Health is broken .........
Overall, Public Health is certainly in a better space than what it was 20 years ago. But at what cost? It's not free, nor will ever be free.
Public health is actually pretty good here. Compared to the UK, where my elderly mother is a regular user, the getting of appointments in a timely manner, the availability of access to care and even simple GP visits here is far better than it is for most people in the UK. My mother is lucky if she can get a GP appointment in 10 days. I could get one tomorrow. Today, possibly.
Of course there are huge differences caused by where you live - a quiet rural village in both locations is likely to result in faster GP visits, for example. Also of course huge differences in the scale - the UK NHS actually has a workforce which is roughly equivalent to everybody in Auckland at 1.3 million staff.
It's 'more free' in the UK as there are no charges for visiting the GP etc but that does have the negative side of people who do not really need to see the GP actually do since there is no deterrent fee, thus clogging the system somewhat.
Overall though I would say we do pretty well for health services here - but I do not think such a thing can be free (and of course even if we did not pay to see the GP or whatever, we'd be paying tax to pay for it instead so still not free.)
Given the number of people who are not actually net tax payers in NZ, it's even better than you'd expect really.
