Health is broken .........

Overall, Public Health is certainly in a better space than what it was 20 years ago. But at what cost? It's not free, nor will ever be free.

Public health is actually pretty good here. Compared to the UK, where my elderly mother is a regular user, the getting of appointments in a timely manner, the availability of access to care and even simple GP visits here is far better than it is for most people in the UK. My mother is lucky if she can get a GP appointment in 10 days. I could get one tomorrow. Today, possibly.

Of course there are huge differences caused by where you live - a quiet rural village in both locations is likely to result in faster GP visits, for example. Also of course huge differences in the scale - the UK NHS actually has a workforce which is roughly equivalent to everybody in Auckland at 1.3 million staff.

It's 'more free' in the UK as there are no charges for visiting the GP etc but that does have the negative side of people who do not really need to see the GP actually do since there is no deterrent fee, thus clogging the system somewhat.

Overall though I would say we do pretty well for health services here - but I do not think such a thing can be free (and of course even if we did not pay to see the GP or whatever, we'd be paying tax to pay for it instead so still not free.)

Given the number of people who are not actually net tax payers in NZ, it's even better than you'd expect really.

I think the bottlenecks lie more with specialist treatment, especially in some regions.

I wasn't sure where to put this. It fits with benefit fraud but also with the earlier discussion here. In any case, everyone with any interest in the issue of social welfare and ripping off the taxpayer should definitely read this.

Interesting. In NZ there is an attitude amongst some the Tax fraud is a sport or a duty and benefit abuse something akin to treason or murder. Both are wrong and take money from the Crown and other New Zealanders. There is of course a difference between tax and benefit Fraud, tax avoidance and benefit abuse.

Rarely does such a short post sum up a person's entire persona so succinctly.

I can't really regard matters relating to tax as 'taking money from the Crown' when, in fact, what it is is refusing to hand over your own money that the Crown wishes to take from you by force.

Of course the Crown has the ability to pursue those it deems to be doing that too much, but for me not allowing someone to take what you earned has a different feel. Who among us would, for example, promptly ring Customs if a parcel on which GST was due but which had not been noticed on arrival was sent to us, volunteering to pay undemanded GST? Few if any if we are honest.

Unless you have met Wiggum and know him/her I am not sure you can really claim that you can deduce their entire persona from that.

Fraudster Joanne Harrison abused a position of trust to steal $725,000 from taxpayers to fund her lifestyle. She manipulated and deceived to cover her tracks and keep the property she purchased with the money and she engineered the loss of other people’s jobs when they became suspicious of her. She did everything possible to avoid detection and prevent loss of her ill-gotten gains, including concealing her relationship with her husband. Ultimately she was sentenced to just three years, seven months jail. Of course she will only serve a portion of that. If I was as hard-working as Wiggum and 6FIEND, I would be a lot more upset by this and other large-scale frauds than a few beneficiaries fiddling their meagre supplements.

Good for her though that it wasn’t benefit fraud. She might have got life.

Is Joanne Harrison a leader of a political party, and pushing for job as New Zealands minister of social development?

Its just insults, and I take no offense to them. They don't deserve a reply. Like water off a ducks back to me.

You have repeatedly stated that you object to beneficiaries living it up on your dime. On that basis I would expect you to object to this.

I do object to it, she got jail, and IMO should have got more. I would object even more if she was applying for job as Minister of finance. But she is not, very little here. Moving on.

My point is that I think a lot of the outrage is misplaced. Harrison got caught so we know about her. But she was able to do what she did because of sloppy procedures. This kind of thing emerges on a regular basis and nothing ever seems to change. I think that costs the taxpayers a lot more than benefit fraud, as does tax fraud, which you would have learned if you had bothered reading all of the link I provided.
