Because of his pettiness he hurt his friend and fellow conservative Boris Johnson chances at being PM.

It reminds me of a repeated plot point in the "Back to the Future" movies.

In a letter to the Foreign Office, Sir Kim said he wanted to end speculation about his position: "The current situation is making it impossible for me to carry out my role as I would like."

His resignation has prompted widespread support for Sir Kim as well as criticism of Tory frontrunner Boris Johnson.

According to some Whitehall sources, Sir Kim decided to resign after Mr Johnson refused to support him during the Tory leadership debate on Tuesday night ...

I would be very surprised if the source of the "leak" is ever found. 😐

UK Ambassador has by falling on his sword demonstrated a huge amount of honesty, honour, bravery and integrity , something Trump can not comprehend, let alone emulate.

Unfortunately the ambassadors position was untenable as soon as Trump reacted to the news article in the way we all knew he would.

I imagine both PM candidates would be only too happy for May to appoint a new ambassador before she exits the stage. It gets them out of what could be a very awkward hole.

i hope they find the whistle blower and throw the book at them. With the possibility of information of this kind being made public it makes any diplomats job impossible.They might as well use Twitter just like the moron currently living in the White House.

I was thinking of an internal leak but of course it could quite easily be an international player. Most likely Russia.

I would have thought the US was unlikely. Any comprehensive trade deal is years and possibly several presidents/PM's/ambassadors away.

British Ambassador Kim Darroch’s private comments about President Trump were not shocking for those in Washington.

The overall opinion among much of the diplomatic elite here is that the U.S. president is “inept” and “insecure,” as Darroch wrote.

Trump’s secretary of state once even reportedly dubbed the president a “moron.”

Diplomats often trash their hosts, and it’s often well deserved.

André François-Poncet, the French ambassador to Germany in 1935, wrote that Adolf Hitler was “obstinate, stubborn and mean to the point of madness.” ...

Darroch’s decision to resign, which he announced Wednesday, was not a reflection of the severity of his comments ... nothing he said was out of place for a diplomat in his position.

If there is a breakdown in diplomatic norms here ... it did not come from the British ambassador. ...

Ultimately, the rot comes from the top.

Darroch was a career diplomat, but many of his American peers are political appointees.

Trump has rewarded campaign donors, political allies and even personal friends with spots in embassies around the world. ...

He’s given ambassador positions to more people with no diplomatic experience than any president since Franklin D. Roosevelt ...

What is remarkable about this op-ed is that it comes from the USA, not the UK. 😕

Thousands Are Targeted as US "Immigration and Customs Enforcement"Prepares to Raid Undocumented Migrant Families
New York Times

By Caitlin Dickerson and Zolan Kanno-Youngs

Nationwide raids to arrest thousands of members of undocumented families have been scheduled to begin Sunday, according to two current and one former homeland security officials, moving forward with a rapidly changing operation, the final details of which remain in flux. The operation, backed by President Trump, had been postponed, partly because of resistance among officials at his own immigration agency.

The raids, which will be conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement over multiple days, will include “collateral” deportations, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the preliminary stage of the operation. In those deportations, the authorities might detain immigrants who happened to be on the scene, even though they were not targets of the raids.

When possible, family members who are arrested together will be held in family detention centers in Texas and Pennsylvania. But because of space limitations, some might end up staying in hotel rooms until their travel documents can be prepared. ICE’s goal is to deport the families as quickly as possible.

The officials said ICE agents were targeting at least 2,000 immigrants who have been ordered deported — some as a result of their failure to appear in court — but who remain in the country illegally. The operation is expected to take place in at least 10 major cities.

The families being targeted crossed the border recently: The Trump administration expedited their immigration proceedings last fall. In February, many of those immigrants were given notice to report to an ICE office and leave the United States, the homeland security officials said.

Matthew Bourke, an ICE spokesman, said in a statement on Wednesday that the agency would not comment on specific details related to enforcement operations, to ensure the safety and security of agency personnel.

The threat of deportation has rattled immigrant communities across the country, prompted backlash from local politicians and police officials and stoked division inside the Department of Homeland Security — the agency that is charged with carrying out the deportations. The Trump administration’s goal is to use the operation as a show of force to deter families from approaching the southwestern border, the officials said.

While rare, such coordinated raids have occurred under previous administrations. Agents have expressed apprehensions about arresting babies and young children, officials have said. The agents have also noted that the operation might have limited success because word has already spread among immigrant communities about how to avoid arrest — namely, by refusing to open the door when an agent approaches one’s home. ICE agents are not legally allowed to forcibly enter a home.

Immigration defense lawyers are likely to file motions to reopen the families’ immigration cases, which would significantly delay, if not stop altogether, their removal from the United States.

