gzt:
networkn: The hits keep coming on what looks increasingly poorly thought out 3 waters plan. Cabinet will now meet (again) after fundamental constitutional issues were raised!

I believe you're referring to a provision which required a 60% vote in parliament in the event a future government proposes to sell water assets to a private sector entity.

Which is almost certainly unconstitutional and now we find out this afternoon, they were specifically warned about it a YEAR ago.

The fog cannon initiative is a response to the recent robbery in Sandringham and the subsequent death of a retail worker. That aspect of the initiative is not intended to mitigate ram raids. It expands on two previous fog cannon initiatives one of which was started by a National government that this particular dairy did not qualify under.

It's not particularly about ram raids, though many dairies I have been past in the last few months have clearly been ram-raided. It's more about the ongoing reactive nature of the Government, that it's only a big problem when people are getting killed. It was obviously just a matter of time.

There wasn't a cost of living crisis until people started screaming about it.

Fog Cannon's = ambulance at the bottom of the cliff.

Rather than address the youth crime issue lets try throw some money at the problem with an item that doesn't actually stop ram raids in the first place.

Not unconstitional in the American sense but severely undermines the convention around this arrangement that we use for things like electoral law.

Again, I'm genuinely confused as to why Labour voted for this if they're now sufficiently concerned to send it back to a committee to review.

You being confused isn't an issue, the government being confused is and unfortunately it appears to be an ongoing trend.

What youth crime issue? There is no youth crime issue, right? That's what the 'reports' say apparently. /Facepalm.

Somehow we have record-breaking truancy but all these kids are staying at home weeding gardens, reading books and knitting peacefully.

Andrew Coster was on the radio saying that the pendulum is swinging and the police are going to be more aggressive in crime prevention/action now (more police chases and increased presence).

/me sighs.

90+ days of ram raids Robberies and NOW they want to take the issue seriously!?

A generation that can't even decide how many genders there are now want to vote?

Heck no

The other way to think about it is this is the first generation to not spend their entire lives exposed to increasing level of lead in their environment and the subsequent damage that causes to cognitive function.

I think compared to previous generations the massive increase in processed food, more pollution, vaping, lack of physical exercise........will more than make up for the lack of lead in their diet.

What I gathered from the interviews on RNZ this morning was it seems to be have been a catastrophic breakdown in communications inside the Labour Party. Again.

In many ways, it doesn't seem like they learn from their previous mistakes, and to be honest, it's a continuing concern that their MP's don't seem to have developed much in the way of skills to go with

5 years of experience. I still maintain they would possibly have been a much better party to have taken over 3 years later than that did, potentially under some decent leadership, they may well have been better prepared.

I mean this is the only thing they can really say at this point though.

We still haven't been told why the PM couldn't recall a discussion a cabinet meeting she was in.

The fact the climb-down was announced jusas Q+A and Newshub Nation went to air is kind of telling.

I will note that it didn't stop Robertson going on Q+A and making the same claims about us being the first to lift rates post-Covid when we were not, and then delivering something more akin to an election speech as opposed to answering a bunch of Jack Tame's questions.

Nothing that went wrong was his fault, but National would definitely have done everything wrong. OK Grant.

Terrible performance from the PM this morning on the AM show, tried her best to dodge everything and not provide any firm answers on the 3waters debacle. It left the impression she was borderline straight out lying which can not be good.

Paywalled, but Willie Jackson continues to do the opposition's job for them when it comes to the RNZ/TVNZ merger.

This isn't his first major faux pas when it comes to this and he seems to drastically weaken any case for it whenever he talks about. Rather than be reassigned or demoted, he supposedly has the backing of cabinet to continue making a duff of it.

If this considered competent policy beach-heading then I'd hate to see what you'd have to do to actually get sacked as a Minister.

I think a major issue Labour has always had is they only have 2-3 really competent MP's, or at least it appears that way. So when someone makes a complete mess there isn't really anyone to hand it on to, I mean how many portfolios can Chris Finlayson actually manage? It is also concerning that despite 5 years in government that situation with the MP's does not appear to have improved at all.

The writing was on the wall when a coalition MP unleashed a foul-mouthed tirade against National MP's and Jacinda Ardern did nothing, despite it being totally against her own 'be nice' policy.

Her people management skills have long been one of her weaknesses, and despite having some promising MP's join the ranks at the second election, those people haven't developed much.
