I have been trying to figure out how I feel about this result. I am relieved that the Trump forces lost control of the House. I am disappointed that they gained in the Senate and elsewhere. I went to bed last night feeling depressed and let down.

 

One thing that struck me was how close many of the results were, and still are. With few exceptions, most of the contests seem to have a margin of only one or two per cent. This means the country, or least those who vote, is almost exactly evenly divided.

 

This is no repudiation of Trump and his style of doing things. It means that half the USA sees nothing wrong with his lies, greed, insults, dishonesty, manipulations, racism, hate speech, fascism. They continue to celebrate this evil abomination of a human being.

 

I believe in democracy. This is the democratic verdict and I believe it must be respected. But I find it profoundly depressing. I find it depressing because many of the elections could have easily gone the other way, and if they had, half of the country would still feel the way I do.

While it was a Trump referendum and that showed, the non Trump fans that are Republicans will still vote Republican. Democrats turned out and evened things up. I'd like to know the popular vote blue vs red

Like @MikeB4 I was expecting the Republicans to hold both the House and Senate. So I am pleased that the Democrats won the House, but still little saddened that the "blue wave" didn't happen (even though I didn't think it would).

 

If the Democrats had managed to take the Senate as well that would be a cause for real celebration.

 

The Democrats need to rally behind a charismatic leader. This is something they should have been doing ever since their loss in 2016, but they still seem like a leaderless party. They need someone young and progressive that women and people of colour can really get behind, but that person probably also needs to be a white male to have any chance at getting the right-leaning swing votes.

 

Over the past two years we have learned that the USA is not nearly as progressive and forward thinking as much of the rest of the world. Perhaps it is going to be a necessity that a new era needs to be ushered in by someone who the right-leaning voters see as "one of them".

 

I personally thought Obama could have been a great President, but was hamstrung by a Republican House and Senate. And I think much of America just wasn't ready for a black president.

 

An imperfect solution to spreading a progressive message may well be to make the messenger more appealing to those who need convincing.

This means that not only were the elections close, but they were also a good reflection of where most voters are really at. In other words, half of America does not see a problem with Donald Trump. I find that extremely regrettable.

Many GOP members see a problem with him, and I am sure many Republican voters do as well, but they have to stay Republican, IMHO

But ... WHY!!?? This does not make sense to me. At all. But then again I say that as someone who has voted for both the right and left ends of the spectrum at various times for various reasons, so the idea of 'changing my mind' is something I can at least imagine.

Same here. But if you always vote National or Labour or Democrat or Republican (as the majority of people do) they will grump about Trump but still vote Republican. Maybe more so if they feel there will be a Democrat push going on

Why does that rule him out as a presidential candidate? Not being previously elected didn't stop Trump with the Republicans.
