I have tried twice now at my local Countdown with my BNZ Visa Debit. Neither times have worked and the supervisor there actually had knowledge and told me that they only accept Visa, not Visa Debit, which at the time I thought was rubbish (as I was told by BNZ that it would work anywhere that accepted contactless payments). However, thanks to the ASB post, I now know that it actually is the case :( I work at The Warehouse after schools and we had contactless payments installed about a month ago and I have only had 3 people use it, and every time it has worked. Hopefully Countdown will later revise their decision to refuse Visa Debit and we can all be happy :D

Yeah apparently the Countdown ones are nearly instant. I left school at lunch today and went to work (The Warehouse) and tried paying for a drink with PayWave - it worked but it was pretty much the same speed as swiping or inserting, so not much benefit really, except for the fact that it looks cool ;D

The transaction times on their terminals are super fast, waaaay faster than swipe and pin or chip and pin.

Just in case you weren't aware: If your purchase is greater than $80 you can still 'wave' your card. It will prompt you for a PIN but it certainly improves the processing time verses inserting a chip card and entering a PIN.

It just happened to me!!

I went to the BP service station - the first time to try my ASB Visa Debit Paywave card.
I bought some gum and some lollies and did the wave thing 4 times.

Each time it said "Trans. Failed". But now I see I have a debit of over $22.00 !!!

How can I use the card if it keeps saying "failed"? How will I know?
And how do I get my money back?

My warehouse master card has been coming up present one card, even tho I am not at countdown, and then failing to read heaps for me when I try to use it. Inserting it works fine.

Gem visa is working sweet as everywhere I have tried it with the execption of bunnings on their added on reader, which the checkout operator said almost never works.

and here I was thinking with Countdown their Paywave terminals were exclusive to their new credit card as it wouldn't recognise my ANZ Visa Debit. It works fine at The Warehouse, BP, Warehouse, Repco and Telecom

ASBBank: Hi everyone, thanks for all the comments on this thread. Some of you have experienced problems with your Visa debit card while using payWave at some merchants and we’ve been looking into this.

Currently Countdown and Kmart do not accept payWave transactions with NZ issued Visa debit cards – instead you will be prompted to insert your card into the terminal and enter your PIN number to process the transaction. Credit cards are not affected - if you have an ASB Visa Gold or Platinum, or a MasterCard (Standard, Low Interest or Gold) you should be able to use the contactless technology as normal.

You will still be able to use your Visa debit cards at other merchants offering contactless payments such as BP, The Warehouse, Bunnings etc.

We’ll keep you posted with any further developments. Thanks. ^SM

Hi ASB Bank and the other people in this forum

I think you have to let your contact centre staff know about this issues. I just order a new card and didn't realise there is an issue with the paywave system on our ASB visa debit cards.....

For your information guys, I am a regular BP coffee person and everytime i tried to use my ASB Debit Card, it keeps on saying transaction failed.

When I goto Countdown last time, it asked me to swipe the card and enter my PIN number

Tried in Kmart, it looks fine. (that was 1 1/2 months ago)

Kind Regards
Jacky

I have tried to use my ASB VisaDebit paywave on 3 occasions and it has failed all three times and had to insert instead. Tired at Countdown (I see this has been explained), Z-Energy and just now BP. Clerk at BPs comment was "none of the ASB cards seem to work".

I've had my ASB Platinum VISA replaced twice and still very inconsistent. Worked last 2 times at BP then yesterday no go. Guy behind the counter told me the same thing, ASB cards are the bulk of the sufferers.

ASB needs to take ownership of this as while it may not be their fault, it is obviously their customers sufffering the most.

I give up.
