No words.

I won't link to the actual video of the shooting, which has been widely distributed online. But it's disturbing beyond belief. In any normal jurisdiction, the two thugs involved in the shooting would have been charged with (and almost certainly convicted of) murder. But it's the US that we are talking about here. I guess lynching is alive and well in some places still. There's an allegation that one of the shooters actually told the 911 operator the following:

he 911 calls show the call taker was asking the men what Arbery is doing that was of criminal concern, Merritt said.
"They didn't give any answer for that, they said, 'He's a black man running down our road,'" Merritt said.

EDIT: If you don't want to see the video of the shooting, don't let the video in the link auto-play. It's stomach churning stuff.

There is a lot of institutional racism in America as well as social. It is appalling that they call themselves the Land of the Free.

dejadeadnz:

The father is a retired investigator who worked for the local DA - she has recused herself from the prosecution.

If the guy is deeply racist (as his alleged behaviour suggests) ... how many convictions of black suspects has he been involved in.

Minneapolis releases 911 transcript of George Floyd related call:

CNN: Operator: 911 what's the address of the emergency?

Caller: This is ah 3759 Chicago Ave.

Operator: How can I help you?

Caller: Um someone comes our store and give us fake bills and we realize it before he left the store, and we ran back outside, they was sitting on their car. We tell them to give us their phone, put their (inaudible) thing back and everything and he was also drunk and everything and return to give us our cigarettes back and so he can, so he can go home but he doesn't want to do that, and he's sitting on his car cause he is awfully drunk and he's not in control of himself.

Operator: Okay, what type of vehicle does he have?

Caller: And .... um he's got a vehicle that is ah ... one second let me see if I can see the license. The driver license is BRJ026.

Operator: Okay, what color is it?

Caller: It's a blue color. It's a blue van.

Operator: Blue van?

Caller: Yes, van.

Operator: Alright blue van, gotcha. Is it out front or is it on 38th St.?

Caller: Ah it's on 38th St.

Operator: On 38th St. So, this guy gave a counterfeit bill, has your cigarettes, and he's under the influence of something?

Caller: Something like that, yes. He is not acting right.

Operator: What's he look like, what race?

Caller: Um, he's a tall guy. He's like tall and bald, about like 6 ... 6 1/2, and she's not acting right so and she started to go, drive the car.

Operator: Okay so, female or a male?

Caller: Um...

Operator: Is it a girl or a boy?

Caller: (Talking to somebody else) — he's asking (inaudible) one second. Hello?

Operator: Is it a girl or a boy that did this?

Caller: It is a man.

Operator: Okay. Is he white, black, Native, Hispanic, Asian?

Caller: Something like that.

Operator: Which one? White, black, Native, Hispanic, Asian?

Caller: No, he's a black guy.

Operator: Alright (sigh).

Caller: How is your day going?

Operator: Not too bad.

Caller: Had a long day, huh?

Operator: What's your name?

Caller: My name is (deleted)

Operator: Alright, a phone number for you?

Caller: (Deleted)

Operator: Alright, I've got help on the way. If that vehicle or that person leaves before we get there, just give us a call back, otherwise we'll have squads out there shortly, okay?

Caller: No problem.

Operator: Thank you.

It reads almost as if the shop assistant was unwilling to provide an identifier based on race to police dispatch.

Regarding Ahmaud Arbery, there's a good article from NPR about life in a deep-South town.

https://www.npr.org/2020/05/26/861992342/arbery-shooting-sparks-racism-corruption-questions-about-georgia-county

While the white father and son duo responsible shouldn't have ran down and confronted Ahmaud, video has emerged of someone minutes before with the same general description and wearing the same clothes prowling inside a construction site. The father and son couldn't have known this, of course, so there's no reason not to let the police handle.

The father is a former police officer. It's widely known former police in the deep south often act with impunity. Their buddies will, at the the least, give them the benefit of the doubt, and often will back them up even on clearly illegal activities.

My advice is if you're in a deep South small city, and you're confronted by anyone white identifying themselves as a former police officer, it equivalent to them saying "you know I could kill you, and no one would care." Former sheriffs in the deep south are even more life threatening.

Ahmaud obliviously shouldn't have been confronted. If the father and son hadn't killed Ahmaud, there would never be any repercussion for them. Quite the contrary, his police buddies would have patted them on the shoulders, and praised them.

However grabbing any shotgun, holding it with the barrel pointed at myself and punching in the head the person holding the gun isn't recommended.

Re George Floyd and Minneapolis, Minnesota, third degree murder is clearly too weak. Kneeling on a nonviolent offender's neck for almost nine minutes, even as the person passes out and pisses himself, means its premeditated murder.

The police officer deserves a first degree murder conviction.

It sound like the shop assistant is asking someone "off screen". To me it's clear she's relaying the call from someone else, second hand.

Driving through central Auckland just now there were young people carrying signs converging on Aotea Square from all directions. Based on driving by and knowing Aotea Square, I'd say several thousand people present, and more arriving.

another one https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jun/06/manuel-ellis-police-killing-witness

from my understanding this has been denied until someone came up with video evidence and police changed their story

sounds like it's a daily occurrence that gets locked in the filing cabinet unless video evidence emerges

"Furor in Texas GOP after leaders post racist memes that suggest Floyd’s death is a hoax":

One Facebook post falsely claimed that the killing of George Floyd in police custody last month was a “staged event,” meant to rile up opposition to President Trump. Another showed a quote from Martin Luther King Jr. next to a banana — an established racist trope.

And a third claimed that George Soros, the liberal billionaire, paid “white cops to murder black people” and “black people to riot because race wars keep the sheep in line.”

All of these posts were shared in recent days by Republican county leaders in Texas, some of whom are now facing calls to resign from top officials within their own party, including Sens. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn and Gov. Greg Abbott, who called the posts “disgusting,” the Texas Tribune reported.

White woman attempts to block black man from entering his apartment building

D'Arreion Nuriyah Toles was blocked from entering his St. Louis, Missouri, apartment by a white woman, who repeatedly questioned if he lived there.

Toles captured the encounter on video.

Since the video’s release, the woman has been fired from her job.

Toles has said he does not wish to press charges against her.

Something I don't get about USA bail conditions:

RNZ: Judge Jeannice M Reding set a bail of $1.25m with no preconditions, or $1m with conditions that include Chauvin not contacting Floyd's family, surrendering his firearms and not working in law enforcement or security as he awaits trial.

If he comes up with another 250k Chauvin can to carry a gun and work security? This seems like an unusual outcome.

NZ schools removing Black Lives Matter posters

Absolutely ****** disgraceful. Sack the school principals concerned along with all the racists-abiding staff co-opting the BLM slogans and bleating on about scholarships for Maori.
