The Washington Post - The 10 worst things Trump did in 2018

10. His comment about “sh--hole” countries blew up negotiations for a deal that would have given Trump his border wall.

09. His offensive tweets continued to undermine his presidency.

08. His misuse of power turned critics into martyrs.

07. He drove away suburban voters and caused the GOP to lose control of the House.

06. His graceless handling of Sen. John McCain’s funeral was a new low.

05. His handling of Jamal Khashoggi’s murder harmed America’s moral standing.

04. His news conference with Vladimir Putin in Helsinki was an embarrassment.

03. His policy to separate migrant children from their families at the southern border was an avoidable tragedy.

02. His planned withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan is a gift to the Taliban and al-Qaeda.

01. His pullout of all U.S. troops in Syria will take America’s boot off of the terrorists’ necks.

The Washington Post - A defensive Trump calls a Cabinet meeting and uses it to boast, deflect and distract

January 2 at 8:13 PM

Business as usual ...   undecided

President Trump, 12 days into a government shutdown and facing new scrutiny from emboldened Democrats, inaugurated the new year Wednesday with a Cabinet meeting.

It quickly became a 95-minute stream-of-consciousness defense of his presidency and worldview, filled with falsehoods, revisionist history and self-aggrandizement. ...

Democrats to ask for 10 years of presidential tax returns in new bill

By Lauren Fox, CNN

Democrats are making presidential tax returns a focal point in one of their first pieces of legislation, an effort to build the case to the American people that time is up on President Donald Trump keeping his own tax returns from the public, shutting what could be a window into his personal wealth.

According to two sources familiar with the discussions, Democrats will include a provision in their new bill that would require presidential nominees to disclose 10 years of tax returns shortly after they become the nominee. Vice presidents would also be required to disclose a decade of returns. The tax returns would then be posted on the Federal Election Commission's website for public viewing.

The 10-year requirement is new marker. At the end of last year, Democrats had disclosed H.R. 1 would require presidential candidates to release just three years of tax returns, but a source familiar with the process said that after reviewing precedent, the marker was moved to a decade of returns.

The provision would be included in H.R. 1, a far-reaching bill that makes sweeping ethics changes as well as lays out Democratic priorities on voting rights and health care. The legislation isn't expected to pass the Republican-controlled Senate or be signed by Trump, also a Republican. However, it will give committees an opportunity to set markers on Democratic priorities in the new Congress.

CNN Politics - Tomorrow is the day Donald Trump's presidency totally changes

Washington (CNN)    Donald Trump may not realize it totally yet, but today was the last easy-ish day of his presidency. ...

Starting tomorrow, Democrats in the House will make Trump's life a living hell. ...

Trump, a political neophyte prior to the 2016 race, has never had to deal with this sort of opposition before. ...

Democrats can now do Trump real political damage using the official means of their House majority. ...

Trump claims to understand this, with his self-professed titanic intellect. ...

Romney lining up to go against Trump in 2020

It's good to see the potential Republican presidential candidates trying to outcompete each other about who can sound least like Trump for the win.

I feel its a foregone conclusion that Romney will get the nomination. Many Republican senators do not like Trump, they see what he is doing, but they want Republicans to be in power, so they replace Trump with someone who is known, normal, and NOT Trump. As well as avoiding voter abandonment, Romney will favour the rust belt even if its just words, we will continue what Trump started but do it properly and so on. He cannot lose.

For the nomination we might guess there is a small % of senators who want Trump out. I suspect the vast majority do. I suspect his closest supporters do as well. When all this falls into place, Trump will withdraw his bid due to [fake] health issues "If it wasn't for this, I'd win easy, I would, we all know that."

The Washington Post - GOP senator calls for Trump to reopen government; Trump tweets ‘The Wall is Coming’

03 Jan 2019 at 5:20 pm

On Thursday evening Trump posted a photo of himself on his official Instagram account along with the words, “The Wall is Coming.”

The post was a reference to the phrase “Winter is Coming” from the television show “Game of Thrones.”

At a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Trump displayed a similar poster with the words, “Sanctions are Coming,” in reference to tightening U.S. policy toward Iran.

The comb-like object at the bottom is presumably the new slat design for The Great Wall.

You haven't missed anything, he did say that. It places him as just another senator, who will agree with Trump, or disagree. So 100% well positioned to be "normal" Agree with GOP, disagree with Trump if needed, so as to to keep onside of normality, stability and honour. That will be his base for 2020, you wait and see. He wont need to fight Trump, he just needs to establish himself as the obvious choice when Trump implodes. Easiest job application ever.

The Washington Post - If we’re going to waste billions on a wall, let those billions be Trump’s

President Trump wants a wall. Democratic lawmakers don’t want to pay for it.

Here’s an elegant compromise: If Trump truly thinks building a wall is such a brilliant idea, he should pay for it himself.

I’m actually not the first to propose this.

Last week, Rep. Walter B. Jones (R-N.C.) suggested that our builder in chief pledge “some of his own funds” toward the wall, though Jones emphasized that a fiscally responsible approach would primarily rely on offsetting cuts to “wasteful federal spending.”

Now, saying you’re going to pay for a border wall by eliminating “wasteful federal spending” is a bit of an oxymoron.

The wall, after all, is a non-solution to a non-crisis. ...

If Trump believes that he - rather than the taxpaying public - is on the hook for construction costs, he might just declare the thing already built.

He can instruct Fox News to air some B-roll of the Great Wall of China and hope his supporters don’t notice the difference, and we can all, at long last, move on to the next fake crisis.
