It still astounds me how so many Americans are 100% OK with a political party that has to cheat to remain in power. It makes a mockery of them ever claiming to value democracy.

It's probably because the 40% of Americans who voted the Creature into power, lie, cheat and steal every day of their lives, and have a vast admiration for anyone who can get away with it.

Any resemblance the American system has to democracy is purely coincidental and not intended.

DEBATE VIEWERS STRUGGLE WITH CONCEPT OF PRESIDENT WITHOUT GLARING PERSONALITY DISORDER
MIAMI (The Borowitz Report)—Millions of viewers of a televised debate Wednesday night found themselves struggling with the notion of a President with no visible personality disorder.
In interviews across the country, viewers said that they were having difficulty imagining a President who does not display flagrant signs of malignant narcissism, impulse-control deficit, or rampant paranoia.
“I kept trying to picture whether any of these people would be capable of insulting another country on Twitter to compensate for his or her own pathological sense of inadequacy,” Harland Dorrinson, who lives in Akron, Ohio, said. “None of them showed me that they have what it takes to do that.”
“A President should be ready, at a moment’s notice, to ridicule another person’s face,” Carol Foyler, of Nashville, said. “I didn’t see one person on that stage who seemed up to that task.”
Tracy Klugian, who lives in San Diego, said he was taken aback by the candidates showing off their language proficiency. “Every one of them was fluent in English,” he said. “For a President, that would be jarring.”

The Washington Post - Jimmy Carter says Trump wouldn’t be president without help from Russia
June 28 at 11:50 AM
Former president Jimmy Carter said Friday that he believes a full investigation of the 2016 election would show that President Trump prevailed because of Russian interference on his behalf and otherwise would not be in office.
“There’s no doubt that the Russians did interfere in the election, and I think the interference, although not yet quantified, if fully investigated would show that Trump didn’t actually win the election in 2016,” Carter said.
“He lost the election, and he was put into office because the Russians interfered on his behalf.”
His made his comments during a panel discussion at a conference in Leesburg, Va., sponsored by the Carter Center, a nonprofit organization he founded in 1982 that focuses on human rights.
Pressed by historian Jon Meacham, who moderated the discussion, on whether he considers Trump to be “an illegitimate president,” Carter replied: “Based on what I just said, which I can’t retract.” ...

The New York Times - Trump and Putin Share Joke About Election Meddling, Sparking New Furor
June 28, 2019
OSAKA, Japan — They were having a good time. Like old friends reuniting, they warmly shook hands, smiled and chatted amiably.
And then President Trump brushed off Russia’s interference in American democracy with a joke as President Vladimir V. Putin chuckled. ...
As he sat down on Friday with Mr. Putin on the sidelines of an international summit in Japan, Mr. Trump was asked by a reporter if he would tell Russia not to meddle in American elections.
“Yes, of course I will,” Mr. Trump said.
Turning to Mr. Putin, he said, with a half-grin on his face and mock seriousness in his voice, “Don’t meddle in the election, President.”
As Mr. Putin smiled and tittered, Mr. Trump pointed at another Russian official in a playful way and repeated, “Don’t meddle in the election.”
The levity came at a time when Mr. Putin has felt emboldened on the world stage, flexing Russian muscle in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and even South America.
In an interview published just hours before the meeting, Mr. Putin celebrated the rise of the populist right in Europe and the United States and declared that traditional Western-style liberalism “has become obsolete.” ...

The Washington Post - John Roberts pulls out the thesaurus for one of Trump’s nearly 11,000 lies
June 28 at 3:28 PM
Chief Justice John Roberts used every euphemism in the thesaurus this week to accuse the Trump administration of lying :
- “The evidence tells a story that does not match the ... explanation.”
- “The sole stated reason ... seems to have been contrived.”
- There was “a significant mismatch between the decision ... and the rationale.”
- The “explanation ... is incongruent with what the record reveals.”
- Furthermore, it was a “distraction” from the truth, “based on a pretextual rationale” and lacked “a rational connection between the facts found and the choice made.”
The chief justice ... was referring to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross’s baldfaced lie: He testified to Congress that he added a citizenship question to the census “solely” because the Justice Department requested it to help with enforcement of the Voting Rights Act.
Three separate judges found that to be false, and evidence emerging since the trials confirmed appearances: The real rationale was to reduce the power of nonwhite people and Democrats. ...

... I struggle to even coherently frame my disbelief that anyone could be this ignorant of the history of WWII and the terms of Japan's surrender imposed upon it by the allied powers - most significantly by the US - leading to the constitution forbidding Japan from having an offensive military capability.

The New York Times - Trump’s Ignorant Comments About Japan ...
June 28, 2019
Before arriving in Japan, Mr. Trump had reportedly been musing about withdrawing the United States from the security treaty with Japan signed in 1951 and revised in 1960 - the cornerstone of the alliance between the United States and Japan and a pillar of American foreign policy.
On Wednesday, asked about the treaty on Fox News, Mr. Trump sneered, “If Japan is attacked, we will fight World War III.” Then he added: “But if we’re attacked, Japan doesn’t have to help us at all. They can watch it on a Sony television.”
Mr. Trump’s comment demonstrates a strategic cluelessness and historical ignorance that would disqualify a person from even a modest desk job at the State Department.
Though Mr. Trump implied that the security treaty favors Japan, it was largely dictated by the United States.
After Imperial Japan surrendered to the Allies in August 1945, ending World War II, the country was placed under an American-led occupation overseen by the domineering Gen. Douglas MacArthur.
When that occupation ended in April 1952, Japan had turned away from militarism to embrace ideals of pacifism and democracy.
Under Article 9 of a new Constitution that was originally drafted in English at MacArthur’s headquarters, Japan renounced war and pledged never to maintain land, sea or air forces. ...
Mr. Trump’s words are a pointless slap to Japan’s right-wing prime minister, Shinzo Abe, who has ardently sought to cultivate a relationship with Mr. Trump ...
What could Mr. Trump possibly hope to gain from his ignorant, ungrateful and antagonistic behavior? ...
