I just became aware that Cameron Slater ('Whaleoil') has been incapacitated by a couple of strokes. I don't like his politics and on the basis of his public statements, I probably wouldn't like him much if I ever met him. Several years ago I was a member for a short time. I was attracted by Slater's campaign against name suppression, which I agreed with. I also found some of his comments entertaining. I suppose he was a bit like a Donald Trump figure, except much more intelligent. I quickly became disenchanted, however. Some of the positions he took repelled me and over time he seemed to become more extreme. This was before he became involved in National's dirty tricks. I drifted away and eventually discovered Geekzone, which was much more to my liking.

I don't agree with a lot (probably most) of Slater's ideas, and I don't like his politics. I especially don't like the way he has attacked and disparaged people he doesn't approve of. But I am sorry he has been felled in this way. I don't think he or anyone deserves that and I can't take pleasure from his misfortune, regardless of how I otherwise feel about him. I am sorry this has happened to him and I wish him the fullest possible recovery. So best wishes from this 'lefty'.

Apparently (and I'm not going to the Whaleoil site to check), there's an accusation by a staffer that "The Media" made his health problems worse, and that "A Journalist" caused the second stroke by allegedly attempting to obtain some of Slater's medical records which had been provided to a court under strict confidence.  Of course there's no evidence for this provided, and the journalist and media outlet is unnamed.

Stroke or not, opportunistically attempting to shift blame and condemn the "lying press" is true to form, and an ugliness very reminiscent of Trump (and other hard right wingers) bullying and hypocritical intolerance when the worm turns.  Note that this hasn't come from Slater, but his supporter(s).

I am not a supporter and I haven't visited the site for years, except yesterday to confirm the news about Slater. I don't agree with their ideas and I don't like their methods. I was just expressing sympathy for a public figure who has suffered a serious health problem. I think that sucks, regardless of his politics. I hope he gets better.

Well, I did go to the site and this is what they're offering up as proof.

IOW no proof at all that the actions of a journalist caused Slater to have a stroke, but a headline ("Bring Back the Biff") phrase that seems to be endorsing physical violence.

I agree. And as you can imagine, I dislike Cam Slater and his pack of hard-right animal-like supporters. All that said, the kind of fake virtue signaling and convenient double speak that Fisher seems to have engaged in (based on the allegations made in that blog post and an apparent screenshot of the text message from Fisher) is nothing but fuel for Slater's rabid "fans". The hard right media is hypocritical and lacking in self-awareness but a lot of their ammunition is the sloppiness and penchant for selective "facts" on the part of the traditional media (I refuse to be co-opted into using a hard right term to describe those guys).

If Fisher doesn't sue for defamation given the allegations against him, then you pretty much know that what has been alleged is true. Nope, it doesn't make Whaleoil credible or palatable reading for non-amoeba but it sure is unnecessary powder for that mob.

Looks like Whaleoil has closed:

http://whaleoil.co.nz/

https://thespinoff.co.nz/media/01-08-2019/rip-whaleoil-net-nz-2005-2019/

Although, given the large number of people he rubbed up the wrong way, can't say I'm completely surprised. I heard that site has been dropping in popularity for ages now. Personally I reckon beginning of the end was the Dirty Politics book, but his stroke was the final nail in the coffin for the site.

Oh dear - how could it be that preachy "social conservatives" might choose to just help themselves to things they don't own?

I find it hard to muster an ounce of charity for Slater.

I'm all for a free and fair debate of ideas but Slater was more interested in stacking the odds in favour of daddy's team.

i visited whaleoil once and regretted it immediately. It contained hateful spewings of keyboard warriors.

When the revelations of dirty politics showed his actions corrupting public discourse it confirmed to me what an odious character he is.

The fact that one of his targets had the determination and wherewithall to respond, not by throwing a rock through his window but taking him to the legal cleaners cheers me greatly.

The internet is a tiny bit better off now.

The http://www.whaleoil.co.nz site now redirects to https://www.blomfield.co.nz/

And so we arrive back at this masterstroke – this takeover of the whaleoil blogsite. What’s in it for Matt? Why would he bother? The toxic stuff once written up here about him is long gone, thanks to Matt’s efforts through the courts. The whaleoil site itself is worth nothing now, but it’s also worth everything.

All those other people, the ones who like Matt were slandered, bullied and humiliated on that blog over all those years — the horrible stories about them are still out there, recurrent reminders of vicious attacks. People like the woman I interviewed who was still too shaky to tell me what had happened but who simply googled herself and silently showed me the result on her phone; people like Scott Poynting, who knows that anyone googling him runs immediately into the whaleoil accusations against him. There are many, many such people.

...

This site — whaleoil.co.nz — now serves as a perpetual memorial to the injustices inflicted on all those people, and to Matt’s long battle to curtail falsity, bullying and manipulation.

That is a very fine ending.

I wish I could change the title of this thread. I briefly followed the Whaleoil blog several years ago, before the dirty politics stuff started. I never communicated directly with Slater, but I supported his attempts to undermine name suppression, which definitely was being abused at the time to protect those with the right connections. After that I got tired of the spewing and left. I do not in any way support or admire him, though I agreed with his fight against class justice. When I heard he had suffered a stroke, I sent him best wishes because I thought that was a charitable thing to do. Strokes are evil things. No-one should have to suffer one. But I am not a fan and I think he probably deserved what he got. Not the stroke, but the other stuff.

The internet never forgets :-)

Now you point it out I tend to agree with the abuse of name suppression for the wealthy and celebretied. Its a scary realisation that I have something in common with Slater but OTOH even a broken clock tells the right time twice a day.

To be fair I think the name suppression thing was all about bringing attention to his blog and an issue a broad group could be made to look into. His blog was always to promote his brand of toxic rightwing politics.

I have more sympathy for Kim Dotcom than Slater (not that Kim had a stroke).  The worse thing Kim was ever accused of was running a download site which isn't logically any different from the current version mega.co.nz (which he sold) which still operates and is hosted in NZ.  It's a real pity that the Internet Party collapsed in a heap of dust.

I think Slater's stroke is more linked to his weight problem than anything a journalist has done.

Sorry, but strokes are caused by high blood pressure/clots or excessive bleeding.

None of which are caused by being pissed off or upset.

Mr Slater filed for bankruptcy

He is on my list of bankrupts to contact as part of my research into the insolvency regimes.

As a bankrupt myself I can confirm that being bankrupt in NZ and even the months leading up to it, is a terribly traumatic experience.

Bankruptcy does not relieve that trauma but instead lumps new stresses and new debt onto a person.

Is it any wonder that Mr Slater suffered a stroke. The trauma he endured including what he now faces for the rest of his life, was too much for his brain and body to handle.

Ford
