Trump has turned out to be a senescent has-been whose delusions are propped up by obsequious retainers.

 

From his fantasy world in the White House, he barks dictatorial and often illegal orders, floats conspiracy theories, tweets insults and lies unceasingly.

 

But much of the time he’s not fully in charge.

 

He has the instincts of a fascist but lacks both the discipline and the loyal lieutenants he’d need to create true autocracy.

 

That doesn’t mean, however, that the country isn’t coming undone.

 

Trump’s bumbling incoherence, coupled with his declining political fortunes since the midterms, makes him seem less frightening than he once did.

 

But, two years in, the jaded weariness many of us have developed might obscure how bad things are.

 

We’re living through an unprecedented breakdown in America’s ability to function like a normal country.

 

The shutdown throws our crisis into high relief.

 

For the first two years, Trump destroyed American norms, standards and conventions.

 

Now he’s cavalierly destroying American lives. ...

For someone who has been surrounded by money all of his life, Trump is surprisingly vulgar and low-class. He wants to be like Macron and have Bastille Day parades but he is utterly devoid of any sense of style. No French president would ever dream of serving McDonalds for any occasion in the presidential palace.

2. The staff are not here as he has a hissy fit over his precious wall

3. He will spend 8 nanoseconds congratulating them for their sporting achievements, and 3 hours blaming everyone else. At the same time 800,000 garage sales are golng online so they can buy bread tomorrow.

Trump won't budge. He wants Dems to negotiate even though he will not negotiate. The emergency option will go to court with no wall action. DEMs have no reason to fold, they are actually open to negotiation. The public see Trump as at fault, which means DEMs can continue. 

Wall aside, Trump sees hurting 800,000 employees as well as MANY support businesses as ok. 

He could re open Govt and argue for two years re the wall, but he wont it seems.

There is no consensus.

The Democrats won't budge because they are not stupid, and they know that the wall is only a vanity project.

They also know that if they give in to Trump once, he will use the same blackmail tactics again, and again ...

Sorry, I was meaning here. What is the consensus here as to how far the shutdown will go? Right now its an inconvenience for many, a time without pay for 800,000, and these have happened before. BUT, this is Trump. He could hang on for months. He could open the Govt and start negotiating for his wall, knowing dull well they wont advance that type of funding. DEMs could agree to commence a study of the wall, get costs and timeframes layed out with a view to assessing it once that has been done. Knowing full well that this in itself would take a year. Basically string him along.

WASHINGTON - A federal judge blocked the Commerce Department from adding a question on American citizenship to the 2020 census, handing a legal victory on Tuesday to critics who accused the Trump administration of trying to turn the census into a tool to advance Republican political fortunes*.

 

The ruling marks the opening round in a legal battle with potentially profound ramifications for federal policy and for politics at all levels, one that seems certain to reach the Supreme Court before the printing of census forms begins this summer.

 

In a lengthy and stinging opinion, Judge Jesse M. Furman of the United States District Court in Manhattan said that Wilbur L. Ross Jr., the commerce secretary, broke “a veritable smorgasbord” of federal rules when he ordered the citizenship question added to the census nearly a year ago. ...

 

* Because noncitizens tend to live in places that disproportionately vote Democratic, undercounting them in the census would most likely shift federal spending and political power to Republican areas.

Well one Positive thing I suppose from the shutting down is that he is not majorly screwing up anything else!
