Bit of a tricky subject. NZ is very diverse, there will be many Chinese here (I am married to one) so a tad delicate.

Please try to sit on the fence if commenting

A US representative going there could be seen as poking the bull, but other global areas have been there recently, UK soon. Not the first time the US has been there

But its tricky

I think this thread belongs in politics, precisely because it is so sensitive to some. I applaud Pelosi's decision. One should never give in to a bully. China needs to grow up and get over itself.

Perhaps it does belong there, but that tends to make it problematical. Im more exposed than some, but I like to view this from the fence. Its not about is the US wrong or right, or China is wrong or right, its somewhere in between. The parallels with Ukraine is clear, although IMO its not a parallel at all.

But maybe you are right

It was moved to politics before you even got the chance to agree to that ;)

Any discussion of China-US-Taiwan relations is by definition political, and I hate to say it but you can't stay on the fence with it. It's polarising to its core.

Fair enough. Yes it is polarising, but if anyone is pro US or pro mainland China, its basically a non discussion.

I am pro free thought, which seems to pretty much rule out mainland China at this time.

The legitimate government of China currently sits in Taipei, Beijing is just the pretenders.

Pelosi is just playing politics. She's putting on a show for the US mid-terms in a vain attempt to keep her position as House speaker but it won't work. The Dems are toast.

She's a dinosaur in a digital world and she exemplifies everything that is wrong with the Democrats. She should have been gone long ago.

Correct. The Chinese Govt was taken on in a civil war and they lost to the CCP, and remained in Taiwan. Taiwan hasnt been governed by the CCP in the past, so it isnt now.

Unfortunately the free world did not explain One China.

Once China is a liberal democracy.
Taiwan will probably have little issue joining China as a state with certain state rights.
Though it is up to Taiwan people , not an autocrat.

Open and liberal democracy being the only assurance that such agreements will be kept.
Otherwise autocrats do whatever they want.
Hong Kong was assured certain things and that did not work out.

People who are bought up under an open democracy would suffer greatly under the CCP.
The death and destruction from an invasion would be dwarfed by the mass cleansing of politically unreliable population.
Why would we ever accept the crushing of a vibrant democracy and continue to economically support CCP ?

One China, and all those that signed to it, cos they had to, isnt really One China. Its a recognition that China feels it owns Taiwan. Its not a recognition that signatories feel the same way.

How much has China squandered on this ridiculous over-reaction to Pelosi's visit? Missiles, fighter jets, ships, all kinds of spoilt brat displays of frustrated thin-skinned impotence. They must have really tiny dicks to behave like that!

Saving face. Unsure how making big splashes in the ocean saves face, but the news there will paint a different picture. Its very PRNK like. End of the day, if China wants to be the No.1 powerhouse militarily and economically, it needs the West. The West needs China also, but Im sure the West could up its manufacturing actability over time if need be. That would be costly as no cheap goods, but more economic activity globally. IMO China needs to tread carefully. I imagine nothing will change, just periodic rhetoric while they happily ship goods to the West

For a culture that cares so much about saving face, they sure have chucked a lot of it away. There is nothing face-saving in all the over the top threats and rhetoric, and the ridiculous display of military firecrackers. They are making themselves look silly.

Agree, but the citizens will be given a masterful display of courage and security in the media

The concern to me is that the US has basically stated that they would not get involved directly if Mainland China sought to take over Taiwan. The cost and time in Ukraine means that there will be less capability and desire to throw more weapons and cash in a battle that China would win by default. Perhaps the West needs to learn from Ukraine and ensure that they are not beholden to China's manufacturing. We want it, we enjoy it, but we could manage if we cut it off

Isn't the US required by its own legislation to defend Taiwan if the Chinese invade?
