...and therein lies the dilemma. You need to immigrants to help pay for the infrastructure, but you need the infrastructure in place before they get here to avoid what happened in Auckland.

Again, exactly. NZ is analogous to a low income family. Like to have a heat pump to save money, and this or that to save money, but the CAPEX isnt there for everything. So we do one thing, thats a problem as what about the rest?? Vote whoever out.

We already got the migration though. That doesn't change a fundamental inability to actually build the infrastructure to support it.

There's zero reason to think or believe that this might or will change in the future, and I think the people of Auckland probably want to see the rapid transit and all the other things they were promised they'd have already before they agree to do the heavy lifting for population growth for the rest of the country.

From what I gather, those are off the table. An issue is lag. Chicken and the egg, but we cannot afford to outlay gazillions if they won't/may not come. If they come we are short changed that infrastructure. Then, we are slack, they won't come. We could have a Think Big project but that went belly up. In modern day times (excluding Covid) a  Think Big could well be an option, but we are small and relatively poor. No, we are not poor, but to expand from 5 million to 10 million infrastructure needs, there is no money.

To be fair I don't think it's just a Labour issue though, people in politics seem to quickly forget the value of a dollar if it's public money.

Make an election term 8 years, then people in politics can get things done instead of buying votes for the last 18 months.. Hoping that the 8 year incumbent can actually do stuff.

Labour has held the majority of power for the first time in at least 30 years and have done nothing with it. 5 more years of talk... no thanks

There's enough to fund sensible projects like surface Light Rail and active bridges across the harbour.

There isn't enough for empire-building projects like tunneled light rail serving a narrow part of Auckland and tunnels under the harbour costing tens of billions of dollars.

Yet we're only given one of these options once these projects go through the Wellington make-work scheme that is our public service. And we miss out on the stuff that our current population levels need, because we're trying to plan for a gold plated solution that might meet our needs in 50 years time. And in the meantime, nothing happens.

Whilst we are talking about wasting money... I see Robertson has raided the Covid fund again.

The Government has tapped some $70m of Covid Response and Recovery money to bolster the dwindling coffers of its Three Waters Reform Programme, including the purchase of ongoing policy and communications work, much of it done by consultants.

That is despite an earlier promise by Finance Minister Grant Robertson to focus the Covid-19 Response and Recovery Fund specifically on meeting the direct costs of responding to Covid-19 and the economic recovery from it.

This is the most important thing about this raid to be honest.

Why has 3 Waters run out of money? Did they not do a budget? Not make contingencies? 70M is quite a operational overspend.

Considering 3 waters is still only in the planning stages how much more will be wasted?

Well, it's not necessarily wasted (some will surely have been). Having said that, it's almost going to be due to a lack of proper scoping or planning. It may have been required anyway, but why didn't someone know. They have certainly spent a lot to date and it should probably have been captured and planned for in that.

I have less of a problem in a situation where a cost was not calculated for but was totally necessary and had costings been done correctly, then it would have been required regardless. One time or perhaps in a project this size, a couple of so times.

Where I'd be unhappy, is if it's due to poor management or planning that the tax payer has bourne significant additional costs. On a project this size, it's fairly inevitable, but again, it shouldn't be the normal.

For those who still maintain Mallard deserves a cushy diplomatic position despite being the opposite of diplomatic throughout his career, he is the gift that keeps on giving.

Long standing politicans usually retire to nice positions I guess, and yes, it happens on both sides, but this guy has made a number of serious missteps throughout his career, and if not protected by the PM, would have cost him his job multiple times and he would have left in disgrace.

Just add it to the taxpayer tab thanks Trev... It can go along with the $330,000 the taxpayer had to fork out when Mallard falsely accused someone of Rape
