Hunter Biden, Citing Trump’s Classified Documents Ruling, Seeks Dismissal of Cases - The New York Times (nytimes.com)

Hunter Biden asked a federal court in Delaware on Thursday to toss out his conviction in his gun case, citing the dismissal of charges against former President Donald J. Trump in his classified documents case in Florida.

Abbe Lowell, Hunter Biden’s lawyer, argued that Judge Cannon’s ruling — which referred to Justice Thomas’s lone concurrence — should also negate the appointment of David C. Weiss, the special counsel in Mr. Biden’s gun and tax cases.

The NY Times - The Secret Battle for the Future of the Murdoch Empire  [unlocked link to full article]

24 July 2024

Rupert Murdoch is locked in a secret legal battle against three of his children over the future of the family’s media empire, as he moves to preserve it as a conservative political force after his death, according to a sealed court document obtained by The New York Times.

Mr. Murdoch, 93, set the drama in motion late last year, when he made a surprise move to change the terms of the Murdochs’ irrevocable family trust to ensure that his eldest son and chosen successor, Lachlan, would remain in charge of his vast collection of television networks and newspapers.

The trust currently hands control of the family business to the four oldest children when Mr. Murdoch dies. But he is arguing in court that only by empowering Lachlan to run the company without interference from his more politically moderate siblings can he preserve its conservative editorial bent, and thus protect its commercial value for all his heirs.

Those three siblings - James, Elisabeth and Prudence - were caught completely off-guard by their father’s effort to rewrite what was supposed to be an inviolable trust and have united to stop him. ...

At last ...

Politoco - Biden will announce Supreme Court reform plans next week

26 July 2024

President Joe Biden plans to unveil a proposal on Monday for dramatically reforming the Supreme Court, two people familiar with the matter told POLITICO.

Biden is likely to endorse establishing term limits for justices and an enforceable code of ethics, in an announcement that represents a remarkable shift for a president who had long resisted calls to overhaul the high court.

He is also expected to push for a constitutional amendment limiting immunity for presidents and certain other officeholders, in a response to the court’s July 1 ruling that presidents are shielded from prosecution for “official acts” during their time in office, in a case brought by former President Donald Trump. ...

Imposing term limits and an ethics code on the Supreme Court would likely require legislation. The current divided Congress is not expected to take up the issue before the end of the year.

I'm sure the Supreme Court's decision will be "Yo, like, Congress? Ugh, they’re all up in our business, acting like they know everything.

But guess what?

We ain’t buyin’ it! 🙄

Like, we’re the kings and queens of our own castle, and they can’t tell us what’s what.

So, like, peace out, authority figures! We’re rebels without a cause, breakin’ free from their lame rules. 🤘

The Democrats are going to need the House and the Senate to make any moves on Supreme court.

I'm not sure what any moves  by President are for apart from lighting the way that current legislature will not follow. GOP has no shame, so that does not work.

I think amendments to constitution are even worse needing a supermajority?

Yes, US amendment do require a lot of work, and are unlikely. In particular given the amount of gerrymandering in the US.

However there's no specific number of justices mentioned in the constitution. An act of congress could add more justices, called a "reorganization"

As for what the President can do, the U.S. President cannot issue executive orders that change the Supreme Court.

About all a president can do is make appointments. These nominations must be confirmed by the Senate.

Just saw this come up in my Youtube feed, hadn't seen this one before:

Posting in here as I spotted a fair few (political) deplorables (as well as grifters!) here.

Predates coronavirus and the 2020 election but still relevant even today 🙂

The NY Times - Justice Thomas Failed to Reveal More Private Flights, Senator Says

05 August 2024

Justice Clarence Thomas failed to publicly disclose additional private travel provided by the wealthy conservative donor Harlan Crow, a top Democratic senator said in a letter on Monday.

Customs and Border Protection records revealed that the justice and his wife, Virginia Thomas, took a round trip between Hawaii and New Zealand in November 2010 on Mr. Crow’s private jet ...

The letter is part of an inquiry that the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee has opened into Mr. Crow and the justice ...

I think Musk is really starting to show serious signs of mental illness, probably a persecution complex.

He's posting that civil war is inevitable in the UK and the riots are the fault of the UK government not social media. Seriously?

This is after riots at the weekend in several locations, none of which had more than a few hundred rioters, which was stoked by false claims on social media and from so called 'influencers' ie keyboard warriors.

If I was Starmer I'd think seriously about banning X and Telegram. The vast majority of people would applaud you.

He's definitely cracking up. Surely he doesn't mean that these companies should be forced to use 'X'?

At least one entitled, election-denying MAGA deplorable is having a hard time of things - Kari Lake. Still, can't blame her for trying - in her head she won the Arizona governor's election in 2022, despite all of her court cases failing, and yet (somehow) she's not the occupant of the governor's mansion today...how did that work out? 😀
