to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants. (Mr. Graham says he proposed ending birthright citizenship years ago.)

“The fall of Lindsey Graham into the dark Trumpian pit of demagoguery, division and incitement is complete,” Steve Schmidt, a former Republican strategist who has renounced the party, wrote on Twitter."

As he awaits sentencing, Trump’s former lawyer says that he wants to clear his conscience and warn voters about what he sees as the president’s true nature in advance of the midterm elections.

...During our conversation, Cohen recalled a discussion at Trump Tower, following the then-candidate’s return from a campaign rally during the 2016 election cycle. Cohen had watched the rally on TV and noticed that the crowd was largely Caucasian. He offered this observation to his boss. “I told Trump that the rally looked vanilla on television. Trump responded, ‘That’s because black people are too stupid to vote for me.’” (The White House did not respond to multiple requests for comment.)

This conversation, he noted, was reminiscent of an exchange that the two men had engaged in years earlier, after Nelson Mandela’s death. “[Trump] said to me, ‘Name one country run by a black person that’s not a sh1thole,’ and then he added, ‘Name one city,’” Cohen recalled, a statement that echoed the president’s alleged comments about African nations earlier this year. (White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders denied those comments at the time. She added that “no one here is going to pretend like the president is always politically correct—he isn’t.” She subsequently noted that it was “one of the reasons the American people love him.”)

Cohen also recounted a conversation he had with Trump in the late 2000s, while they were traveling to Chicago for a Trump International Hotel board meeting. “We were going from the airport to the hotel, and we drove through what looked like a rougher neighborhood. Trump made a comment to me, saying that only the blacks could live like this.” After the first few seasons of The Apprentice, Cohen recalled how he and Trump were discussing the reality show and past season winners. The conversation wended its way back to the show’s first season, which ended in a head-to-head between two contestants, Bill Rancic and Kwame Jackson. “Trump was explaining his back-and-forth about not picking Jackson,” an African-American investment manager who had graduated from Harvard Business School. “He said, ‘There’s no way I can let this black f-g win.’”...

The many ways that the president, his family and his aides are lining their own pockets.

They don’t even try very hard to hide it.
President Trump, his family and more than a few of his appointees are using his presidency to enrich themselves.
They are spending taxpayer dollars for their own benefit.
They are accepting sweetheart deals from foreigners.
And they are harnessing the power of the federal government on behalf of their businesses.

There’s a word for this: corruption.

Given how widespread Trumpian corruption has become, we thought it was time to make a list.

It’s meant to be a definitive list of self-dealing by the president, his family, his staff or his friends - since he began running for president.
To qualify, an incident needs to seem highly credible, even if it remains unresolved, and needs to involve making money.

Here’s the list, sorted into thematic categories:

America's Founding Fathers had no way of predicting mass communication, let alone the damaging effects of its influence and misuse. They certainly couldn't have foreseen a population of 340 million owning an average of one weapon apiece, or bombs capable of destroying all life on Earth being controlled by people of dubious mental capacity.

Change the electoral system to better reflect the will of the people. Trump is the fifth person to become an American President in spite of the voters' wishes.

Make voting compulsory.

Government-fund Presidential electoral campaigns to ensure that wealthy candidates have no advantage over any other.

Compulsorily screen Presidential (and possibly Gubernatorial) candidates by an independent panel of reputable and non-partisan psychologists, and invite sworn testimonials from any member of the public with provable knowledge of the candidates' history and behavior, to better assess their fitness, or lack thereof, for office.

Give all of the world's stable democracies a say in the American presidential elections. This voting bloc could be accorded perhaps 10% of the total vote, and be separately allocated to participating countries by percentage of population. What happens in the United States now affects the entire world, so it's no longer safe to leave the election of a US President solely in the hands of US citizens.

Legislate to make lying an offense. A misdemeanor for the populace, but a crime for anyone in public office.

How specifically would you re-write the constitution? what changes would you make?

The electoral college is a relic from a time when getting a message from one state to another took days rather than fractions of a second. It does need to be changed, but at the same time you need to avoid having the voters in the less populous states being ignored over the votes from New York city.

Compulsory voting would just lead to people voting for a rubbish candidate. Better would be to remove barriers to voting. First thing I would do is declare the election day a public holiday. It could be called Democracy Day an be a celebration of democracy etc. Have block parties with free food if you voted. Stop the purging of minorities from the electoral rolls. Ensure adequate voting facilities in all districts.

How would you hand out the funds for the campaigns? Could anyone run as an independent and get the same funding?

Good luck finding a group to be seen as independent for such a task, and the value of corrupting such a group would be so high, imagine if you could stack it with your own people and declare anyone against you as being crazy. Who is to decide what is unbiased?

I often felt there could be almost a portion in the electoral college for non-citizens given the President is called the leader of the free world, maybe others in the free world should get some say. E.G equivalent to a state with 5(?) electoral college votes. But no nation will give up their sovereignty and let outsiders vote for their leader like that. also who would decide which countries would count? Would South Korea be considered a stable democracy considering their previous premier was removed from office and put in jail? How about Australia? Russia?

Would lying be an offense in all circumstances? Blaming the dog when you fart? Or just in certain cases like now where perjury exists for sworn testimony? Could you expand perjury to include official statements made in office or on a campaign?

I was about to comment that no sovereign nation would allow outside influence, but then I remembered the EU.
Would the democracies in Canada and Mexico get the biggest say since they are right next door?
God forbid that the United Nations get in on the act.
Australia is a 'stable democracy' where voting is compulsory. That seems to work well.

The only aspirational goal from geekIT's post I would really like to see as an outsider is one person one vote, all of equal value. Absolute majority decides. But we don't even have that in our little South Pacific paradise (due to overhangs, cosy deals, etc).

The electoral college thing is also an anathema, but doesn't each state, however large or small, provide two senators? Thereby giving small states power out of proportion to their population?

Everyone here will know how I feel about Donald Trump. I have no regard whatsoever for his intelligence or capabilities. Like many, I see his Twitter fumblings and vague verbal ramblings as hopeful signs of incipient dementia. Sometimes I wonder if he even knows where he is.

Yet there seems to be a different Donald Trump on the campaign trail. As much as I hate to admit it, he comes across in his rallies as energetic and focussed. His manner is forceful and his delivery precise. There is no hesitation or digression at all. He knows exactly what he is saying and he says it very well. It is like they have found a younger clone for him.

Has anyone else noticed this? Trump is maintaining a pretty gruelling schedule yet it seems to be having little effect on him. Has he sold his soul to the devil? Is he sucking up the thumos of his audiences? Maybe, in this moment of need, he is finally lifting a little of the carefully-concealed lid on his true self?

That was on purpose, specifically to ensure an idiot like Trump would not be elected. What they failed to forsee was that the electors would end up dogmatically following party lines rather than voting with their heads. Or even that the electors themselves could be just as blinded by a lying demagogue as Joe Average.

He has turned - in the short term at least - from a lazy lying sleaze-bag into a hard-working con-man fighting for his survival.

He is even more dangerous than usual.

I don't see signs of dementia or any disability in persons as hopeful. I don't see Donald Trump today being any different to Donald Trump of two years ago.
