Too bad they're more scared of tomboys and drag queens than mass shootings in Florida schools.

NPR: Republican Ex-Florida lawmaker behind the 'Don't Say Gay' law pleads guilty to COVID relief fraud

A former Florida lawmaker who sponsored a bill dubbed the "Don't Say Gay" law by critics has pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining COVID-19 relief funds.

Harding faces up to 35 years in prison
...
The former Republican lawmaker shot to notoriety last year as one of the sponsors of a controversial Florida law that outlawed the discussion of sexuality and gender in public school classrooms from kindergarten through grade 3 [aged 8-9 years old].

The legislation became a blueprint for similar laws in more than a dozen other conservative states.

He resigned from Florida's House of Representatives one day later.

AP News : DeSantis to expand ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law to all grades

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis ′ administration is moving to forbid classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in all grades, expanding the controversial law critics call “Don’t Say Gay” as the Republican governor continues to focus on cultural issues ahead of his expected presidential run.

The proposal, which would not require legislative approval, is scheduled for a vote next month before the state Board of Education and has been put forward by the state Education Department, both of which are led by appointees of the governor.

The rule change would ban lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity from grades 4 to 12, unless required by existing state standards or as part of reproductive health instruction that students can choose not to take. The initial law that DeSantis championed last spring bans those lessons in kindergarten through the third grade.

I don't know what her message was, it seems to be a mix of rational and conspiracy theory, but I really don't care either.

The behaviour of some people in Albert Park today was disgusting, and most definitely not something to be proud of.

If that was a deliberate act, absolutely, along with people throwing soup, making threats, assaulting others and spitting on police cars. By all means disagree with people, but do it peacefully.

I wasn't there so only have the media videos to go by. Agree that bad behaviour in any form is unacceptable. Unfortunately events like this always attract a few troublemakers. That shouldn't detract from the fact that 'Posie' is another exploitative populist bottom feeder trying to make an easy buck by pandering to the prejudices of the deplorable crowd. She tries to wrap her nastiness in a pretty package ('just defending the rights of women') but she is crowd surfing on a wave of real misery. I find people like her worse than those who support her.

Society is in deep deep trouble when 'so called' intelligent people think this is protecting our society, when a very very small minority of very very narrow minded people can get away with this:

BBC News: Principal fired after Florida students shown Michelangelo statue of David

A principal of a Florida school has been forced to resign after a parent complained that students were exposed to pornography when shown Michelangelo's statue of David.

Please note this was a complaint from ONE parent.

I could say a lot more but I would be banned.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

What I find concerning is she says she (apparently) has nothing to do with Nazis or neo-Nazis, yet it seems they (somehow) turn up almost all her protests. She must have something to do with them if they're always there.

According to The Spinoff, the motorbikes were part of Brian Tamaki's supporting mob. Gee, what a surprise to see him involved in promoting something like this - no doubt looking for more "followers" 🙄

US Republican book ban law threatens Bible In Utah schools

Rebel HQ

In an incredibly ironic turn of events, Utah parents upset about the GOPs move to ban books in the state's public schools, one parent claims the Bible should be subject to the "indecent literature" ban put forth by Republicans.

This is news from 2019, but I though I'd post it since I mentioned US state Utah (66% Mormon).

The deep-south and Florida aren't the only embarrassing states.

Salt Lake Tribune: Utah House approves ban on 15-year-olds getting married, 16- and 17-year-olds would need parental permission

Fifteen-year-olds looking to wed may soon be legally barred after a bill raising Utah’s minimum marriage age to 16 easily cleared the House on Friday.

State representatives voted 55-6 for the bill, HB234, which requires parental consent and judicial approval for a 16- or 17-year-old to marry, and imposes a seven-year maximum age gap between a minor and their potential spouse.

“I see this as a way for us to protect children,” said bill sponsor Rep. Angela Romero, D-Salt Lake City, “and knowing that there are some special circumstances where a marriage might happen.”

Romero originally intended to ban all underage marriages in the state, but agreed to a more incremental compromise that would eliminate the ability of 15-year-old Utahns to marry and to impose judicial oversight for the marriages of older teens. Current law requires judicial approval at age 15, and only a parent’s consent beginning at age 16.

The seven-year age gap was added through an amendment by Rep. Brian King, D-Salt Lake City. It would not apply to marriages between two adults, he said, but only when an older individual is seeking to marry a child.

“I think it provides greater protection and assurance that we’re not having coercive marriages being arranged,” he said.

An extract from a long and depressing article ...

The Guardian - Meet the real-life mogul clans ...

25 March 2023

... arguably Murdoch’s most egregiously reckless act [was] the creation of Donald Trump.

Without first the Murdoch-owned New York Post and then later Fox News, Trump might still just be a narcissistic property developer from Queens with a bad haircut.

But it was Murdoch’s media might that helped turn the man he is alleged to have referred to as a “f*cking idiot” into arguably the most dysfunctional president in United States history, and reshape the American political landscape into one of culturally entrenched hostilities.

Summary: When dealing with US law enforcement, even when they are doing something illegal and wrong, always be polite. Making it personal and pissing off a US law enforcement officer is always a bad idea.

Trump is really opening old wounds in the FBI; not a smart move for a criminal like Trump.

So what are the "old wounds"? Trump's rally at Waco Texas, on the anniversary of the Waco siege.

For those who may not know, suspecting a cult of stockpiling illegal weapons, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) obtained a search warrant. It all went horribly wrong. An intense gunfight broke out killing four FBI agents,

The FBI launched a tear gas attack. Shortly thereafter, center became engulfed in flames, killing 76 cultists including 25 children, two pregnant women, and the cult leader.

Some believe one or more cultists set fire to their compound, for reasons unknown; Extreme right-wingers tend to argue that the tear gas grenades' started the fire.

But no one can argue how senior FBI officials are going to feel about Trump's Waco rally: they are not going to be happy.
