I just received an email from a Government Department which started off with:

Kia ora and thank you for contacting us.

My question is, should "Kia Ora" be used in official Government correspondence, rather than the more traditional "Dear Mr Brown"?

Or just Hi or Hello might be better?

True, but are they teaching kids in school to say "Kia Ora" in correspondence rather than "Dear" "Hi" or "Hello".

Why mix languages in the same email?

Why not? Lots of other countries mix languages up a bit. It does come across as lightly informal but here is no reason why letters actually need to be overly formal.

And writing in Te Reo there are no worries about pronunciation.

Yeah you tell them. All government correspondence should be completely written in Te Reo so our kids can learn it properly.

Sounds like a nice, non-threatening, way to start a letter...

People who have an issue with this sort of thing are exactly what Taika Waititi is talking about. It just literally DOES NOT MATTER, nor does it affect the reading of the letter.

I have used it for years, did so when I worked for the government and it was encouraged also as a verbal greeting. It's use is not new for Government Departments and agencies. It is a good thing.

Unless it is 'Dear Sir', 'Dear Madam' or 'Dear Mr Smith' or 'Dear Mrs Smith' etc then no, it isn't.

Kia Ora...well thanks everyone for your replies. I can see I need to liberally splash around phrases such as kia ora to show how tolerant I am of current trends. Not sure why this thread was shifted out of "off topic" to politics..is it really a political discussion?
