Ah, thanks for the update. I assume the standard functions will be bau, and "should" be better managed if there are more skills available. So, the upgrade scenario is big question mark. Wonder how my new ChCh Water Rates will go? We have plenty of water here, the rates are a rort

That's the billion dollar question, really. Notable also that some councils have had metered water for some time now while others push back against it as if it's privatisation.

A bit of a rock and a hard place for the Government, I have some sympathy for the situation. Damned if they took longer and got it 'right' and damned if they just put something in place.

It gets lost that while overseas Kiwis had a right to come home, the Kiwis who live here and actually live their lives have a right to be protected from multiples more points of ingress of a virus during a global pandemic as well.

I feel like "If you're going to curtail that right, your officials' advice needs to be up to scratch and you have to be more responsive with your repatriation system" is probably a reasonable conclusion.

I can understand if there is a real cost for water, managing shortages, but ChCh doesnt have that issue. Our already clean water is from aquifers, we don't pay to transport it from other areas, so its a rort

It costs to maintain all of the water infrastructure, water, storm water, waste.

Then there is STILL treatment of the water, monitoring it, chlorinating it, fluoridating it etc. etc etc etc.

Real costs.

Long existing real costs. Which for decades and longer have not required a top up by higher water users. What has changed this year? Lets say we all reduce water usage, which is essentially garden and lawn watering, so the water rates collection becomes zero? What is the gain? Nothing. What is the benefit to CCC from us watering lawns and gardens less? Nothing, apart from less carbon sequestation, less veges, less personal pride, and a less "Garden City" outlook

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/130623964/jacinda-ardern-attended-labour-caucus-meeting-where-controversial-three-waters-entrenchment-clause-was-discussed?cid=app-iPhone

At some point after that caucus meeting the PM is on record as saying  “not necessarily something I would be aware of”.

Yet, she was present at the meeting where it was discussed.

Was she asleep at the time? The only other option doesn't exactly paint her in a good light either. The name Pinocchio comes to mind.

I'd suggest people costs and council incomes are inversely proportional right now, certainly is in Auckland. There are more people earning over 100K in the council than ever before, whilst income streams from traditional revenue is almost halved.

Perhaps they no longer have the fat to absorb the costs.

I'd suggest the direct costs of supplying and keeping water clean and safe and flowing, are higher than any time before and have increased by the biggest amount over time, well over what the incremental rates increases can sustain alone.

I agree this looks incredibly damning.

I heard things on Radio NZ and read in the herald about what Mahuta's real agenda on all this is. It doesn't seem like it's as much about clean water as it is about Co-Govenance.

Someone's head would roll in any other Government.

Yes, Seen similar articles. Also articles about the pressure that was brought to bear by some factions of the the Labour caucus around the new Resource Management Act and one other thing that Megan Wood was involved in, re co-governance. There's some pretty big wedges being driven between some parts of society where there were never any beforehand.  I just wonder when some people openly start saying enough is enough.

She didn't outright so "no, I wasn't aware", she worded it with an out "not something I'd necessarily be aware of", not an outright denial, but pretty close. Remember, she is the queen of spin. As for Mahuta, co-governence and family contracts

That's what she did her apprenticeship on, working with Alastair Campbell for Tony Blair.

Why oh Why can't our esteemed leader just admit when she/they make a mistake?!

She won't admit they made a mistake not including nurses in the first round of immigration relief or the second one. It's obvious they made a mistake and they *must* know it, and just erodes people's trust in her that she won't admit when they make a mistake.

People make mistakes they aren't perfect, but continuing to deny you even made a mistake doesn't give people confidence in their ability to not continue to do so.

Bear in mind that was a caucus meeting not a cabinet meeting. I expect it's not nearly as formal.

Which one is it that you don't need to pay attention in?
