Well one Positive thing I suppose from the shutting down is that he is not majorly screwing up anything else!

To be fair, most of his screwing up has been mouth based. He hasn't actually done much, just mouthing off. Things like leaving the Paros Accord and other natters will be reversed when he's thrown out in 2020. In the meantime, his people can continue to pay the tariffs from their pay check, which is in effect a transfer from the masses to the Government coffers.

Probably some in China don't feel that way China December trade data released. Exports down. Imports down. That will be very significant for some areas. Likewise the shutdown affecting many American families.

His tariffs have been a major own goal, with federal assistance packages required to bail out affected industries such as soy farmers. And compound that with the Government shutdown, which means this assistance can't be accessed.

I didn't say he hasn't done anything. He has been there two years with a raft of things he will do, and largely its been talk. Removal from some agreements they will be reversed. Trade tariffs will be reversed. The shutdown is recent, it cannot last too long. There is the muslim ban, gone. There is the families at the border, gone. There is the wall, never started, has not been planned, will not happen. Meeting with KJU, waste of time, nothing happened. We do have the removal from Syria, but as usual, the military have stated they will move out unless there is an issue, another Trump easy out to avoid a fail.

In the early days it was WW3. Two years down the track his rifle is firing plastic bullets

The New York Times - Pelosi Asks Trump to Reschedule State of the Union Amid Shutdown

Jan. 16, 2019

WASHINGTON - Speaker Nancy Pelosi, citing security constraints from the partial government shutdown, asked President Trump on Wednesday to scrap his Jan. 29 State of the Union address, and a bipartisan group of senators called on him to reopen the government while they negotiated a compromise on border security.

“Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government reopens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has reopened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on Jan. 29,” Ms. Pelosi said in a letter to Mr. Trump on Wednesday.

She suggested he forgo the annual presidential ritual of addressing a joint session of Congress in a televised speech during prime time and submit a written message instead.

While she couched her request in logistical concerns, Ms. Pelosi’s proposal served as a reminder to Mr. Trump that, with Democrats in control of the House, she has the power to frustrate his agenda and upend his plans amid a prolonged stalemate over his demands for a wall on the southwestern border. ...

EDIT :

Here is the full text of Pulosi's letter:

Dear Mr. President:

On January 3rd, it was my privilege as Speaker to invite you to deliver the State of the Union address on January 29. The Constitution calls for the President to “from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union.” During the 19th Century and up until the presidency of Woodrow Wilson, these annual State of the Union messages were delivered to Congress in writing. And since the start of modern budgeting in Fiscal Year 1977, a State of the Union address has never been delivered during a government shutdown.

In September 2018, Secretary Nielsen designated State of the Union Addresses as National Special Security Events (NSSEs), recognizing the need for “the full resources of the Federal Government to be brought to bear” to ensure the security of these events. The extraordinary demands presented by NSSEs require weeks of detailed planning with dozens of agencies working together to prepare for the safety of all participants.

The U.S. Secret Service was designated as the lead federal agency responsible for coordinating, planning, exercising, and implementing security for National Special Security Events by Public Law 106-544, December 19, 2000. However, both the U.S. Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security have not been funded for 26 days now - with critical departments hamstrung by furloughs.

Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29th.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

NANCY PELOSI
Speaker of the House

Pelosi Asks Trump to Reschedule State of the Union Amid Shutdown

Wow, who'd have thunk that Nancy, with decades of political expertise and someone who is an actual expert would be able to outmaneuver a neophyte, with an over-inflated belief in his own expertise.

The "Dunning/Kruger effect" should be called the easier to remember "Trump effect"

In Trump's credit (hurts to type that) he has locked himself in, so Pelosi isn't really outmanoeuvring him, he has done that himself. Otherwise she has acted brilliantly. Stable, level headed, offering negotiation, and her letter to delay the state of the Union address is masterful. You can fight and argue with a narcissist, but when you don't get angry and are calm, that hurts them.

She holds all the cards, Trump threw his away.

USA Today -  5 reasons Trump may want a shutdown that have nothing to do with a wall

Clearly, Trump must enjoy having a big chunk of our government closed.

Besides a border wall fight, what else is he getting out of this mess? A lot.

  1. Conservatives get to pretend smaller government works.
  2. More quo for Putin’s quid. (pleasing Putin is obviously a crucial goal)
  3. Running the government like a failing Trump casino
  4. He gets to prove how smart Mexico is.
  5. He gets someone to blame for his tax cuts not working.

... It’s times like these when it would be nice to have a president who actually works for the United States of America.

USA Today is middle-of-the-road, no controversy media. If it were an ice cream flavor, it'd be vanilla.

It's often favored as free newspapers in US chain hotels, because even in Texas and Kansas it's never controversial.

So it's a bit shocking for it to say that Trump wants to please Putin.

It is an obvious statement, but many conservative will believe it's untrue until Trump is led away in handcuffs for treason.
