Apple CEO Tim Cook's close ties with Donald Trump may explain why the company spends less on lobbying than other tech giants

Business Insider australia, By Rosalie Chan
  • Apple spent less on lobbying than Microsoft,Facebook,Amazon, and Alphabet.

  • However, Apple CEO Tim Cook has forged close ties with President Donald Trump, his daughter Ivanka Trump, and Trump’s senior adviser Jared Kushner, the Wall Street Journal‘s Tripp Mickle reports.

  • If Cook disagrees with one of Trump’s policies, he often lets the administration know before taking a stance.

Even though Apple has spent less on lobbying than the other tech giants, CEO Tim Cook has forged close ties with President Donald Trump, the Wall Street Journal‘s Tripp Mickle reports.

Since 2017, Apple has spent nearly $US18 million on lobbying, according to the Centre for Responsive Politics.

In comparison
  • >Microsoft spent $US24 million

  • Facebook spent $US32 million

  • Amazon spent $US36 million

  • Alphabet spent $US47 million

...In August, Cook reached out to Kushner to explain how upcoming tariffs would increase iPhone prices and hurt its competition with other phone companies like Samsung. Within days, the Trump administration exempted iPhones, along with other electronics products, from the tariff plan

Smoking texts spotlight diplomat Bill Taylor’s discomfort with Trump’s Ukraine pressure campaign

Washington Post By James Hohmann with Mariana Alfaro

In the text messages released Thursday night by House investigators, veteran diplomat Bill Taylor sounds like someone who was determined to create a paper trail. He clearly had good reasons for doing so.

“As I said on the phone, I think it’s crazy to withhold security assistance for help with a political campaign,” Taylor wrote to U.S. Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland on Sept. 9.

He was complaining that President Trump’s order to withhold congressionally approved military aid to Ukraine was creating a “nightmare scenario.”

The day before, in another text, Taylor hinted he might resign after speaking by phone with Sondland, a major GOP donor who owns multiple luxury hotels and scored his appointment after donating a million bucks to the Trump inaugural committee.

Taylor took over as the chargé d’affaires at the U.S. embassy in Ukraine this June after Trump reportedly ordered the ouster of the previous ambassador at the behest of his fixer Rudy Giuliani. This is his second tour of duty in Kiev. George W. Bush nominated him to be the ambassador in 2006, and he stayed on through the fall of 2009.

On Sept. 1, the day Vice President Pence met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Warsaw, Taylor texted Sondland: “Are we now saying that security assistance and [a White House] meeting are conditioned on investigations?”

Sondland could have said no. Instead, he took the conversation offline. “Call me,” he wrote.

Trump uses vulgarity, calls for Romney’s impeachment after senator criticizes president’s China, Ukraine appeals

Washington Post, By Colby Itkowitz

President Trump resumed his attacks on Senator Mitt Romney (Republican-Utah) Saturday morning, calling the 2012 GOP presidential nominee a “pompous ‘ass’ ” and calling for the senator’s impeachment a day after Romney criticized Trump for asking foreign leaders to investigate a political opponent.

“Somebody please wake up Mitt Romney and tell him that my conversation with the Ukrainian President was a congenial and very appropriate one, and my statement on China pertained to corruption, not politics. If Mitt worked this hard on Obama, he could have won. Sadly, he choked!” Trump tweeted.

Trump continued, “Mitt Romney never knew how to win. He is a pompous ‘ass’ who has been fighting me from the beginning, except when he begged me for my endorsement for his Senate run (I gave it to him), and when he begged me to be Secretary of State (I didn’t give it to him). He is so bad for R’s!”

Hours later, Trump suggested, with no evidence, that Utah voters regretted their choice and that Romney should be impeached. Romney was elected with 62.6 percent of the vote in 2018.

“I’m hearing that the Great People of Utah are considering their vote for their Pompous Senator, Mitt Romney, to be a big mistake. I agree! He is a fool who is playing right into the hands of the Do Nothing Democrats! #IMPEACHMITTROMNEY,” Trump tweeted.

A U.S. senator cannot be impeached. Instead, the Constitution gives the House or Senate the power to expel one of its own members by a two-thirds vote.

The more dirt the democrats dig up on Trump, the more desperate they seem, the more I believe everything Trump says. #MAGA #KAG

The unfortunate belief of ~ 50 million Americans  (why getting rid of the fascist cult of Trumpism isn't going to be easy).

BBC News - Trump impeachment: Second whistleblower emerges

today

A second whistleblower has come forward in the impeachment case against US President Donald Trump, according to lawyers representing the first one.

