The Washington Post - Trump and GOP target ‘pencil-neck’ Adam Schiff as their post-Mueller villain

On television, in Congress and before a crowd of thousands, President Trump and Republicans are mounting a ferocious revenge campaign against one Democrat - Rep. Adam B. Schiff.
Moments after taking the stage at a Michigan campaign rally Thursday night, Trump mocked the California lawmaker as “little pencil-neck Adam Schiff.”
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) compared Schiff to communist scaremonger Joseph McCarthy.
And House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) used a colloquy on the House floor to press Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) to remove Schiff as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.
“There has to be accountability, because it’s all lies,” Trump said to a crowd booing the mention of Schiff’s name. “And they know it’s lies - they know it.” ...
Mueller had been Trump’s villain for nearly two years, with the president lashing out at the “conflicted prosecutor” and his “angry Dems” investigators engaged in a “phony witch hunt.”
Now, with Attorney General William P. Barr’s four-page summary of Mueller’s report indicating no conclusion of a criminal conspiracy, Trump and Republicans have a new target for their vitriol. ...

For a week, criticism rained down on Attorney General William P. Barr. Why did his letter advising Congress of the end of the probe contain his own opinion on obstruction of justice? Why did he not lay out basic information such as the size of the report from special counsel Robert S. Mueller III?
On Friday, Barr seemed to concede that his critics had a point. A new letter was sent to Congress, a sign either that the criticism had personally stung or that Barr worried, once released, the actual report would demonstrate his initial letter was nothing more than political spin to defend his boss. ...
Barr’s [second] letter aimed to reassure lawmakers and the public that the process for handling the report - which numbers nearly 400 pages, he said - would be aboveboard and fair. ...
On its face, the new Barr letter insisting the first Barr letter was not a summary at all will strike many Americans as disingenuous.
If it wasn’t a summary, why did he not speak up for an entire week as the president and media declared it as such, and blurred the difference between Mueller’s actual report and Barr’s spin? ...
The letter also raises concerns that Barr will never supply the full report, identifying four categories of redactions he intends to make, including those to protect grand jury testimony. ...
Whatever the temporary political benefits to him and his boss, Barr has permanently stained his reputation and politicized the Justice Department. He adds his name to a long list of people who have tossed away their credibility to protect the most unfit president in history.

Overreach and overkill are two of the most common errors in politics.
A week after the release of Attorney General William P. Barr’s gloss on special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s report, it’s clear that President Trump’s characteristic response - to lash out at enemies and entangle his party in his obsessions - has prevented Republicans from using the end of the special counsel’s investigation as a pivot point.
It’s also obvious that Democratic presidential hopefuls, like the party’s House candidates in 2018, are largely ignoring the noise around the Russia scandal.
Instead, they’re piling up rafts of proposals on close-to-home subjects: education, child care, infrastructure and economics.
They are talking to the voters who will decide the 2020 election in a way Trump isn’t.
By now, no one ever expects Trump to be gracious.
But his inability just to declare victory and move on after Barr’s favorable summary of Mueller’s findings has frozen public opinion where it was before the latest news.
This is not good for the GOP. ...
