The VCs email have been released under the OIA.  Doesn't look good for her

TL-DR:  she was out to ban him for political reasons from the outset.  Security concerns were a vehicle of convenience to do so - even though campus security had a security plan for the event.

My brain is still struggling with the notion that someone who is calling for all people to be treated equally, regardless of their race, is somehow the racist.

It is also interesting to note that the VC's objection frequently referenced the fact that the University was Te Tiriti-led.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi speaks very specifically in support of the ideas that Brash's "Hobson's Pledge" group are advocating.

Some examples:

Seeing that many of her Majesty’s subjects have already settled in the country and are constantly arriving and that it is desirable for their protection as well as the protection of the natives, to establish a government amongst them.

and

The Queen of England will protect all the native men of New Zealand. She yields to them all the rights, one and the same as her doings to the men of England

It is clear that the intent of the treaty was to establish a common law that would apply equally to all New Zealanders.

I get so sick and tired of this manipulative BS right-wing twisting of reality to justify a distorted interpretation of history and contemporary society. The simple truth is, always had been, and remains, that there has not been a level playing field for Maori in this country and bleating about 'equal treatment' is a particularly dishonest fake argument. As a group, Maori are behind the white majority by almost every measure. Treating them 'equally' just reinforces that. When they have the same employment opportunities, educational standards, health care, and standard of living as the rest of us, that is the time to start treating them equally. Brash is a racist because he tries to use the fake equality argument to keep Maori disadvantaged. It is the most pernicious kind of victim-blaming.

That said, the decision to ban him from speaking was idiotic, and the attempts to justify that after the fact, equally dishonest and hypocritical. The Massey VC is as full of crap as Brash. They both need to be put out to pasture. Clearly neither side of the political spectrum is above shameful and disgusting behaviour.

This is NZ where freedom of speech comes with terms and conditions.  And those terms and conditions are imposed by people such as the Vice-Chancellor with their left wing agendas.

It is not a left-wing agenda. It is hypocritical dishonesty by someone who should know better.

"They painted a narrative that did not aline with what I originally thought was untenable"

What a shame the reporter doesn't know how to spell 'align'. Have they never heard of that word before?

Reporter was probably busy editing the next lot of Neighbourly stories about missing cat bells and garden hoses.

Well counter to that is a theory,  that after more than a century of "equality" under the law, every single measure of social and economic equality shows that's nothing equal about distribution of wealth and opportunity (as measured by outcome) on racial divides at all.  Any improvements have been recent - and the result of policies that he rejects.

To have an elderly white economist suggest otherwise is asking for trouble.  His hypocrisy ( as he should understand the socio economic basics) doesn't endear him to me.

He should really STFU.  He's outside his field of expertise - and should best be ignored - rejected as the insignificant troll and the unpopular failed politician that he is.

Oh BS.  If there's a problem there, then as the council chair hasn't commented (unless in records) prior to this blowing up, then the first person to fall on their sword should be that person - who with the council appointed the VC.

This BS from Brash isn't reasonable.  He's demanding that a VC should be sacked because in his opinion they had a political agenda - yet he's making a big fuss about having his narrow political agenda "unwelcomed" on campus.  They should have the academic freedom to make a decision to tell him to GTFO.  If there's a problem, then there's a staff and student members on council to argue his point.

Good lord - next thing anti-vaxers, flat-earthers, and cat-fanciers will be demanding access to debate their case on university campuses.  Then we'll have Breitbart and 4Chan saying the same.

Brash was not demanding access. He was invited by the Politics Club a student club. Academic freedom exists for a reason. One minute you ban an offensive wrong and silly individual like Brash. Next minute a goverment or someone with a vested interest wants to ban someone from presenting at an engineering club about potential for engineering design failure like earthquake collapse or dam failure.

One member (out of 14) is.

That should be left to run its course - not politicised - as if the result is that Brash's politicisation of the issue forces action from outside, then that's by far the worst possible result in terms of independence of academic institutions.

Students have representation on council, If there's an issue there, then council is the place to address it.  It should be minuted.  Instead we've got politicians (left and right) weighing in to something they should steer clear of.  If the politics club couldn't convince council members through their delegate to do anything, or the council (unwisely as this case may be) decided that this was operational not governance, then the lot should probably be sacked - as they're appearing to be dysfunctional.

Oh - okay.  So there's no story.  Please go back to sleep.

If you weren't expecting something as a "right" then why on earth would you care if you didn't get what you wanted?
