Umm...somebody better check my figures.

With the cost of the wall at 18bil, and the population of the US at say, 327mil, that's fifty-five bucks a head, man, woman and child.

If I was a US citizen (and thank Gawd I'm not) I'd be bitching to my congressman about that. Especially if I lived in Hawaii or Alaska.

I think they spend one trillion dollars on defense... In that sense 18 billion is not very much?

The New York Times - Shutdown to Take Effect at Midnight as Talks Fail to Break Impasse

Dec. 21, 2018

WASHINGTON — The federal government headed toward a partial shutdown late Friday as the House and the Senate both adjourned for the evening, ending any hopes of a last-minute compromise to pass a spending bill that would keep nine cabinet agencies operating past a deadline of midnight.

In the absence of a deal, the capital prepared itself for a shutdown that would affect nine federal departments and several other agencies, including hundreds of thousands of federal employees.

The New York Times - Trump Policy Gyrations Threaten Fragile Republican Coalition

Dec. 21, 2018

WASHINGTON — President Trump’s near-simultaneous decisions this week to force a government shutdown over his demand to fund a border wall and withdraw American troops from Syria and Afghanistan have imperiled the fragile Republican coalition, exacerbating the party’s fears about what may become of his presidency - and its own electoral prospects in 2020.

And by disregarding the counsel of seasoned advisers, Mr. Trump demonstrated that he does not grasp how damaging his impulsive behavior was to his party in last month’s elections, when his party lost 40 seats in the House, senior Republicans said Friday.

Choosing to shut down the government after conservative media personalities belittled him for caving on his demand for border funding, the president proved that he remains more fixated on pleasing his base than winning back moderate voters he has alienated.

Third Govt shutdown in a year. There needs to be a move away from the US, where a new World Bank is created to become the financial epicentre of commerce. This is beyond farcical. The US wants to be alone and selfish, make it happen. Some responsible Govts can also discuss Syria and Afghanistan, and so on

Third Govt shutdown in a year. ...

In effect the US Government has been shut down for two years, without an effective President or good quality Whitehouse staff.

The Washington Post - ‘He takes no ownership - that’s just Trump’: President eschews responsibility for a shutdown he once craved

It took the president just 10 days this month to remove his name from something he once proudly owned but wasn’t going great - the federal government shutdown.

After threatening a shutdown for months over border wall funding and vowing last week that he would “take the mantle” of responsibility, Trump tried to shift the blame Friday, just hours before a government funding bill expired at midnight.

“The Democrats now own the shutdown!” he wrote on Twitter. ...

“It’s really indicative of how we all know he thinks so in-the-moment and so off-the-cuff that it winds up being dangerous,” said Jack O’Donnell, former president of the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino, one of the properties from which Trump removed his name.

“The whole idea of once things are going wrong, he takes no ownership - that’s just Trump,” O’Donnell added.

“He does not own anything that goes wrong. The problem is, he’ll blame anybody. Obviously, it’s the Democrats in this situation.”

MSNBC - Exposed: Hypocrisy in Trump's shutdown threat

The Government [has] shut down because President Trump wants to look “strong on immigration”.

A careful study of Trump’s own history reveals a stunning level of hypocrisy on the issue of foreign workers.

New reporting reveals Trump has a decades-long history of privately hiring undocumented and foreign workers and under Trump and a Republican Congress, a visa program to hire foreign workers has been expanded, after which Trump properties requested to hire 76 more foreign workers.

ABC News - US envoy to anti-IS coalition Brett McGurk quits over Donald Trump's withdrawal from Syria

The US envoy to the global coalition fighting the Islamic State group has resigned in protest over Donald Trump's abrupt decision to withdraw US troops from Syria, joining Defence Secretary Jim Mattis in an administration exodus of experienced national security figures.

Key points:

  1. Mr McGurk was due to leave in mid-February but moved his exit forward to December 31
  2. He said in his resignation letter that IS fighters were on the run, but not defeated
  3. Mr Trump maintains the IS group is largely defeated

Trump calls aides 'f****** idiots' as presidency risks spinning out of control

Convinced that people around him are fools, president increasingly suspicious they are secretly undermining him.

At the midpoint of his term, Mr Trump has grown more sure of his own judgment and more cut off from anyone else’s than at any point since taking office.

He spends ever more time in front of a television, often retreating to his residence out of concern that he is being watched too closely.

As he sheds advisers at a head-spinning rate, he reaches out to old associates, complaining that few of the people around him were there at the beginning.

Mr Trump is said by advisers to be consumed by the multiplying investigations that have taken down his personal lawyer, campaign chairman, national security adviser and family foundation.

He rails against enemies, who often were once friends, nursing a deep sense of betrayal and grievance as they turn on him.

Trump has never been more dangerous than he is now.   frown

I believe Trump is not responsible for starting the Chinese-America friction, but is the worst possible person to be President during the conflict.
