On an only slightly related note, I am really regretting using my real e-mail address way back when I registered with Adobe. The amount of spam I get has noticeably increased lately :(

I recieved this one too.

I was wondering how they got my email. I had recently just given my details to the AA and a finance company that afternoon and thought maybe I had visited an illigitimate link or something. A mistake I seem to make often on my smartphone. It's harder to tell if you are being maliciously re-directed.

Other than compromised data-bases of legit sites, much comes from ransacked address lists/books that people unwittingly link to their social network sites.

When cleaning out other people's machines I've also come across myriad cookies and tracking implants in Registries from dozens of marketing/tracking sites. In two instances I'd found actual hijack programs quietly running away!

I did recently get a warning from a tracking company that my email addresses had appeared on a couple of lists that are being sold to spammers. Not much I can do about it really other than use addresses specific to each service, means I have a lot of address redirects setup.

A European friend of mine has told me that Gulog Gratis is a genuine Danish auction/trading site, similar to our TradeMe -

"One of the largest marketplaces online is guloggratis.dk , which allows for purchase, exchange or sale of a wide variety of products. There is everything from electronics, fashion, beauty, sports, building materials and a lot of other different categories".

The email, though, is probably a scam using their name.

andrewbnz: What I find interesting is that this spam came to an email address which is unique to a certain NZ website. I have only ever used this email address at this website to register an account.

So to me that suggests either the website has been compromised or they sold their database? Unlikely it was a lucky random attack given the email address format is websitename@mydomain

I quick update... I emailed the support desk of the website and got the below response...

Hi Andrew,

We obviously take this matter very seriously, however I can assure you that we have not been hacked nor have we sold our database.
These spammers are keyword spamming "websitename". I would suggest marking them as spam via your email provider.

I still think this is very unlikely given the email address it was sent to a doubt I was victim of a "random" attack.

I have now had another user on here PM me stating they also received this spam to a email address they only use with 3 websites. One of those happens to be the same website I have been in contact with.

sella.co.nz

They have assured me that this is likely to be a dictionary attack and that their database has not been compromised.

The email address I received the spam to was sella@(mydomain)

A couple of questions for those that have received this message...

was the email address you received this to sella@...
have you / are you registered on sella.co.nz if so did you receive the spam to the email address you registered with
