I still haven't seen an answer regarding this ""In fact, there seem to be some ministries who aren't performing any of their key functions." "

NZTA being incapable of maintaining the integrity of the WOF system springs to mind. That's before you get into the appalling handling of business cases and the oft-delayed-without-explanation-or-consequence delivery of projects like Waterview (months late), Transmission Gully (likely to be years late).

IRD has had such a high turnover of staff that they took investigators off cases and had them manning the phones for months.

So, was it their fault, or the fault of the government cost cutting ?

And as I said, private industry is no better, big projects delivered late, cost over runs, bankruptcies , subbies not being paid

Why did IRD have a high turn over ?, people leaving to get better wages ? But everyone knows civil servants get huge holidays and are paid too much (where as they get the same holidays as everyone else and are generally paid lower than industry)

And was it not private industry that abused the WOF system ?

I am sure if MOT went out to check the private WOF companies and punished the hell out of them, people would be complaining about the date of tax payers money because private industry knows what it is doing, and how dare they put small businesses out of business with their over the top regime .

And is it not private industry that did the actual work on waterview tunnel and transmission gully ?

And was it not private industry that designed and built the CTV building in Christchurch ?

And how exactly do you know no one is held accountable, are you privy to employment matters in all of these departments ?

And what about all that sub standard steel that was bought in by private industry from China

Look at all of the throw away garbage private businesses bring in to sell.

There is a saying something like "privatise the profits, socialise the costs"

It does not matter what government does, in some people eyes they will always be doing it wrong.

You're right, I don't have dozens of dozens of OIA documents, Wineboxes, full HR files for every single person, copies of the contracts signed for various projects.

Guess I better not comment about anything ever again.

You quoted three items which you considered in your opinion to be key functions. The quoted agencies have many KPIs and key deliverables to the government. How does three equal all their key functions not being performed.

Yea guess I have no point at all. I'm out.

The bill for the Reefer-endum law has been revealed.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/117903936/how-will-you-vote-law-to-legalise-personal-cannabis-revealed

This bit here ticks me off though, So any new government could just ignore the yes vote, what's the bloody point of it then.

Little has said it would be the referendum would be binding, meaning a government would have to enact the result of the 2020 vote, however this has been contested.

The referendum will be "indicative", meaning the Government-of-the-day would have to support it through the parliamentary process.

This meant any new Government after the 2020 election could decide to ignore a "yes" vote.

Little on Tuesday said the first cross-party meeting on the bill would happen later this week.

National Party leader Simon Bridges has said he would not personally vote for legalisation, and the party would not commit to enacting the outcome of a referendum.

I'm not sure what the point of it is.  Possibly Winston is partly behind it (having a referendum as an alternative to leadership).

I guess there are enough zealous conservatives voting for all parties who still believe the "reefer madness" myth, ignorant of how they're supporting continuation of young people being criminalised and organised crime syndicates profit from continued prohibition, clutching their pearls while they knock back a few G&Ts or bottles of Savvy.

Unfortunately, I'm confident that the alcohol industry will side with the ignorant cannabis prohibitionists, and lobby hard against.

There needs to be a massive campaign based on facts, particularly relative harm, and data on the effect of decriminalisation and legalisation where it's been done.

I'm not surprised that Bridges is against.  Brainwashing from birth in the Baptist cult probably explains a lot about his weird authoritarian attitudes.

National have released proposed transport policies "for discussion".  Notably:

Issue fines to cyclists if they use the road when cycle lanes are available.

Get rid of excise on petrol - use RUC for taxing all vehicles instead.

These aren't proposals designed to create constructive debate but very clearly targeted to drive a wedge in "the left" (ie between "blue collar" and "woke").  They're both really non-issues - road funding has to change anyway, and we probably need to build more cycleways, but they've been issued as sensational headlines, and our local media have taken the bait, hook, line and sinker.

Can someone explain what "woke" means.

1. To issue fines to cyclists you would need to see them, stop them, identify them (There is no requirement for anyone to have a licence for bikes, ask an 8 year old).

The bikes thing is just National pandering to what they perceive voters whinge about and will score them votes. It's pointless and 99.99% worthless.

2. Go look at RUC charges for diesel vehicles, National would be talking a huge increase in taxes.

RUC rates have changed as of 1 July 2019 a powered vehicle with two axles under 3.5 tonne will pay $72 per 1,000km.

Diesel has no fuel taxes unlike petrol where it is built in.

At 6L/100KM would see a petrol car use 60L per 1000Km (Close enough to 40MPG)

Petrol @2.26/l would be $135.60

Diesel @1.63 would be $97.80 + $72 RUC = 169.80

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woke

(Used in the pejorative these days - similar to "SJW" or - particularly in the US and very unfortunately - "liberal").

If accused of being "woke" in the pejorative, "OK Boomer" (which I don't like either) seems fitting.

I think the idea of National's strategy is to form a divide between Labour-voting working class voters and urban liberals.  The stereotype of one group, they drive a V8, long for cheaper petrol, and hate lycra-clad cyclists getting in their way. The other - cyclists don't generally like people in fast noisy cars hurling abuse at them or worse.

Huh...Then why is it used in the context of an insult by so many ?

It seems to me that becoming aware of the issues which are affecting us (social, climate, racial, etc) is a GOOD thing.

Infant's playground "goody two shoes" wasn't a compliment?

I don't know, it's even more dissonant when many of the social conservatives and authoritarians using the terms invoke Jesus as their guide.

If he'd stayed in his grave instead of resurrecting and heading skyward, he'd be rolling over.

Laws are only good if you can police them.

Try asking an 8 year old for ID.

Whats their next step ?, confiscate the bike, that would make a great headline "Police take bikes from children for nat having a drivers licence on them"

The whole idea is just stupidity wrapped up in a sound bite to try and score voters from whingers.

Yep they do, in some cases it is so they can be seen because cycleways are sometime not next to the road and people turning left wipe them out.

In other cases its to get to the centre so they can turn right.

Then there are the cases where motorists have used the cycle lane as a parking space, or road works signs are placed in the middle of the cycle lane, the cycle lanes are full of broken glass, loose gravel, etc.

And yes, there are also the inconsiderate cyclists who ride 2-3 wide as they have the "right" to be on the road, but they are a small minority.

most european countries have a similar law , you must use a cycle lane if available and a fine if you dont , so it isnt a law they have pulled out of thin air .

Common sense is not as common as you think.