For weeks last month, the ICE director at the time, Mark Morgan, signaled that agents would escalate efforts to round up families. Days before the operation was to begin, Mr. Trump forecast the plan on Twitter, blindsiding ICE agents whose safety officials feared would be compromised as a result.

In early June, the Department of Homeland Security’s acting secretary, Kevin K. McAleenan, told Mr. Morgan to call off the operation. Mr. McAleenan did not support the raids, officials said at the time, in part out of concern that undocumented parents could be separated from any of their children who are American citizens.

Mr. Morgan then directly lobbied Mr. Trump to move forward with the raids. He is now the commissioner of Customs and Border Protection, another arm of the Department of Homeland Security.

In a tense meeting with White House officials on June 21, two days before the raids were scheduled to begin, Mr. McAleenan again outlined the challenges of the operation, including the separation of families and the logistics of housing them until they can be removed. If undocumented parents are found to have children who are United States citizens, for example, ICE agents will need to wait with the children in a hotel room until a relative in the United States can claim them.

Homeland security officials also worried that many of the families that the administration had hoped to detain might have left the addresses known to ICE after Mr. Trump tweeted the agency’s plans.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi called Mr. Trump after his tweet and urged him to halt the operation, which in a statement hours later she described as “heartless.”

Mr. Trump then tweeted that he would delay the effort at the Democrats’ request. But he also threatened to resume the deportations if Democrats refused to join with Republican lawmakers to “work out a solution to the Asylum and Loophole problems at the Southern Border.”

Days later, the Senate passed a $4.6 billion humanitarian aid package for the border.

Migrant crossings have declined since May, when 144,200 migrants were taken into custody at the southwestern border — a 13-year high.

Last Friday, Mr. Trump said the raids would begin “fairly soon.”

“I say they came in illegally, and we’re bringing them out legally,” the president told reporters.

Former Palm Beach State Attorney Barry Krischer accused Labor Secretary Alex Acosta of trying to “rewrite history” by suggesting that state prosecutors in Florida went easy on accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein when he got a lenient plea deal more than a decade ago.

Acosta was the U.S. attorney in Miami who oversaw the federal investigation into Epstein in 2008. Even though investigators identified 36 underage victims and issued a 53-page indictment that could have sent him to prison for life, Epstein was allowed to plead guilty to two state prostitution charges and serve just 13 months in county jail while continuing to work from his office six days a week. A federal judge later found the deal unconstitutional because Acosta had not conferred with the victims after negotiations with Epstein’s lawyers.

Acosta held a press conference Wednesday to defend the plea deal. Acosta claimed that the deal was necessary to ensure that Epstein received jail time because a trial would have been “a roll of the dice.”

“We’ve seen other cases where state prosecutors let folks go with no sentence and people shake their heads. In this case, the federal office intervened before the plea was taken and said, ‘Stop,’” he said. “The Palm Beach state attorney’s office was willing to let Epstein walk free. No jail time. Nothing. Prosecutors in my former office found this to be completely unacceptable, and we became involved.”

Krischer, who served as the Palm Beach state attorney at the time, unequivocally rejected Acosta’s claim, writing that state prosecutors were shut out of the process while Acosta held secret negotiations with Epstein’s attorneys.

“I can emphatically state that Mr. Acosta’s recollection of this matter is completely wrong,” Krischer said in a statement. “The US Attorney’s Office produced a 53-page indictment that was abandoned after secret negotiations between Mr. Epstein’s lawyers and Mr. Acosta. The State Attorney’s Office was not a party to those meetings or negotiations, and definitely had no part in the federal Non-Prosecution Agreement and the unusual confidentiality arrangement that kept everything hidden from the victims.”

“If Mr. Acosta was truly concerned with the State’s case and felt he had to rescue the matter, he would have moved forward with the 53-page indictment that his own office drafted. Instead, Mr. Acosta brokered a secret plea deal that resulted in a Non-Prosecution Agreement in violation of the Crime Victim’s Rights act,” he wrote, adding that Acosta “should not be allowed to rewrite history.”

President Donald Trump will no longer pursue adding a question on citizenship to the 2020 US census questionnaire.

Instead, he said he had directed officials to obtain the information through an executive order for government agencies, as court challenges would have delayed a census.

"We will leave no stone unturned," Mr Trump said.

The retreat follows a long fight over the inclusion of the question, which the Supreme Court had blocked in June.

"We are not backing down on our effort to determine the citizenship status of the United States population," the US president said.

The executive order will require government agencies to hand over documents regarding citizenship.

"As a result of today's executive order we will be able to ensure the 2020 census generates an accurate count of how many citizens, non-citizens and illegal aliens are in the United States of America," Mr Trump said at the White House. ...

Trump doesn't really care whether or not the citizenship question is included in the census - he just wants to argue for it in public, appealing to his base. (surprise!) 😕
