I agree that a lot of money funded NZF, thereby limiting other spending. Im not sure we can afford to do everything and have tax cuts. If we maintain current taxation, get everything into gear to improve what is lacking, whether that be health or education, transport, infrastructure, AND we have a standard surplus every year, then we can cut taxes, as they would actually be a result of over taxation.

The way you increase the tax take is by using funding to remove productivity constraints - usually that is by building infrastructure. However the public sector is a massive handbrake in this regard. Look at the drag on the CRL getting approved, Waterview was late, Transmission Gully is now going to be a year behind. That's before you even look at the infrastructure and housing we were meant to be getting this term, almost none of which is happening unless it's funded by the PGF, which ironically has too little oversight.

There's just no consequences for the public sector. Who cares if something is delivered years later than it was meant to be delivered. No one's going to lose their jobs, right?

Wrong, people loose there jobs all the time in the public sector.

But tell us about all the cost over runs, time delays, financial both ups in the private sector , they are equally impressive.

Why should I? My point is about the issues in the public sector. In fact, there seem to be some ministries who aren't performing any of their key functions.

@GV27  "In fact, there seem to be some ministries who aren't performing any of their key functions."  What ministries would those be?

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I think he's looking at KB, Twyford, AKL congestion, etc. You can also look at other sectors in this and the previous and the previous Govts. My previous post explains why NZ will always be like this unless we change

Unfortunately NZers are too determined to dress being moderately inconvenienced in the short term for long-term prosperity as some sort of massive human rights infraction and equate themselves with oppressed minorities in tyrannical countries over the slightest thing.

The result is a series of short-term band-aid fixes which, through ineffective planning and no accountability on delivery, end up taking just as long and costing just as much as the better long-term option.

This is in our DNA and nothing short of another 1984 economic reset will do the trick. Until then, everyone can just keep accepting mediocrity and nothing will ever change. The only people who wear it will be the people who are actually struggling.

I still haven't seen an answer regarding this ""In fact, there seem to be some ministries who aren't performing any of their key functions." "

Can you give examples of what you are stating in the bold text above?

NZTA being incapable of maintaining the integrity of the WOF system springs to mind. That's before you get into the appalling handling of business cases and the oft-delayed-without-explanation-or-consequence delivery of projects like Waterview (months late), Transmission Gully (likely to be years late).

IRD has had such a high turnover of staff that they took investigators off cases and had them manning the phones for months.

Te Atatu residents killed the previously mooted North Western Busway years ago, which is only just now being reconsidered (supposedly a decision due this week).

The unitary plan agitations that sees central areas with frequent transport links able to fend off any intensification in their neighbourhoods.

The on-going saga of Eden Park, a sports ground that has been there for a hundred years, possibly being yeeted out of existence because some residents object to a national stadium being used for national stadium-type things, and in the process handing ratepayers a billion dollar bill for an alternative.

We are experts at being drama queens and our country is poorer for it.

Sorry but that does not give support to your sweeping statement that "ministries who aren't performing any of their key functions"

This show more of emotive over exaggeration on your behalf as opposed to evidence of folks claiming  "massive human rights infraction and equate themselves with oppressed minorities in tyrannical countries over the slightest thing"

Oh I guess the WOF system and transport infrastructure aren't actually that important then. Great, let's disband NZTA and save ourselves a bunch of cash.

You quoted three items which you considered in your opinion to be key functions. The quoted agencies have many KPIs and key deliverables to the government. How does three equal all their key functions not being performed.