Mark Zaid told ABC News the second person was also an intelligence official and they had spoken to the inspector general.

The White House has made no direct comment. President Trump has repeatedly rejected the original complaint.

No details have been released about the second whistleblower's claims.

However, Mr Zaid said the person had first-hand knowledge of allegations associated with the phone call Mr Trump made with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on 25 July.  ...

"This whistleblower has first hand knowledge"

The Washington Post - The Justice Department is oddly incurious about potential criminality in the Trump-Ukraine mess

October 6 at 3:57 PM

Something is not adding up about the Justice Department’s account of its decision not to open a criminal investigation based on a complaint by a whistleblower in the U.S. intelligence community about President Trump’s dealings with Ukraine. ...

The Justice Department appears to have conducted a wholly cursory examination.

It interviewed no witnesses and examined no evidence other than the complaint.

Text messages within the State Department that might have provided evidence of criminality were not examined.

Justice closed the file without opening a formal investigation. ...

[The three top officials in the Justice Department’s criminal chain of command have no prosecutorial experience]

One point the Justice Department has maintained consistently is that the final decision was made by Brian Benczkowski, the head of the Criminal Division, in consultation with career attorneys at the Public Integrity Section.

Benczkowski is a political appointee with zero prosecutorial experience.

Likewise, neither Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey A. Rosen nor Attorney General William P. Barr have spent a day as a prosecutor. ...

Political power is not there so you can punish those with no political power, it's to ensure those with power go unpunished.

Not serious, or pressing; just considered this video a nice a palate cleanser after throwing up a little in your mouth from US politics.

Why does TRUMP want to buy GREENLAND?

VisualPolitik EN

Trump has said he wants to buy Greenland and, crazy as it sounds, it makes sense. Other American presidents like Harry S. Truman tried the same in the past. The truth is Greenland is a paradise natural resource wise: oil, uranium and all kinds of minerals that are ready to be exploited.

The problem? This island belongs to the Danish Crown. And Denmark is not willing to give away a place with so much natural wealth.

Nevertheless, the political situation on this territory is far from clear. Greelanders have been fighting for independence for decades. To what extent would they consider becoming part of USA? Is Greenland such a good investment for America? We will answer to all of this questions on this video.

Vice President Mike Pence Takes HHS To The Past

Full Frontal with Samantha Bee

Health and Human Services is one of America’s most important departments and Mike Pence, who knows nothing about health, or being a human, is working hard to ruin it.

The New York Times - Trump Taxes: President Ordered to Turn Over Returns to Manhattan D.A.

A judge rejected the president’s argument that he was immune from criminal investigations.

Oct. 7, 2019

A federal judge on Monday rejected a bold argument from President Trump that sitting presidents are immune from criminal investigations, allowing the Manhattan district attorney’s office to move forward with a subpoena seeking eight years of the president’s personal and corporate tax returns.

The ruling issued by Judge Victor Marrero of Manhattan federal court does not mean that the president’s tax returns will be turned over immediately.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers quickly appealed the decision, and the appeals court agreed to temporarily block the order.

The judge’s decision came a little more than a month after the Manhattan district attorney subpoenaed Mr. Trump’s accounting firm, Mazars USA, for his personal and corporate returns dating to 2011. ...

Regarding "pushing the New York City and State prosecutors to go get President Trump"

New Yorkers knew Trump before he ran for President. They've long known he's a sleaze and scumbag. No one had to encourage them.

The IRS has stated that nothing prevents an individual from releasing their tax returns; an audit cannot stop the tax return release, and several former leaders of IRS have said that audits are a poor reason to justify not releasing tax returns.

The practice of releasing returns as president or when running for office didn't become commonplace until the late 1960's.

In the run-up to the 1968 presidential election, George Romney (the governor of Michigan at the time) released 12 years of his returns from 1955-1966 after being pressed by reporters.

This set the precedent for presidential candidates to release their tax returns. Every president from Richard Nixon onward has made their tax returns public.

The only exceptions are Donald Trump and Gerald Ford (who kept his tax returns private).

kingdragonfly: Regarding "pushing the New York City and State prosecutors to go get President Trump"

Don't forget that when New York charged Cohen they documents also listed an unindicted co-conspiritor who was equally culpable in his crimes. They are probably waiting for Trump to leave office before charging him. The Mueller probe turned up a lot of criminal wrongdoing a fair bit of which was handed off to state level authorities to charge. State level charges can't be pardoned by the President so he can't pull a Nixon and resign and collect a pardon from his VP on the way out.
